CMB Fluctuation Amplitude from Dark Energy Partitions
It is assumed that the dark energy observed today is frozen as a result of a
phase transition involving the source of that energy. Postulating that the dark
energy de-coherence which results from this phase transition drives statistical
variations in the energy density specifies a class of cosmological models in
which the cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuation amplitude at last

Polarization states of polydomain epitaxial Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 thin films and their dielectric properties
Ferroelectric and dielectric properties of polydomain (twinned)
single-crystal Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 thin films are described with the aid of a
nonlinear thermodynamic theory, which has been developed recently for epitaxial
ferroelectric films with dense laminar domain structures. For Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3
(PZT) films with compositions x = 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5, and 0.4, the "misfit
strain-temperature" phase diagrams are calculated and compared with each other.
It is found that the equilibrium diagrams of PZT films with x > 0.7 are similar
to the diagram of PbTiO3 films. They consist of only four different stability
ranges, which correspond to the paraelectric phase, single-domain tetragonal
ferroelectric phase, and two pseudo-tetragonal domain patterns. In contrast, at
x = 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6, the equilibrium diagram displays a rich variety of
stable polarization states, involving at least one monoclinic polydomain state.
Using the developed phase diagrams, the mean out-of-plane polarization of a
poled PZT film is calculated as a function of the misfit strain and
composition. Theoretical results are compared with the measured remanent
polarizations of PZT films grown on SrTiO3. Dependence of the out-of-plane
dielectric response of PZT films on the misfit strain in the heterostructure is

(Giant) Vortex - (anti) vortex interaction in bulk superconductors: The Ginzburg-Landau theory
The vortex-vortex interaction potential in bulk superconductors is calculated
within the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is obtained from a numerical
solution of a set of two coupled non-linear GL differential equations for the
vector potential and the superconducting order parameter, where the merger of
vortices into a giant vortex is allowed. Further, the interaction potentials
between a vortex and a giant vortex and between a vortex and an antivortex are
obtained for both type-I and type-II superconductors. Our numerical results
agree asymptotically with the analytical expressions for large inter-vortex
separations which are available in the literature. We propose new empirical
expressions valid over the full interaction range, which are fitted to our
numerical data for different values of the GL parameter
Superconductivity in domains with corners
We study the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau functional in a domain with
corners for exterior magnetic field strengths near the critical field where the
transition from the superconducting to the normal state occurs. We discuss and
clarify the definition of this field and obtain a complete asymptotic expansion
for it in the large regime. Furthermore, we discuss nucleation of
superconductivity at the boundary
Dust Stratification in Young Circumstellar Disks
We present high-resolution infrared spectra of four YSOs (T Tau N, T Tau S,
RNO 91, and HL Tau). The spectra exhibit narrow absorption lines of 12CO, 13CO,
and C18O as well as broad emission lines of gas phase12CO. The narrow
absorption lines of CO are shown to originate from the colder circumstellar
gas. We find that the line of sight gas column densities resulting from the CO
absorption lines are much higher than expected for the measured extinction for
each source and suggest the gas to dust ratio is measuring the dust settling
and/or grain coagulation in these extended disks. We provide a model of
turbulence, dust settling and grain growth to explain the results. The
techniques presented here allow us to provide some observationally-motivated
bounds on accretion disk alpha in protostellar systems
The high-lying Li levels at excitation energy around 21 MeV
The H+He cluster structure in Li was investigated by the
H(,H He)n kinematically complete experiment at the incident
energy = 67.2 MeV. We have observed two resonances at =
21.30 and 21.90 MeV which are consistent with the He(H, )Li
analysis in the Ajzenberg-Selove compilation. Our data are compared with the
previous experimental data and the RGM and CSRGM calculations.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in J. Phys. Soc. Jp
The crime drop and the security hypothesis
Major crime drops were experienced in the United States and most other industrialised countries for a decade from the early to mid-1990s. Yet there is little agreement over explanation or lessons for policy. Here it is proposed that change in the quantity and quality of security was a key driver of the crime drop. From evidence relating to vehicle theft in two countries it is concluded that electronic immobilisers and central locking were particularly effective. It is suggested that reduced car theft may have induced drops in other crime including violence. From this platform a broader security hypothesis, linked to routine activity and opportunity theory, is outlined
Perturbation of a lattice spectral band by a nearby resonance
A soluble model of weakly coupled "molecular" and "nuclear" Hamiltonians is
studied in order to exhibit explicitly the mechanism leading to the enhancement
of fusion probability in case of a narrow near-threshold nuclear resonance. We,
further, consider molecular cells of this type being arranged in lattice
structures. It is shown that if the real part of the narrow nuclear resonance
lies within the molecular band generated by the intercellular interaction, an
enhancement, proportional to the inverse width of the nuclear resonance, is to

The social construction of 'dowry deaths'
The classification of cause of death is real in its consequences: for the reputation of the deceased, for her family, for those who may be implicated, and for epidemiological and social research and policies and practices that may follow from it. The study reported here refers specifically to the processes involved in classifying deaths of women from burns in India. In particular, it examines the determination of 'dowry death', a class used in India, but not in other jurisdictions. Classification of death is situated within a framework of special legal provisions intended to protect vulnerable women from dowry-related violence and abuse. The findings are based on 33 case studies tracked in hospital in real time, and interviews with 14 physicians and 14 police officers with experience of dealing with burns cases. The formal class into which any given death is allocated is shown to result from motivated accounting processes representing the interests and resources available to the doctors, victims, victim families, the victim's husband and his family, and ultimately, the police. These processes may lead to biases in research and to injustice in the treatment of victims and alleged offenders. Suggestions are made for methods of ameliorating the risks
Quasiparticles in the Superconducting State of High-T_c Metals
We consider the behavior of quasiparticles in the superconducting state of
high-T_c metals within the framework of the theory of superconducting state
based on the fermion condensation quantum phase transition. We show that the
behavior coincides with the behavior of Bogoliubov quasiparticles, whereas the
maximum value of the superconducting gap and other exotic properties are
determined by the presence of the fermion condensate. If at low temperatures
the normal state is recovered by the application of a magnetic field
suppressing the superconductivity, the induced state can be viewed as Landau
Fermi liquid. These observations are in good agreement with recent experimental
