Collapse transition in polymer models with multiple monomers per site and multiple bonds per edge
We present results from extensive Monte Carlo simulations of polymer models
where each lattice site can be visited by up to monomers and no restriction
is imposed on the number of bonds on each lattice edge. These \textit{multiple
monomer per site} (MMS) models are investigated on the square and cubic
lattices, for and , by associating Boltzmann weights ,
and to sites visited by 1, 2 and
3 monomers, respectively. Two versions of the MMS models are considered for
which immediate reversals of the walks are allowed (RA) or forbidden (RF). In
contrast to previous simulations of these models, we find the same
thermodynamic behavior for both RA and RF versions. In three-dimensions, the
phase diagrams - in space - are featured by coil and
globule phases separated by a line of points, as thoroughly
demonstrated by the metric , crossover and entropic
exponents. The existence of the -lines is also confirmed by the second
virial coefficient. This shows that no discontinuous collapse transition exists
in these models, in contrast to previous claims based on a weak bimodality
observed in some distributions, which indeed exists in a narrow region very
close to the -line when . Interestingly, in
two-dimensions, only a crossover is found between the coil and globule phases
Strategies and interventions on responsible and rational use of benzodiazepines and derivates in the treatment of anxiety and sleep disorders
ABSTRACT - Benzodiazepines and analogues (BDZ) are anxiolytics (also known as sedatives) and hypnotics commonly used world-wide. The use of BZD, especially long-term, can result in adverse effects and represents a complex problem for some healthcare systems.
This systematic review aims to identify strategies aiming at the promotion of the rational use of benzodiazepines and analogues across Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries from 2000 to 2020. We included randomized controlled trials (RCT), quasi-experimental studies, and non-randomized studies: cohort, case-control, cross-sectional, case series and reports. Government and conference reports on regulatory, administrative and educational strategies and interventions aiming at the rational use of benzodiazepines and targeted to consumers, healthcare professionals, healthcare organizations and healthcare systems were also included. A relevant literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science® (Web of Knowledge), DANS (Open Grey®), OECD iLibrary and GoogleSchoolar. Two reviewers performed duplicate and independent study selection, data extraction and assessment of the risk of bias. A total of 6,308 records were identified and screened in our search, from which twenty-eight studies were included. Professionals are the preferred target of different interventions. Interventions classified, exclusively or not, as administrative were reported the most in the studies included. Most interventions have demonstrated moderate to large improvements in the prescription, dispensing or utilization of benzodiazepines and analogues.
Heterogeneity regarding the design, delivery, description and report of the strategies and interventions posed a challenge during this review and analysis.
Because strategies and interventions on the rational use of medicines have uncertain effects proper methodological and evidenced-based approaches should be considered in the design, description, implementation and evaluation of these interventions
TechFrame's internationalization plan: Next stop UK
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThe work developed consists on an internationalization strategic plan of measures and
recommendations that aim to support TechFrame’s entrance in the British market. TechFrame is a
Portuguese SME company that develops and commercializes IT products. Currently Darwin is its only
product and consists of a software that supports the management of Industrial Property Rights (IPRs) 1 -
patents, trademarks and designs -. The growing importance of IPRs derives from the high intrinsic value
to their owners. Their management must comply with rigorous formal legal procedures, processes and
requirements. The loss or the mistaken management of IPRs can severely damage the owning
company’s business and operation, since they represent important company’s assets.
Following the achievement of a dominant position in the Portuguese market, with nearly 70% of
market share (in terms of Official IP Agent offices), TechFrame started a committed internationalization
process through key European markets, after having expanded its product to non-key markets namely
Angola, Mozambique, Macau and Austria. The first step was the opening of a local office in the Spanish
market (in 2008) - having nowadays around 5% of market share with 80 licenses sold -. TechFrame
currently desires to enter the French, Italian and British markets. One can say that TechFrame’s
“corporate strategy should not be a once-and-for-all choice but a vision that can evolve”2 (Porter, 1998).
The British market is a key IP (Industrial Property) market in Europe, with a big dimension not only
in terms of IP registered but also in terms of agents operating in this industry and supporting industries. In
this market Darwin will face a strong competition in a developed market with many international IT
(Information Technology) suppliers of IP management solutions.
