Characterization of CoRoT target fields with BEST: Identification of periodic variable stars in the IR01 field
We report on observations of the CoRoT IR01 field with the Berlin Exoplanet
Search Telescope (BEST). BEST is a small aperture telescope with a wide field
of view (FOV). It is dedicated to search for variable stars within the target
fields of the CoRoT space mission to aid in minimizing false-alarm rates and
identify potential targets for additional science. CoRoT's observational
programm started in February 2007 with the "initial run" field (IR01) observed
for about two months. BEST observed this field for 12 nights spread over three
months in winter 2006. From the total of 30426 stars observed in the IR01 field
3769 were marked as suspected variable stars and 54 from them showed clear
periodicity. From these 19 periodic stars are within the part of the CoRoT FOV
covered in our data set
The Berlin Exoplanet Search Telescope II. Catalog of Variable Stars. I. Characterization of Three Southern Target Fields
A photometric survey of three Southern target fields with BEST II yielded the
detection of 2,406 previously unknown variable stars and an additional 617
stars with suspected variability. This study presents a catalog including their
coordinates, magnitudes, light curves, ephemerides, amplitudes, and type of
variability. In addition, the variability of 17 known objects is confirmed,
thus validating the results. The catalog contains a number of known and new
variables that are of interest for further astrophysical investigations, in
order to, e.g., search for additional bodies in eclipsing binary systems, or to
test stellar interior models.
Altogether, 209,070 stars were monitored with BEST II during a total of 128
nights in 2009/2010. The overall variability fraction of 1.2-1.5% in these
target fields is well comparable to similar ground-based photometric surveys.
Within the main magnitude range of , we identify
0.67(3)% of all stars to be eclipsing binaries, which indicates a completeness
of about one third for this particular type in comparison to space surveys.Comment: accepted to A
Variability survey in the CoRoT SRa01 field: Implications of eclipsing binary distribution on cluster formation in NGC 2264
Time-series photometry of the CoRoT field SRa01 was carried out with the
Berlin Exoplanet Search Telescope II (BEST II) in 2008/2009. A total of 1,161
variable stars were detected, of which 241 were previously known and 920 are
newly found. Several new, variable young stellar objects have been discovered.
The study of the spatial distribution of eclipsing binaries revealed the higher
relative frequency of Algols toward the center of the young open cluster NGC
2264. In general Algol frequency obeys an isotropic distribution of their
angular momentum vectors, except inside the cluster, where a specific
orientation of the inclinations is the case. We suggest that we see the orbital

Periodic variable stars in CoRoT field LRa02 observed with BEST II
The Berlin Exoplanet Search Telescope II (BEST II) is a small wide
field-of-view photometric survey telescope system located at the Observatorio
Cerro Armazones, Chile. The high duty cycle combined with excellent observing
conditions and millimagnitude photometric precision makes this instrument
suitable for ground based support observations for the CoRoT space mission.
Photometric data of the CoRoT LRa02 target field collected between November
2008 and March 2009 were analysed for stellar variability. The presented
results will help in the future analysis of the CoRoT data, particularly in
additional science programs related to variable stars. BEST II observes
selected CoRoT target fields ahead of the space mission. The photometric data
acquired are searched for stellar variability, periodic variable stars are
identified with time series analysis of the obtained stellar light curves. We
obtained the light curves of 104335 stars in the CoRoT LRa02 field over 41
nights. Variability was detected in light curves of 3726 stars of which 350
showed a regular period. These stars are, with the exception of 5 previously

