Kinds of well-being: A conceptual framework that provides direction for caring
This article offers a conceptual framework by which different kinds and levels of well-being can be named, and as such, provides a foundation for a resource-oriented approach in situations of illness and vulnerability (rather than a deficit-oriented approach). Building on a previous paper that articulated the philosophical foundations of an existential theory of well-being (âDwelling-mobilityâ), we show here how the theory can be further developed towards practice-relevant concerns. We introduce 18 kinds of well-being that are intertwined and inter-related, and consider how each emphasis can lead to the formulation of resources that have the potential to give rise to well-being as a felt experience. By focusing on a much wider range of well-being possibilities, practitioners may find new directions for care that are not just literal but also at an existential level
Fear of the unknown: a pre-departure qualitative study of Turkish international students
This paper presents findings from eleven in-depth interviews with Turkish undergraduate students, who were, by the time of data collection, about to spend a semester at a European university under the Erasmus exchange scheme. The students all agreed to be interviewed about their feelings about studying in a foreign culture, and were found to be anxious prior to departure about the quality of accommodation in the new destination, their language ability and the opportunity to form friendships. Fears were expressed about possible misconceptions over Turkey as a Muslim and a developing country. Suggestions are made for HEI interventions to allay student travellersâ concerns
âDwelling-mobilityâ: An existential theory of well-being
In this article we offer an existential theory of well-being that is guided by Heidegger's later writings on âhomecomingâ. We approach the question of what it is about the essence of well-being that makes all kinds of well-being possible. Consistent with a phenomenological approach, well-being is both a way of being-in-the-world, as well as a felt sense of what this is like as an experience. Drawing on Heidegger's notion of Gegnet (abiding expanse), we characterise the deepest possibility of existential well-being as âdwelling-mobilityâ. This term indicates both the âadventureâ of being called into expansive existential possibilities, as well as âbeing-at-home-withâ what has been given. This deepest possibility of well-being carries with it a feeling of rootedness and flow, peace and possibility. However, we also consider how the separate notions of existential mobility and existential dwelling as discrete emphases can be developed to describe multiple variations of well-being possibilities
Mechanically Induced Amorphization of Diaqua-bis(Omeprazolate)-Magnesium Dihydrate
The influence of milling diaqua-bis(omeprazolate)-magnesium dihydrate (DABOMD), an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), was investigated. DABOMD was processed in a planetary ball mill at different milling times, from 1 to 300 min. The milling process resulted in a prominent comminution (size reduction) and amorphization of the API. DABOMD amorphization was identified with various characterization techniques including thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction, and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The solidâsolid crystalline to amorphous phase transformation is driven by compression, shear stresses, and heat generated in the planetary ball mill. This leads to distortion and breakage of hydrogen bonds, release of water molecules from the crystalline lattice of DABOMD and the accumulation of defects, and eventually a collapse of the crystalline order. Model fitting of the kinetics of comminution and the amorphization of DABOMD revealed a series of events: a rapid comminution at the start of milling driven by crystal cleavage of DABOMD, followed by partial amorphization, which is driven by rapid water diffusion, and subsequently, a slow steady comminution and amorphization
Lifeworld-led care: Is it relevant for well-being and the fifth wave of public health action?
A recent paper has made the case for a âfifth waveâ of public health action. The paper articulated the first four waves as focusing on civil engineering, the germ theory of disease, welfare reforms and lifestyle issues. This article will focus on well-being and will expand on the authorsâ articulation of a current need to âdiscover a new image of what it is to be humanâ to begin to address the challenges of promoting well-being. This article will consider an alternative way of viewing human beings within a âcaringâ context and how this alternative view may aid this potential fifth wave of public health action. This alternative view has emerged from the work of Husserl who suggested that any human view of the world without subjectivity has excluded its basic foundation. The phenomenological understanding of âlifeworldâ is articulated through five elements, temporality, spaciality, intersubjectivity, embodiment and mood that are all discussed here in detail. A world of colours, sparkling stars, memories, happiness, joy, anger and sadness. It is this âlifeworldâ that when health care or as argued in this article as public health becomes overly focused on decontextualized goals, and measuring quality superficially can be neglected
Pregnant and seeking asylum; exploring experiences âfrom booking to babyâ
YesPregnant women seeking asylum in the UK may be particularly vulnerable with poor underlying health, more complex pregnancies and an increased risk of maternal and perinatal mortality. Studies have shown that some women seeking asylum have poor experiences of maternity care. This is despite the implementation of NICE guidelines to improve care for women with complex social factors.
This article reports on a phenomenological study undertaken in West Yorkshire, aiming to explore the maternity care experiences of local pregnant asylum seeking women, to inform service development. Six women were interviewed over a three-month period. The findings focused more broadly on their experiences of living in the UK whilst being an asylum seeker and pregnant rather than focusing on maternity care, although this was included. Five key themes emerged: âpre-booking challengesâ, âinappropriate accommodationâ, âbeing pregnant and dispersedâ, âbeing alone and pregnantâ and ânot being asked or listened toâ. These findings could be used as the basis for training midwives to understand how the difficulties women experience can impact on their health and social needs
Sporting embodiment: sports studies and the (continuing) promise of phenomenology
Whilst in recent years sports studies have addressed the calls âto bring the body back inâ to theorisations of sport and physical activity, the âpromise of phenomenologyâ remains largely under-realised with regard to sporting embodiment. Relatively few accounts are grounded in the âfleshâ of the lived sporting body, and phenomenology offers a powerful framework for such analysis. A wide-ranging, multi-stranded, and interpretatively contested perspective, phenomenology in general has been taken up and utilised in very different ways within different disciplinary fields. The purpose of this article is to consider some selected phenomenological threads, key qualities of the phenomenological method, and the potential for existentialist phenomenology in particular to contribute fresh perspectives to the sociological study of embodiment in sport and exercise. It offers one way to convey the âessencesâ, corporeal immediacy and textured sensuosity of the lived sporting body. The use of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) is also critically addressed.

The composite first person narrative: Texture, structure, and meaning in writing phenomenological descriptions
This paper illustrates the use of composite first person narrative interpretive methods, as described by Todres, across a range of phenomena. This methodology introduces texture into the presently understood structures of phenomena and thereby creates new understandings of the phenomenon, bringing about a form of understanding that is relationally alive that contributes to improved caring practices. The method is influenced by the work of Gendlin, Heidegger, van Manen, Gadamer, and Merleau-Ponty. The method's applicability to different research topics is demonstrated through the composite narratives of nursing students learning nursing practice in an accelerated and condensed program, obese female adolescents attempting weight control, chronically ill male parolees, and midlife women experiencing distress during menopause. Within current research, these four phenomena have been predominantly described and understood through quantified articulations that give the reader a structural understanding of the phenomena, but the more embodied or âcontextualâ human qualities of the phenomena are often not visible. The âwhat is it likeâ or the âunsaidâ aspects of such human phenomena are not clear to the reader when proxies are used to âaccount forâ a variety of situated conditions. This novel method is employed to re-present narrative data and findings from research through first person accounts that blend the voices of the participants with those of the researcher, emphasizing the connectedness, the âweâ among all participants, researchers, and listeners. These re-presentations allow readers to develop more embodied understandings of both the texture and structure of each of the phenomena and illustrate the use of the composite account as a way for researchers to better understand and convey the wholeness of the experience of any phenomenon under inquiry
