Disorder Effect on the Vortex Pinning by the Cooling Process Control in the Organic Superconductor -(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]Br
We investigate the influence of disorders in terminal ethylene groups of
BEDT-TTF molecules (ethylene-disorders) on the vortex pinning of the organic
superconductor -(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]Br. Magnetization
measurements are performed under different cooling-processes. The second peak
in the magnetization hysteresis curve is observed for all samples studied, and
the hysteresis width of the magnetization becomes narrower by cooling faster.
In contradiction to the simple pinning effect of disorder, this result shows
the suppression of the vortex pinning force by introducing more
ethylene-disorders. The ethylene-disorder domain model is proposed for
explaining the observed result. In the case of the system containing a moderate
number of the ethylene-disorders, the disordered molecules form a domain
structure and it works as an effective pinning site. On the contrary, an excess
number of the ethylene-disorders may weaken the effect of the domain structure,
which results in the less effective pinning force on the vortices.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Impurity Effect on the In-plane Penetration Depth of the Organic Superconductors -(BEDT-TTF) ( = Cu(NCS) and Cu[N(CN)]Br)
We report the in-plane penetration depth of single
crystals -(BEDT-TTF) ( Cu(NCS) and Cu[N(CN)]Br) by
means of the reversible magnetization measurements under the control of
cooling-rate. In = Cu(NCS), as an
extrapolation toward = 0 K does not change by the cooling-rate within the
experimental accuracy, while is slightly reduced. On the other
hand, in = Cu[N(CN)]Br, indicates a distinct
increase by cooling faster. The different behavior of
on cooling-rate between the two salts is quantitatively explained in terms of
the local-clean approximation (London model), considering that the former salt
belongs to the very clean system and the later the moderate clean one. The good
agreement with this model demonstrates that disorders of ethylene-group in
BEDT-TTF introduced by cooling faster increase the
electron(quasiparticle)-scattering, resulting in shorter mean free path.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Surface characterization and surface electronic structure of organic quasi-one-dimensional charge transfer salts
We have thoroughly characterized the surfaces of the organic charge-transfer
salts TTF-TCNQ and (TMTSF)2PF6 which are generally acknowledged as prototypical
examples of one-dimensional conductors. In particular x-ray induced
photoemission spectroscopy turns out to be a valuable non-destructive
diagnostic tool. We show that the observation of generic one-dimensional
signatures in photoemission spectra of the valence band close to the Fermi
level can be strongly affected by surface effects. Especially, great care must
be exercised taking evidence for an unusual one-dimensional many-body state
exclusively from the observation of a pseudogap.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, v2: minor changes in text and figure labellin
Structural bases for the interaction of frataxin with the central components of iron–sulphur cluster assembly
Reduced levels of frataxin, an essential protein of as yet unknown function, are responsible for causing the neurodegenerative pathology Friedreich's ataxia. Independent reports have linked frataxin to iron–sulphur cluster assembly through interactions with the two central components of this machinery: desulphurase Nfs1/IscS and the scaffold protein Isu/IscU. In this study, we use a combination of biophysical methods to define the structural bases of the interaction of CyaY (the bacterial orthologue of frataxin) with the IscS/IscU complex. We show that CyaY binds IscS as a monomer in a pocket between the active site and the IscS dimer interface. Recognition does not require iron and occurs through electrostatic interactions of complementary charged residues. Mutations at the complex interface affect the rates of enzymatic cluster formation. CyaY binding strengthens the affinity of the IscS/IscU complex. Our data suggest a new paradigm for understanding the role of frataxin as a regulator of IscS functions
Spread of Epidemic MRSA-ST5-IV Clone Encoding PVL as a Major Cause of Community Onset Staphylococcal Infections in Argentinean Children
BACKGROUND: Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-(CA-MRSA) strains have emerged in Argentina. We investigated the clinical and molecular evolution of community-onset MRSA infections (CO-MRSA) in children of Córdoba, Argentina, 2005-2008. Additionally, data from 2007 were compared with the epidemiology of these infections in other regions of the country. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Two datasets were used: i) lab-based prospective surveillance of CA-MRSA isolates from 3 Córdoba pediatric hospitals-(CBAH1-H3) in 2007-2008 (compared to previously published data of 2005) and ii) a sampling of CO-MRSA from a study involving both, healthcare-associated community-onset-(HACO) infections in children with risk-factors for healthcare-associated infections-(HRFs), and CA-MRSA infections in patients without HRFs detected in multiple centers of Argentina in 2007. Molecular typing was performed on the CA-MRSA-(n: 99) isolates from the CBAH1-H3-dataset and on the HACO-MRSA-(n: 51) and CA-MRSA-(n: 213) isolates from other regions. Between 2005-2008, the annual proportion of CA-MRSA/CA-S. aureus in Córdoba hospitals increased from 25% to 49%, P<0.01. Total CA-MRSA infections increased 3.6 fold-(5.1 to 18.6 cases/100,000 annual-visits, P<0.0001), associated with an important increase of invasive CA-MRSA infections-(8.5 fold). In all regions analyzed, a single genotype prevailed in both CA-MRSA (82%) and HACO-MRSA(57%), which showed pulsed-field-gel electrophoresis-(PFGE)-type-"I", sequence-type-5-(ST5), SCCmec-type-IVa, spa-t311, and was positive for PVL. The second clone, pulsotype-N/ST30/CC30/SCCmecIVc/t019/PVL(+), accounted for 11.5% of total CA-MRSA infections. Importantly, the first 4 isolates of Argentina belonging to South American-USA300 clone-(USA300/ST8/CC8/SCCmecIVc/t008/PVL(+)/ACME(-)) were detected. We also demonstrated that a HA-MRSA clone-(pulsotype-C/ST100/CC5) caused 2% and 10% of CA-MRSA and HACO-MRSA infections respectively and was associated with a SCCmec type closely related to SCCmecIV(2B&5). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The dissemination of epidemic MRSA clone, ST5-IV-PVL(+) was the main cause of increasing staphylococcal community-onset infections in Argentinean children (2003-2008), conversely to other countries. The predominance of this clone, which has capacity to express the h-VISA phenotype, in healthcare-associated community-onset cases suggests that it has infiltrated into hospital-settings
Structural Basis for Fe–S Cluster Assembly and tRNA Thiolation Mediated by IscS Protein–Protein Interactions
Crystal structures reveal how distinct sites on the cysteine desulfurase IscS bind two different sulfur-acceptor proteins, IscU and TusA, to transfer sulfur atoms for iron-sulfur cluster biosynthesis and tRNA thiolation
A Novel Protein Kinase-Like Domain in a Selenoprotein, Widespread in the Tree of Life
Selenoproteins serve important functions in many organisms, usually providing essential oxidoreductase enzymatic activity, often for defense against toxic xenobiotic substances. Most eukaryotic genomes possess a small number of these proteins, usually not more than 20. Selenoproteins belong to various structural classes, often related to oxidoreductase function, yet a few of them are completely uncharacterised
