    Bose Gases Near Unitarity

    We study the properties of strongly interacting Bose gases at the density and temperature regime when the three-body recombination rate is substantially reduced. In this regime, one can have a Bose gas with all particles in scattering states (i.e. the "upper branch") with little loss even at unitarity over the duration of the experiment. We show that because of bosonic enhancement, pair formation is shifted to the atomic side of the original resonance (where scattering length as<0a_s<0), opposite to the fermionic case. In a trap, a repulsive Bose gas remains mechanically stable when brought across resonance to the atomic side until it reaches a critical scattering length as∗<0a_{s}^{\ast}<0. For as<as∗a_s<a_{s}^{\ast}, the density consists of a core of upper branch bosons surrounded by an outer layer of equilibrium phase. The conditions of low three-body recombination requires that the particle number N<α(T/ω)5/2N<\alpha (T/\omega)^{5/2} in a harmonic trap with frequency ω\omega, where α\alpha is a constant.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Serum relaxin levels are reduced in pregnant women with a history of recurrent miscarriage, and correlate with maternal uterine artery Doppler indices in first trimester

    Objectives: Defective implantation is a mechanism for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). We sought to determine whether the serum expression of human relaxin-2 (RLX) is impaired in women with a history of RPL. Study design: Employing a prospective case-controlled design we studied 20 pregnant women with a history of RPL and 20 age-matched women with no history of RPL (NRPL). We measured serum relaxin-2 levels by ELISA at 6-8. 10-12, 20, and 34 weeks gestation and in cord blood, and maternal uterine artery Doppler resistance index (RI) at >= 10 weeks gestation. Results: Relaxin rose to a peak at 12 weeks, and gradually declined towards term. At all gestations, women with a history of RPL had lower RLX levels than women without. At 10-12 weeks gestation, uterine artery RI correlated with serum RLX for both RPL and NRPL. In the NRPL group at 10-12 weeks the presence of a notched waveform was associated with higher RLX levels than the absence of a notch (mean 2.1 ng/ml vs. 1.3 ng/ml, P < 0.05) and also at 20 weeks (2.1 ng/ml vs. 0.95 ng/ml, P < 0.05) but no such difference was seen in the RPL group. Umbilical venous RLX was 4-fold higher in the RPL group than the NRPL group. Conclusion: Women with a history of RPL demonstrate attenuated levels of serum RLX across all pregnancy trimesters. How dysregulated RLX metabolism may contribute to adverse pregnancy outcome in RPL requires further investigation. Crown Copyright (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

    Metastable chaos in the ammonia ring laser

    We report experimental studies of metastable chaos in the far-infrared ammonia ring: laser. When the laser pump power is switched from above chaos threshold to slightly below, chaotic intensity pulsations continue for a varying time afterward before decaying to either periodic or cw emission. The behavior is in good qualitative agreement with that predicted by the Lorenz equations, previously used to describe this laser. The statistical distribution of the duration of the chaotic transient is measured and shown to be in excellent agreement with the Lorenz equations in showing a modified exponential distribution. We also give a brief numerical analysis and graphical visualization of the Lorenz equations in phase space illustrating the boundary between the metastable chaotic and the stable fixed point basins of attraction. This provides an intuitive understanding of the metastable dynamics of the Lorenz equations and the experimental system

    Provenance documentation to enable explainable and trustworthy AI: A literature review

    ABSTRACTRecently artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models have demonstrated remarkable progress with applications developed in various domains. It is also increasingly discussed that AI and ML models and applications should be transparent, explainable, and trustworthy. Accordingly, the field of Explainable AI (XAI) is expanding rapidly. XAI holds substantial promise for improving trust and transparency in AI-based systems by explaining how complex models such as the deep neural network (DNN) produces their outcomes. Moreover, many researchers and practitioners consider that using provenance to explain these complex models will help improve transparency in AI-based systems. In this paper, we conduct a systematic literature review of provenance, XAI, and trustworthy AI (TAI) to explain the fundamental concepts and illustrate the potential of using provenance as a medium to help accomplish explainability in AI-based systems. Moreover, we also discuss the patterns of recent developments in this area and offer a vision for research in the near future. We hope this literature review will serve as a starting point for scholars and practitioners interested in learning about essential components of provenance, XAI, and TAI

    Exact calculation of the skyrmion lifetime in a ferromagnetic Bose condensate

    The tunneling rate of a skyrmion in ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Bose condensates through an off-centered potential barrier is calculated exactly with the periodic instanton method. The prefactor is shown to depend on the chemical potential of the core atoms, at which level the atom tunnels. Our results can be readily extended to estimate the lifetime of other topological excitations in the condensate, such as vortices and monopoles.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, to appear Phys. Rev.

