In this paper, the pyhsical model tests which were carried out in the laboratory on uniform sand columns, silt inter layered sand columns and two layered sand columns deposited at various relative densities and subjected to different input accelerations are numerically modelled. The numerical analyses are performed by using Towhata-Iai liquefaction model in a finite element program called DIANA and the excess pore water pressures computed from the numerical analyses are compared with the experimental results. The numerical analyses have shown that the development of excess pore water pressures is highly influenced by the relative density of the sand and the presence of a less permable soil layer within the sand deposit. The numerical modeling of silt interlayered sand tests showed that there is an abrupt increase in the ru values below the silt seam demonstrating the accumulation of pore water pressures due to the presence of silt layer. The results of the numerical analyses also revealed that a constitutive model coupled with a ground water flow analysis must be used to simulate the generation of excess pore water pressures especially in layered sand deposits

As a result of physical, social and economic needs, demand for tall buildings is increasing worldwide. Due to their great size and large impacts on urban environment, tall buildings,, have the potential to improve the quality around them through careful design and urban integration. When compared with lower buildings, tall buildings can be more challenging by means of architectural design and engineering details. Also, depending on their large area of influence, design considerations regarding sustainability and environmental integration of tall buildings need to be handled with more care than other conventional buildings in order to provide the most positive impact

Stem Cells and Innate Immunity in Aquatic Invertebrates: Bridging Two Seemingly Disparate Disciplines for New Discoveries in Biology

    Get PDF
The scopes related to the interplay between stem cells and the immune system are broad and range from the basic understanding of organism's physiology and ecology to translational studies, further contributing to (eco)toxicology, biotechnology, and medicine as well as regulatory and ethical aspects. Stem cells originate immune cells through hematopoiesis, and the interplay between the two cell types is required in processes like regeneration. In addition, stem and immune cell anomalies directly affect the organism's functions, its ability to cope with environmental changes and, indirectly, its role in ecosystem services. However, stem cells and immune cells continue to be considered parts of two branches of biological research with few interconnections between them. This review aims to bridge these two seemingly disparate disciplines towards much more integrative and transformative approaches with examples deriving mainly from aquatic invertebrates. We discuss the current understanding of cross-disciplinary collaborative and emerging issues, raising novel hypotheses and comments. We also discuss the problems and perspectives of the two disciplines and how to integrate their conceptual frameworks to address basic equations in biology in a new, innovative way

Also, depending on their large area of influence, design considerations regarding sustainability and environmental integration of tall buildings need to be handled with more care than with other conventional buildings to provide the most positive impact. This study focuses on the physical and social environmental impacts of tall buildings where these impacts are examined through determined „key sustainability concepts‟. The identified relevant „key sustainability concepts‟ reveal the positive or negative, physical and social environmental impacts of tall buildings. These key sustainability concepts provided to be an observational tool to conduct a study on existing or new tall buildings, from the architectural scale to the urban scale. As a demonstration of its effectiveness on the urban environment, the defined key sustainability concepts of two tall buildings located in London, „The Shard‟ and ‟30 St Mary Axe (Gherkin)‟, were selected and compared through site analysis and survey methods. With this study, the possible negative and positive effects of tall buildings both on architectural and urban scale have been revealed through a physical and social sustainable approach.M.S. - Master of Scienc

In this study, an Analytic Network Process (ANP) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) based approach was developed in order to measure the performance of customer-based Research and Development projects being executed in TÜB TAKSAGE, Defense Research and Development Institute, under the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. In order to evaluate project performance, many criteria, containing various subcriteria were determined. In order to handle the interdependencies among the criteria and the sub-criteria, ANP was used. The ANP model generated in this study is a hybrid model consisting of both a hierarchy and a network. The pairwise comparison matrices that were built up for defining the importance and influences of the criteria/sub-criteria in the ANP model were formed as interval judgments from a group decision making process, based on data obtained from a questionnaire conducted among the experts in the Institute. From the interval pairwise comparison matrices, weight intervals for the sub-criteria were determined and these bounds were used as assurance region constraints in a super-efficiency DEA model, through which the project ranking was obtained. Taking into consideration that there may occur some missing values in some projects for some of the sub-criteria, the superefficiency DEA model was extended to handle missing data. The model was applied to a real case study on performance evaluation of the ongoing customer-based projects in the Institute. For comparison purposes, the case study was also solved by two other approaches.M.S. - Master of Scienc
