This study aims to produce the design of a teaching-learning sequence (TLS) on the chemistry of rare earth elements topic to strengthen the system thinking of pre-service chemistry teachers. The research method used is a mixed-method using the Model of Educational Reconstruction framework. The instruments used were interview guidelines, concept maps, repertory grids, dynamic and cyclic thinking questionnaires and questionnaires about learning. The design of TLS was developed based on the results of content analysis from 6 literatures and the results of an initial conception interview from 17 students on the topic of rare earth elements. The system thinking used is the System Thinking Hierarchy model. The design of TLS resulted contains eight stages. The TLS design was implemented to 27 pre-service chemistry teachers at one of the state universities in Bandung. The results showed that student knowledge construction was dominant in reasoning. From the implementation results, one system thinking is not achieved, namely retrospective thinking. The results of the concept map show an increase in the number of concepts from 373 to 734 concepts. The repertory grid results show that student’s system thinking decreases in the analysis and synthesis skills that develop into implementation skills with 14.1% to 22.2%. However, there is no significant difference between constructs formed by students before and after implementing the TLS design. The questionnaire results on dynamic thinking skills and cyclical thinking show that students can understand the components of rare earth elements changing and forming cycles. The final conception is that 85.2% of students strongly agree and feel that this topic is interesting to learn

Rare Earth Elements (REE) is an interesting chemistry topic, especially due to current technology development. However, new learning designs of REE need to be developed for Pre-service Chemistry Teachers (PCT) as it is not yet available. A good design is constructed by analyzing PCT pre-conceptions based on the technical difficulties faced by the students during teaching process. The study aims to identify PCT's pre-conceptions focusing on REE topic. We conducted this research involving 17 chemistry education students at the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Bandung. Data was collected through interviews and analyzed using the Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) method. Our results highlight that PCT had difficulties with chemistry content of REE, especially about electronic configuration, magnetic, and luminescence properties. In addition, PCT faced difficulties correlating electronic configuration's chemistry content into contexts. Based on the interview results, 88.2% of the students agree with the development learning design for undergraduate chemistry students. As a result, we conclude that technical difficulties and misconceptions about REE can be overcome by developing the learning design based on the need of the students.

The lack of repeated visits of old patients will increase the cost of promotion to get new patients, one way to maintain old patients is to grow patient loyalty. Some patients in Arosuka General Hospital are still not loyal because they come to the hospital only for the first examination, then the patient goes to another hospital, some patients have not recommended the hospital to others, one of the factors that influence patient loyalty is the quality of service. This study aims to determine the relationship between service quality servqual dimensions and patient loyalty in Arosuka Hospital. The type of this study is cross sectional. The population in this study were all patients who came to the Arosuka Hospital polyclinic in 2018, a sample of 203 people with a proportional random sampling sampling technique conducted in April 2018 with the analysis used was the chi square test. The statistical test results obtained 60.1% of respondents not loyal, 61.6% of respondents stated that tangible was not good, 37.9% of respondents stated that reliability was not good, 51.2% of respondents stated that they were less responsive, 43.3% of respondents said assurace was not good, and 48.8% of respondents said empaty not good. There is a significant relationship between tangible, reliability, responsive, assurance, empathy and patient loyalty in Arosuka Hospital with a value of p <0.05 (p = 0.001, p = 0.015, p = 0.010, p = 0.002, p = 0.022). Tangible is the most dominant factor associated with patient loyalty. It is expected that the director will make a policy on service hours, sanctions for those who do not obey the service hours, coordinate with the local government in procuring transportation for patients, the head of the ward designing a comfortable waiting room, and providing suggestion boxes for patients

Chk2 and p53 Are Haploinsufficient with Dependent and Independent Functions to Eliminate Cells after Telomere Loss

    Get PDF
The mechanisms that cells use to monitor telomere integrity, and the array of responses that may be induced, are not fully defined. To date there have been no studies in animals describing the ability of cells to survive and contribute to adult organs following telomere loss. We developed assays to monitor the ability of somatic cells to proliferate and differentiate after telomere loss. Here we show that p53 and Chk2 limit the growth and differentiation of cells that lose a telomere. Furthermore, our results show that two copies of the genes encoding p53 and Chk2 are required for the cell to mount a rapid wildtype response to a missing telomere. Finally, our results show that, while Chk2 functions by activating the p53-dependent apoptotic cascade, Chk2 also functions independently of p53 to limit survival. In spite of these mechanisms to eliminate cells that have lost a telomere, we find that such cells can make a substantial contribution to differentiated adult tissues

Taming the tiger by the tail: modulation of DNA damage responses by telomeres

    Get PDF
Telomeres are by definition stable and inert chromosome ends, whereas internal chromosome breaks are potent stimulators of the DNA damage response (DDR). Telomeres do not, as might be expected, exclude DDR proteins from chromosome ends but instead engage with many DDR proteins. However, the most powerful DDRs, those that might induce chromosome fusion or cell-cycle arrest, are inhibited at telomeres. In budding yeast, many DDR proteins that accumulate most rapidly at double strand breaks (DSBs), have important functions in physiological telomere maintenance, whereas DDR proteins that arrive later tend to have less important functions. Considerable diversity in telomere structure has evolved in different organisms and, perhaps reflecting this diversity, different DDR proteins seem to have distinct roles in telomere physiology in different organisms. Drawing principally on studies in simple model organisms such as budding yeast, in which many fundamental aspects of the DDR and telomere biology have been established; current views on how telomeres harness aspects of DDR pathways to maintain telomere stability and permit cell-cycle division are discussed