    Improved Dynamical Masses for Six Brown Dwarf Companions Using Hipparcos and Gaia EDR3

    We present comprehensive orbital analyses and dynamical masses for the substellar companions Gl~229~B, Gl~758~B, HD~13724~B, HD~19467~B, HD~33632~Ab, and HD~72946~B. Our dynamical fits incorporate radial velocities, relative astrometry, and most importantly calibrated Hipparcos-Gaia EDR3 accelerations. For HD~33632~A and HD~72946 we perform three-body fits that account for their outer stellar companions. We present new relative astrometry of Gl~229~B with Keck/NIRC2, extending its observed baseline to 25 years. We obtain a <<1\% mass measurement of 71.4±0.6 MJup71.4 \pm 0.6\,M_{\rm Jup} for the first T dwarf Gl~229~B and a 1.2\% mass measurement of its host star (0.579±0.007 M⊙0.579 \pm 0.007\,M_{\odot}) that agrees with the high-mass-end of the M dwarf mass-luminosity relation. We perform a homogeneous analysis of the host stars' ages and use them, along with the companions' measured masses and luminosities, to test substellar evolutionary models. Gl~229~B is the most discrepant, as models predict that an object this massive cannot cool to such a low luminosity within a Hubble time, implying that it may be an unresolved binary. The other companions are generally consistent with models, except for HD~13724~B that has a host-star activity age 3.8σ\sigma older than its substellar cooling age. Examining our results in context with other mass-age-luminosity benchmarks, we find no trend with spectral type but instead note that younger or lower-mass brown dwarfs are over-luminous compared to models, while older or higher-mass brown dwarfs are under-luminous. The presented mass measurements for some companions are so precise that the stellar host ages, not the masses, limit the analysis.Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ.     Factors that Determine Catastrophic Expenditure for Tuberculosis Care: a Patient Survey in China

    Background: Tuberculosis (TB) often causes catastrophic economic effects on both the individual suffering the disease and their households. A number of studies have analyzed patient and household expenditure on TB care, but there does not appear to be any that have assessed the incidence, intensity and determinants of catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) relating to TB care in China. That will be the objective of this paper. Methods: The data used for this study were derived from the baseline survey of the China Government – Gates Foundation TB Phase II program. Our analysis included 747 TB cases. Catastrophic health expenditure for TB care was estimated using two approaches, with households defined as experiencing CHE if their annual expenditure on TB care: (a) exceeded 10 % of total household income; and (b) exceeded 40 % of their non-food expenditure (capacity to pay). Chi-square tests were used to identify associated factors and logistic regression analysis to identify the determinants of CHE. Results: The incidence of CHE was 66.8 % using the household income measure and 54.7 % using non-food expenditure (capacity to pay). An inverse association was observed between CHE rates and household income level. Significant determinants of CHE were: age, household size, employment status, health insurance status, patient income as a percentage of total household income, hospitalization and status as a minimum living security household. Factors including gender, marital status and type of TB case had no significant associations with CHE. Conclusions: Catastrophic health expenditure incidence from TB care is high in China. An integrated policy expanding the free treatment package and ensuring universal coverage, especially the height of UHC for TB patients, is needed. Financial and social protection interventions are essential for identified at-risk groups

    An Integrated-Photonics Optical-Frequency Synthesizer

    Integrated-photonics microchips now enable a range of advanced functionalities for high-coherence applications such as data transmission, highly optimized physical sensors, and harnessing quantum states, but with cost, efficiency, and portability much beyond tabletop experiments. Through high-volume semiconductor processing built around advanced materials there exists an opportunity for integrated devices to impact applications cutting across disciplines of basic science and technology. Here we show how to synthesize the absolute frequency of a lightwave signal, using integrated photonics to implement lasers, system interconnects, and nonlinear frequency comb generation. The laser frequency output of our synthesizer is programmed by a microwave clock across 4 THz near 1550 nm with 1 Hz resolution and traceability to the SI second. This is accomplished with a heterogeneously integrated III/V-Si tunable laser, which is guided by dual dissipative-Kerr-soliton frequency combs fabricated on silicon chips. Through out-of-loop measurements of the phase-coherent, microwave-to-optical link, we verify that the fractional-frequency instability of the integrated photonics synthesizer matches the 7.0∗10−137.0*10^{-13} reference-clock instability for a 1 second acquisition, and constrain any synthesis error to 7.7∗10−157.7*10^{-15} while stepping the synthesizer across the telecommunication C band. Any application of an optical frequency source would be enabled by the precision optical synthesis presented here. Building on the ubiquitous capability in the microwave domain, our results demonstrate a first path to synthesis with integrated photonics, leveraging low-cost, low-power, and compact features that will be critical for its widespread use.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Sleep-wake sensitive mechanisms of adenosine release in the basal forebrain of rodents : an in vitro study

    Adenosine acting in the basal forebrain is a key mediator of sleep homeostasis. Extracellular adenosine concentrations increase during wakefulness, especially during prolonged wakefulness and lead to increased sleep pressure and subsequent rebound sleep. The release of endogenous adenosine during the sleep-wake cycle has mainly been studied in vivo with microdialysis techniques. The biochemical changes that accompany sleep-wake status may be preserved in vitro. We have therefore used adenosine-sensitive biosensors in slices of the basal forebrain (BFB) to study both depolarization-evoked adenosine release and the steady state adenosine tone in rats, mice and hamsters. Adenosine release was evoked by high K+, AMPA, NMDA and mGlu receptor agonists, but not by other transmitters associated with wakefulness such as orexin, histamine or neurotensin. Evoked and basal adenosine release in the BFB in vitro exhibited three key features: the magnitude of each varied systematically with the diurnal time at which the animal was sacrificed; sleep deprivation prior to sacrifice greatly increased both evoked adenosine release and the basal tone; and the enhancement of evoked adenosine release and basal tone resulting from sleep deprivation was reversed by the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) inhibitor, 1400 W. These data indicate that characteristics of adenosine release recorded in the BFB in vitro reflect those that have been linked in vivo to the homeostatic control of sleep. Our results provide methodologically independent support for a key role for induction of iNOS as a trigger for enhanced adenosine release following sleep deprivation and suggest that this induction may constitute a biochemical memory of this state
