    Patterns of genetic structure among Hawaiian corals of the genus Pocillopora yield clusters of individuals that are compatible with morphology.

    International audienceSix variable sequence markers are developed and analyzed to find out species boundaries in Hawaiian corals of the genus Pocillopora: the putative mitochondrial control region; a recently discovered, hypervariable mitochondrial open reading frame; the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2), located in the nuclear ribosomal DNA; three nuclear introns of calmodulin, elongation factor-1alpha and the ATP synthase beta subunit. Using the first two markers, we identify five distinct mitochondrial lineages and these lineages are compatible with morphology. The situation is more complex with nuclear markers since more than two haplotypes are observed in some individuals. To detect clusters of individuals, haplotype networks are constructed with additional connections drawn between co-occurring haplotypes to delineate potential fields for recombination: few clusters of nuclear haplotypes are found to correspond to clusters of individuals, but those that are detected (mostly in the ITS2 dataset) are also compatible with morphology

    Membranous urethral length measurement on preoperative MRI to predict incontinence after radical prostatectomy:a literature review towards a proposal for measurement standardization

    Objectives: To investigate the membranous urethral length (MUL) measurement and its interobserver agreement, and propose literature-based recommendations to standardize MUL measurement for increasing interobserver agreement. MUL measurements based on prostate MRI scans, for urinary incontinence risk assessment before radical prostatectomy (RP), may influence treatment decision-making in men with localised prostate cancer. Before implementation in clinical practise, MRI-based MUL measurements need standardization to improve observer agreement. Methods: Online libraries were searched up to August 5, 2022, on MUL measurements. Two reviewers performed article selection and critical appraisal. Papers reporting on preoperative MUL measurements and urinary continence correlation were selected. Extracted information included measuring procedures, MRI sequences, population mean/median values, and observer agreement. Results: Fifty papers were included. Studies that specified the MRI sequence used T2-weighted images and used either coronal images (n = 13), sagittal images (n = 18), or both (n = 12) for MUL measurements. ‘Prostatic apex’ was the most common description of the proximal membranous urethra landmark and ‘level/entry of the urethra into the penile bulb’ was the most common description of the distal landmark. Population mean (median) MUL value range was 10.4–17.1 mm (7.3–17.3 mm), suggesting either population or measurement differences. Detailed measurement technique descriptions for reproducibility were lacking. Recommendations on MRI-based MUL measurement were formulated by using anatomical landmarks and detailed descriptions and illustrations. Conclusions: In order to improve on measurement variability, a literature-based measuring method of the MUL was proposed, supported by several illustrative case studies, in an attempt to standardize MRI-based MUL measurements for appropriate urinary incontinence risk preoperatively. Clinical relevance statement: Implementation of MUL measurements into clinical practise for personalized post-prostatectomy continence prediction is hampered by lack of standardization and suboptimal interobserver agreement. Our proposed standardized MUL measurement aims to facilitate standardization and to improve the interobserver agreement. Key Points: • Variable approaches for membranous urethral length measurement are being used, without detailed description and with substantial differences in length of the membranous urethra, hampering standardization. • Limited interobserver agreement for membranous urethral length measurement was observed in several studies, while preoperative incontinence risk assessment necessitates high interobserver agreement. • Literature-based recommendations are proposed to standardize MRI-based membranous urethral length measurement for increasing interobserver agreement and improving preoperative incontinence risk assessment, using anatomical landmarks on sagittal T2-weighted images.</p

    Deciduous Trees and the Application of Universal DNA Barcodes: A Case Study on the Circumpolar Fraxinus

    The utility of DNA barcoding for identifying representative specimens of the circumpolar tree genus Fraxinus (56 species) was investigated. We examined the genetic variability of several loci suggested in chloroplast DNA barcode protocols such as matK, rpoB, rpoC1 and trnH-psbA in a large worldwide sample of Fraxinus species. The chloroplast intergenic spacer rpl32-trnL was further assessed in search for a potentially variable and useful locus. The results of the study suggest that the proposed cpDNA loci, alone or in combination, cannot fully discriminate among species because of the generally low rates of substitution in the chloroplast genome of Fraxinus. The intergenic spacer trnH-psbA was the best performing locus, but genetic distance-based discrimination was moderately successful and only resulted in the separation of the samples at the subgenus level. Use of the BLAST approach was better than the neighbor-joining tree reconstruction method with pairwise Kimura's two-parameter rates of substitution, but allowed for the correct identification of only less than half of the species sampled. Such rates are substantially lower than the success rate required for a standardised barcoding approach. Consequently, the current cpDNA barcodes are inadequate to fully discriminate Fraxinus species. Given that a low rate of substitution is common among the plastid genomes of trees, the use of the plant cpDNA “universal” barcode may not be suitable for the safe identification of tree species below a generic or sectional level.     Objectifs Cet article vise à explorer la nécessité du développement professionnel continu dans les soins infirmiers, les besoins éducatifs, et ses impacts sur les soins infirmiers en oncologie. Sources des données Des bases de données électroniques comprenant Cinahl, Medline (Pubmed), Cairn, et la littérature grise ont été recherchées en utilisant Google Scholar jusqu’en octobre 2020. Conclusion La formation continue et les mises à jour des connaissances fondées sur des données probantes au sein de la profession infirmière en oncologie sont essentielles pour permettre des soins infirmiers en oncologie sûrs et efficaces. Un cadre commun à toutes les infirmières en oncologie européennes permet de standardiser la formation. Implications pour la pratique infirmière En raison de la complexité et de l’évolution rapide des soins en cancérologie, les infirmières sont tenues de maintenir un haut niveau de formation et de s’engager à apprendre tout au long de leur vie pour fournir des soins de haute qualité. Les lois nationales sur la santé et les sociétés européennes d’infirmières ont élaboré des cadres éducatifs pour les soins infirmiers en cancérologie afin de répondre aux besoins éducatifs. Les cadres pédagogiques internationaux peuvent constituer une étape importante vers l’harmonisation du rôle de l’infirmière spécialisée en oncologie et la reconnaissance internationale peut améliorer la formation et le développement professionnel en vue d’établir le rôle de l’infirmière spécialisée en oncologie audelà des différentes frontières internationales
