AbstractTwo existing techniques for over a century to recover copper residues, the electroflocculation and gravimetric analysis by chemical precipitation were used in the treatment containing copper. The electroflocculation, which is an alternative among many unconventional techniques focuses on using continue electric current to provide the necessary condition for oxidation and reduction reactions to happen by using metal electrodes, thus promoting the formation of gelatinous metal hydroxides which concentrates the impurities to be recovered. By testing, it was defined 5V as the lowest potential to be used, simultaneously to the addition of Sodium hydroxide, in order to obtain satisfactory results of residue recovery. With the gravimetric method by chemical precipitation, it is set the concentration to be adopted for the treatment of 0,1 mol.L-1, avoiding waste and obtaining better copper recovery

Quantification of Visual Field Loss in Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Background An evaluation of standard automated perimetry (SAP) and short wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP) for the central 10–2 visual field test procedure in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is presented in order to determine methods of quantifying the central sensitivity loss in patients at various stages of AMD. Methods 10–2 SAP and SWAP Humphrey visual fields and stereoscopic fundus photographs were collected in 27 eyes of 27 patients with AMD and 22 eyes of 22 normal subjects. Results Mean Deviation and Pattern Standard Deviation (PSD) varied significantly with stage of disease in SAP (both p<0.001) and SWAP (both p<0.001), but post hoc analysis revealed overlap of functional values among stages. In SWAP, indices of focal loss were more sensitive to detecting differences in AMD from normal. SWAP defects were greater in depth and area than those in SAP. Central sensitivity (within 1°) changed by −3.9 and −4.9 dB per stage in SAP and SWAP, respectively. Based on defect maps, an AMD Severity Index was derived. Conclusions Global indices of focal loss were more sensitive to detecting early stage AMD from normal. The SWAP sensitivity decline with advancing stage of AMD was greater than in SAP. A new AMD Severity Index quantifies visual field defects on a continuous scale. Although not all patients are suitable for SWAP examinations, it is of value as a tool in research studies of visual loss in AMD

Adjunctive rifampicin for Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (ARREST): a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia is a common cause of severe community-acquired and hospital-acquired infection worldwide. We tested the hypothesis that adjunctive rifampicin would reduce bacteriologically confirmed treatment failure or disease recurrence, or death, by enhancing early S aureus killing, sterilising infected foci and blood faster, and reducing risks of dissemination and metastatic infection. METHODS: In this multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, adults (≥18 years) with S aureus bacteraemia who had received ≤96 h of active antibiotic therapy were recruited from 29 UK hospitals. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) via a computer-generated sequential randomisation list to receive 2 weeks of adjunctive rifampicin (600 mg or 900 mg per day according to weight, oral or intravenous) versus identical placebo, together with standard antibiotic therapy. Randomisation was stratified by centre. Patients, investigators, and those caring for the patients were masked to group allocation. The primary outcome was time to bacteriologically confirmed treatment failure or disease recurrence, or death (all-cause), from randomisation to 12 weeks, adjudicated by an independent review committee masked to the treatment. Analysis was intention to treat. This trial was registered, number ISRCTN37666216, and is closed to new participants. FINDINGS: Between Dec 10, 2012, and Oct 25, 2016, 758 eligible participants were randomly assigned: 370 to rifampicin and 388 to placebo. 485 (64%) participants had community-acquired S aureus infections, and 132 (17%) had nosocomial S aureus infections. 47 (6%) had meticillin-resistant infections. 301 (40%) participants had an initial deep infection focus. Standard antibiotics were given for 29 (IQR 18-45) days; 619 (82%) participants received flucloxacillin. By week 12, 62 (17%) of participants who received rifampicin versus 71 (18%) who received placebo experienced treatment failure or disease recurrence, or died (absolute risk difference -1·4%, 95% CI -7·0 to 4·3; hazard ratio 0·96, 0·68-1·35, p=0·81). From randomisation to 12 weeks, no evidence of differences in serious (p=0·17) or grade 3-4 (p=0·36) adverse events were observed; however, 63 (17%) participants in the rifampicin group versus 39 (10%) in the placebo group had antibiotic or trial drug-modifying adverse events (p=0·004), and 24 (6%) versus six (2%) had drug interactions (p=0·0005). INTERPRETATION: Adjunctive rifampicin provided no overall benefit over standard antibiotic therapy in adults with S aureus bacteraemia. The Filipinos are known for having strong ties with their loved ones however, every family and every relationships has its grave problems in secrecy. Domestic violence in families, or intimate partner violence in relationships, is a poison left by the state for the family to resolve on its own. This thesis aims to verify the idea that people who experience battering inside the domicile or while having a dating or sexual relationship deserve protection from the legislation, and that Section 26 of Republic Act. no. 9262, also known as the Anti-VAWC Act , should provide a broader definition of battered women syndrome to create a more favorable condition for all victims of domestic violence. This redefinition, which could be known as the battered person syndrome, shall resolve conflicting issues with constitutional mandates of equal protection, respect for human rights, and social justice
