    Social Networks In The Classroom: Personality Factors As Antecedents Of Student Social Capital

    This study examines personality factors as antecedents of student social capital. We hypothesize relationships between two constructs taken from the five-factor model of personality (agreeableness and extraversion) and two variables that reflect a student’s social capital (quantity of ties and strength of ties) in an academic setting. Analysis of roster-based, sociometric data suggests that agreeableness is associated with higher quantity of ties, but not higher tie strength. In contrast, extraversion is linked to higher tie strength, but not higher overall network size. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of student social capital for educational research and practice

    A Customized ERP/SAP Model for Business Curriculum Integration

    The use of ERP systems can provide a variety of benefits in a business school curriculum. Among the most important benefits is the ability of ERP systems to serve as a focal point for integration of knowledge across functional areas. This paper describes one school\u27s experience with the use of ERP systems in core business classes with particular focus on a promising integration technique based upon the development of a hypothetical example company. A common general description of the company\u27s products, organizational structure, and operations is used across multiple core courses. An SAP instance is populated with sample data designed to illustrate key concepts and case study style materials are used to set the context for analysis of the company\u27s data

    Mid-Infrared Optical Frequency Combs based on Difference Frequency Generation for Molecular Spectroscopy

    Mid-infrared femtosecond optical frequency combs were produced by difference frequency generation of the spectral components of a near-infrared comb in a 3-mm-long MgO:PPLN crystal. We observe strong pump depletion and 9.3 dB parametric gain in the 1.5 \mu m signal, which yields powers above 500 mW (3 \mu W/mode) in the idler with spectra covering 2.8 \mu m to 3.5 \mu m. Potential for broadband, high-resolution molecular spectroscopy is demonstrated by absorption spectra and interferograms obtained by heterodyning two combs.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Simulation of alnico coercivity

    Micromagnetic simulations of alnico show substantial deviations from Stoner-Wohlfarth behavior due to the unique size and spatial distribution of the rod-like Fe-Co phase formed during spinodal decomposition in an external magnetic field. The maximum coercivity is limited by single-rod effects, especially deviations from ellipsoidal shape, and by interactions between the rods. Both the exchange interaction between connected rods and magnetostatic interaction between rods are considered, and the results of our calculations show good agreement with recent experiments. Unlike systems dominated by magnetocrystalline anisotropy, coercivity in alnico is highly dependent on size, shape, and geometric distribution of the Fe-Co phase, all factors that can be tuned with appropriate chemistry and thermal-magnetic annealing

    Flight-Deck Interval Management in Near-Term Arrival Operations

    A simulation investigated NASA Air Traffic Management Technology Demonstration 1 (ATD-1) procedures and prototype technologies, including the Traffic Management Advisor for Terminal Metering, Controller-Managed Spacing tools, and Flight Deck Interval Management (FIM) equipment. The ATD-1 procedures and technologies comprise an integrated solution for managing high-density arrivals that NASA is developing and transferring to government and industry stakeholders for NextGen. During each of eighteen simulation trials, experienced controllers managed approximately two hundred departures and over-flights together with seventy-five arrivals to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in a realistic near-term environment. Eight of the arrivals were desktop-based flight simulators flown by airline pilots, which were equipped with prototype FIM equipment in two-thirds of the trials. The simulation provided system-level measures of performance of the ATD-1 integrated arrival solution, demonstrating high conformance with Performance-Based Navigation procedures and a low rate of FIM interruptions. FIM operations provided benefits under specific conditions when FIM aircraft flew connected routes to the runway. This paper focuses on the integration of FIM with the ATD-1 ground-based technologies, discusses outstanding issues, and describes avenues for further research

    Extracellular Matrix Hydrogel Promotes Tissue Remodeling, Arteriogenesis, and Perfusion in a Rat Hindlimb Ischemia Model.

    ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine acellular extracellular matrix based hydrogels as potential therapies for treating peripheral artery disease (PAD). We tested the efficacy of using a tissue specific injectable hydrogel, derived from decellularized porcine skeletal muscle (SKM), compared to a new human umbilical cord derived matrix (hUC) hydrogel, which could have greater potential for tissue regeneration because of its young tissue source age.BackgroundThe prevalence of PAD is increasing and can lead to critical limb ischemia (CLI) with potential limb amputation. Currently there are no therapies for PAD that effectively treat all of the underlying pathologies, including reduced tissue perfusion and muscle atrophy.MethodsIn a rodent hindlimb ischemia model both hydrogels were injected 1-week post-surgery and perfusion was regularly monitored with laser speckle contrast analysis (LASCA) to 35 days post-injection. Histology and immunohistochemistry were used to assess neovascularization and muscle health. Whole transcriptome analysis was further conducted on SKM injected animals on 3 and 10 days post-injection.ResultsSignificant improvements in hindlimb tissue perfusion and perfusion kinetics were observed with both biomaterials. End point histology indicated this was a result of arteriogenesis, rather than angiogenesis, and that the materials were biocompatible. Skeletal muscle fiber morphology analysis indicated that the muscle treated with the tissue specific, SKM hydrogel more closely matched healthy tissue morphology. Short term histology also indicated arteriogenesis rather than angiogenesis, as well as improved recruitment of skeletal muscle progenitors. Whole transcriptome analysis indicated that the SKM hydrogel caused a shift in the inflammatory response, decreased cell death, and increased blood vessel and muscle development.ConclusionThese results show the efficacy of an injectable ECM hydrogel alone as a potential therapy for treating patients with PAD. Our results indicate that the SKM hydrogel improved functional outcomes through stimulation of arteriogenesis and muscle progenitor cell recruitment