N-Acetylmuramic Acid (MurNAc) Auxotrophy of the Oral Pathogen Tannerella forsythia: Characterization of a MurNAc Kinase and Analysis of Its Role in Cell Wall Metabolism
Tannerella forsythia is an anaerobic, Gram-negative oral pathogen that thrives in
multispecies gingival biofilms associated with periodontitis. The bacterium is auxotrophic
for the commonly essential bacterial cell wall sugar N-acetylmuramic acid (MurNAc)
and, thus, strictly depends on an exogenous supply of MurNAc for growth and
maintenance of cell morphology. A MurNAc transporter (Tf_MurT; Tanf_08375) and
an ortholog of the Escherichia coli etherase MurQ (Tf_MurQ; Tanf_08385) converting
MurNAc-6-phosphate to GlcNAc-6-phosphate were recently described for T. forsythia.
In between the respective genes on the T. forsythia genome, a putative kinase gene is
located. In this study, the putative kinase (Tf_MurK; Tanf_08380) was produced as a
recombinant protein and biochemically characterized. Kinetic studies revealed Tf_MurK
to be a 6-kinase with stringent substrate specificity for MurNAc exhibiting a 6 × 104
-
fold higher catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) for MurNAc than for N-acetylglucosamine
(GlcNAc) with kcat values of 10.5 s−1 and 0.1 s−1 and Km values of 200 µM and
116 mM, respectively. The enzyme kinetic data suggest that Tf_MurK is subject
to substrate inhibition (Ki[S] = 4.2 mM). To assess the role of Tf_MurK in the
cell wall metabolism of T. forsythia, a kinase deletion mutant (1Tf_murK::erm) was
constructed. This mutant accumulated MurNAc intracellularly in the exponential phase,
indicating the capability to take up MurNAc, but inability to catabolize MurNAc. In
the stationary phase, the MurNAc level was reduced in the mutant, while the level of
the peptidoglycan precursor UDP-MurNAc-pentapeptide was highly elevated. Further,
according to scanning electron microscopy evidence, the 1Tf_murK::erm mutant was
more tolerant toward low MurNAc concentration in the medium (below 0.5 µg/ml) before
transition from healthy, rod-shaped to fusiform cells occurred, while the parent strain required > 1 µg/ml MurNAc for optimal growth. These data reveal that T. forsythia
readily catabolizes exogenous MurNAc but simultaneously channels a proportion of the
sugar into peptidoglycan biosynthesis. Deletion of Tf_murK blocks MurNAc catabolism
and allows the direction of MurNAc solely to peptidoglycan biosynthesis, resulting in a
growth advantage in MurNAc-depleted medium. This work increases our understanding
of the T. forsythia cell wall metabolism and may pave new routes for lead finding in the
treatment of periodontitis
THz packaging solution for low cost si-based 40 Gb/s wireless link system
This paper presents an innovative low-cost transmitter solution aimed at improving telecommunication networks capacities in order to support the massive data traffic growth. Sub-THz frequencies > 200 GHz are considered to target at least 40 Gb/s. The proposed transmitter consists of a Silicon Photonic integrated sub-THz source and an industrial antenna integrated in HDI organic packaging substrate. As these components were experimentally evaluated, a real-time error free wireless data transmission of 10 Gb/s was successfully achieved and an antenna gain of 5.5 dBi was measured in the broadside direction from 220 GHz to 240 GHz (8.7% relative bandwidth). Venus transit 2004: Illustrating the capability of exoplanet transmission spectroscopy
The transit of Venus in 2004 offered the rare possibility to remotely sense a
well-known planetary atmosphere using ground-based observations for absorption
spectroscopy. Transmission spectra of Venus' atmosphere were obtained in the
near infrared using the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) in Tenerife. Since the
instrument was designed to measure the very bright photosphere of the Sun,
extracting Venus' atmosphere was challenging. CO_2 absorption lines could be
identified in the upper Venus atmosphere. Moreover, the relative abundance of
the three most abundant CO_2 isotopologues could be determined. The
observations resolved Venus' limb, showing Doppler-shifted absorption lines
that are probably caused by high-altitude winds.

Ground-based photometry of space-based transit detections: Photometric follow-up of the CoRoT mission
The motivation, techniques and performance of the ground-based photometric
follow-up of transit detections by the CoRoT space mission are presented. Its
principal raison d'\^{e}tre arises from the much higher spatial resolution of
common ground-based telescopes in comparison to CoRoT's cameras. This allows
the identification of many transit candidates as arising from eclipsing
binaries that are contaminating CoRoT's lightcurves, even in low-amplitude
transit events that cannot be detected with ground-based obervations. For the
ground observations, 'on'-'off' photometry is now largely employed, in which
only a short timeseries during a transit and a section outside a transit is
observed and compared photometrically. CoRoT planet candidates' transits are
being observed by a dedicated team with access to telescopes with sizes ranging
from 0.2 to 2 m. As an example, the process that led to the rejection of
contaminating eclipsing binaries near the host star of the Super-Earth planet
CoRoT-7b is shown. Experiences and techniques from this work may also be useful
for other transit-detection experiments, when the discovery instrument obtains

Scientific Opinion on additional scientific data related to the safety of preparations of Rheum palmatum L., Rheum officinale Baill. and their hybrids, Rhamnus purshiana DC., Rhamnus frangula L. and Cassia senna L., submitted pursuant to Article 8(4) of Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006
The Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety of plant preparations from the root or rhizome of Rheum palmatum L., Rheum officinale Baill. and their hybrids, from the bark of Rhamnus frangula L. and Rhamnus purshiana DC. and from the leaf or fruit of Cassia senna L., which have been placed under Union scrutiny in Part C of Annex III in accordance with Article 8(4) of Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006. The NDA Panel reviewed the additional scientific data submitted during the period of scrutiny and the public consultation by interested parties. The pertinent scientific data were in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity studies on the plant preparations under consideration. All the results of the genotoxicity studies on plant preparations were negative. However, the plant preparations that were tested in the submitted studies were not sufficiently characterised with respect to the content of total and individual hydroxyanthracene derivatives (HADs) and components other than HADs. The studies confirmed the presence of ■■■■■, known to be genotoxic in vivo, and ■■■■■, shown to be genotoxic in vitro. In line with the EFSA Scientific Committee statement on genotoxicity assessment of chemical mixtures, considering the presence of an in vivo genotoxic compound, the plant preparations used in these studies have to be considered of concern for genotoxicity. Thus, the safety of preparations containing HADs from the root or rhizome of Rheum palmatum L., Rheum officinale Baill. and their hybrids, from the leaf or fruit of Cassia senna L. and from the bark of Rhamnus frangula L. and Rhamnus purshiana DC. cannot be established based on the submitted studies
