Structure of Polyelectrolytes in Poor Solvent
We present simulations on charged polymers in poor solvent. First we
investigate in detail the dilute concentration range with and without imposed
extension constraints. The resulting necklace polymer conformations are
analyzed in detail. We find strong fluctuations in the number of pearls and
their sizes leading only to small signatures in the form factor and the
force-extension relation. The scaling of the peak in the structure factor with
the monomer density shows a pertinent different behavior from good solvent
chains.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. submitted to EP
Anomalous interactions in confined charge-stabilized colloid
Charge-stabilized colloidal spheres dispersed in weak 1:1 electrolytes are
supposed to repel each other. Consequently, experimental evidence for anomalous
long-ranged like-charged attractions induced by geometric confinement inspired
a burst of activity. This has largely subsided because of nagging doubts
regarding the experiments' reliability and interpretation. We describe a new
class of thermodynamically self-consistent colloidal interaction measurements
that confirm the appearance of pairwise attractions among colloidal spheres
confined by one or two bounding walls. In addition to supporting previous
claims for this as-yet unexplained effect, these measurements also cast new
light on its mechanism.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX4. Conference proceedings for CODEF-04,

On evidence: approach from the philosophical hermeneutics
In order to make the term analytical evidence to reveal the original meaning of its application to account for hermeneutical situations in the world of life, the study was conducted from philosophical hermeneutics stating the following: viewpoint, understanding horizon and fusion of horizons. In the viewpoint uses of evidence are described. The horizon of understanding traces the history of the concept of evidence highlighting the perspective of Husserl. In the fusion of horizons evidence described in three levels of reality: perceived (evidence from beliefs), known (evidence from knowledge) and constructed (deliberative evidence). We conclude that the historicity of the world allows rehabilitate the tradition and gives meaning to the evidence as the fact that it gets in the eyes through the original experience of hermeneutics situation that exists in practice
Statistical mechanics of RNA folding: a lattice approach
We propose a lattice model for RNA based on a self-interacting two-tolerant
trail. Self-avoidance and elements of tertiary structure are taken into
account. We investigate a simple version of the model in which the native state
of RNA consists of just one hairpin. Using exact arguments and Monte Carlo
simulations we determine the phase diagram for this case. We show that the
denaturation transition is first order and can either occur directly or through
an intermediate molten phase.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
On the nature of long-range contributions to pair interactions between charged colloids in two dimensions
We perform a detailed analysis of solutions of the inverse problem applied to
experimentally measured two-dimensional radial distribution functions for
highly charged latex dispersions. The experiments are carried out at high
colloidal densities and under low-salt conditions. At the highest studied
densities, the extracted effective pair potentials contain long-range
attractive part. At the same time, we find that for the best distribution
functions available the range of stability of the solutions is limited by the
nearest neighbour distance between the colloidal particles. Moreover, the
measured pair distribution functions can be explained by purely repulsive pair
potentials contained in the stable part of the solution.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Waste valorization in winery and distillery industry by producing biofertilizers and organic amendments
Deep Archetypal Analysis
"Deep Archetypal Analysis" generates latent representations of
high-dimensional datasets in terms of fractions of intuitively understandable
basic entities called archetypes. The proposed method is an extension of linear
"Archetypal Analysis" (AA), an unsupervised method to represent multivariate
data points as sparse convex combinations of extremal elements of the dataset.
Unlike the original formulation of AA, "Deep AA" can also handle side
information and provides the ability for data-driven representation learning
which reduces the dependence on expert knowledge. Our method is motivated by
studies of evolutionary trade-offs in biology where archetypes are species
highly adapted to a single task. Along these lines, we demonstrate that "Deep
AA" also lends itself to the supervised exploration of chemical space, marking
a distinct starting point for de novo molecular design. In the unsupervised
setting we show how "Deep AA" is used on CelebA to identify archetypal faces.
These can then be superimposed in order to generate new faces which inherit
dominant traits of the archetypes they are based on.Comment: Published at the German Conference on Pattern Recognition 2019 (GCPR

Carbothermal reduction of mill scales formed on steel billets during continuous casting
AbstractA billet is a bar made from crude steel which surface contains scales which are rich in iron oxides. This study presents the carbothermal reduction of the scales formed in steel billets. The process included the reaction of the iron oxides contents with carbon (in ratio 5:1) and annealing in a tubular furnace under argon atmosphere. The occurred reactions are discussed using thermodynamic calculations and thermal analysis which indicate a three-stage reduction process Fe3O4 ➔ FeO ➔ Fe3C ➔α-Fe with intermediate reactions at the interval temperature 960 and 1300 °C. The X-ray diffraction confirms the reduction to α-Fe with minor presence of unreacted C, magnetite and wustite. Mössbauer spectroscopy analysis was performed at room temperature where a typical sextet corresponding to the dominant α-Fe is shown as well as wustite, magnetite and cementite to a lesser extent. The magnetization measurements confirm the ferromagnetic state corresponding to the α-Fe.</jats:p