The strategic plan I have developed aims to effectively contribute to TechFrame, consisting on a
relevant and credible tool able to support TechFrame’s internationalization planning and decision
making
Constraints on Dematerialisation and Allocation of Natural Capital along a Sustainable Growth Path
This paper extends the neoclassical growth model with natural capital by introducing two new concepts: allocation of natural capital and materialization. We consider that anthropogenic environmental impact is correlated with the throughput of the economy (materialisation). Materialisation is the material throughput per unit of economic activity. We capture the effect of the reduction of this throughput dematerialisation in the elasticities of materialisation and aggregate environmental impact. In our framework the fraction of natural capital devoted to production does not provide direct environmental services nor does it contribute to ecosystem functioning namely affecting the carrying capacity of natural capital. We analyse an optimal sustainable growth path, in the context of exogenous technological change. Our main conclusion is that the ratio of dematerialisation elasticities must equal the inverse of the share of natural capital in order to assure unbounded economic growth with constant natural capital
Ciclones no oceano Atlântico Norte: clima actual e cenário futuro
The goal of this work is to study the cyclonic activity in a region centered in the North Atlantic basin to the current and future climates. This has been compiled by applying the algorithm of cyclone detection/tracking developed by the University of Melbourne to four different datasets: ERA40 and NCEP I reanalysis (current climate) and two climate models: ECHAM5 and CCSM3 (current and future climate). The current climate spans the period between 1971 and 2000, while for the future climate it’s considered the period between 2071 and 2100. For the future climate the scenario A2 of the fourth IPCC report is considered.
The study is performed for a region centered in the North Atlantic basin in an area covered by those limits: 85W - 15E, 25N - 70N. Climatology and trends are presented for various characteristics of cyclones in these two climates. An comparison between NCEP I and ERA40 reanalysis it’s done as well.
The results for the current climate shows that much of the cyclonic activity is centered in the higher latitudes of the domain. Here we have the maximum intensity, depth, number of systems, and minimum central pressure. An increased intensity of cyclones could be observed along the Peninsula Scandinavia and northern of Canada by the increase of the mean laplacian of pressure about 0.006 and 0.004 ⁰ hPa lat -2 yr-1 respectively.
Although the high degree of agreement found between the NCEP I and ERA40 reanalysis, it was found that the NCEP I tend to produce more systems in the higher latitudes and less in lower latitudes during the winter. The systems produced by the NCEP I reanalysis tend also to be larger and less intense.
The ECHAM5 and CCSM3 models were capable of reproducing the climatology of the period 1971-2000, allowing its use to study a future climate. However, no substantial changes were found in the cyclonic activity of the future climate, by comparing with present climate. Nevertheless a slight reduction in the intensity of cyclones, accompanied by northward move during the winter in about 3 ⁰ latitude of maximum zonal mean of number of cyclones could be observed
Electrical energy is a key asset of modern societies. However, its supply has been regarded as a public service, of government‘s responsibility, through monopolistic utility companies both public and private. The Iberian Market of Electricity (MIBEL) has arisenwith the objective of integrating the Iberian electricity sector, where market participants
can negotiate mutually beneficial agreements. Specifically, participants can submit production and consumption bids to a stock market (Pool) or negotiate agreements on delivery and receipt of power (bilateral contracts).
At present, an analysis of most electricity markets (EMs) yields the observation that they are still far from deregulated. In particular, tariffs do not reflect the pressure of competition. Multi-agent systems represent a relatively new and rapidly expanding area of research and development. A multi-agent approach in which software agents are capable of flexible action to meet their design objectives is an ideal fit to the naturally distributed domain of a deregulated energy market. Accordingly, this project addresses the challenge of using software agents to help manage the complexity of EMs.
In the past years, a number of multi-agent energy management tools have emerged.
However, despite the power and elegance of existing EM simulators, they often lack generality and flexibility, mainly because they are limited to particular market models, specific types of market participants, and particular features of market players.
The thesis describes the design and implementation of a simplified EM simulator for negotiating the terms of bilateral contracts, placing emphasis on negotiation strategies.
Additionally, it describes a case study aiming at evaluating the different strategies and the EM simulator generally. The experimental results showed that the best strategies for both agents are the following: i) retailer fixed concession strategy, and ii) consumer strategy based on energy volume
Internal Structure of Hybrid Airships Airship Design and Structural Analyses
Nowadays, the research on airships has been declining over the years but the evolution of technology allows the possibility to think in new concepts such as hybrid airship. It provides better efficiency in all aspects, and it is possible to use innovative and effective internal structures with new materials that did not exist in older times.
The internal structure depends on the type of the airship, and many of them have problems due to weight or control and stability. The rigid airships are heavy but with the new technology can have material much lighter and durable. The internal structure is similar to the internal structures of wings, having frames and girders.
To know which kind of structure to use, it were studied various types of possible structure for a hybrid airship prototype and the most effective currently are trusses, despite there are possibilities to start to use sandwich structures in a possible future. The trusses have problems and because of that were analyzed different heights and angles taking into account the study from trusses used in other airships. Experimental tests were realized to prove the concept of the structure as well as the stiffness of the structure.
In order to make a better study about airships and all their structural problems, it was made 4 prototypes and the start of the study of the hybrid airship internal structure. The Prototypes 1 and 1.5 are quite similar in some structure aspects where it was identified the structural problems as well as the influences of material stiffness and difficulties to fix the material to non-rigid airship. The Prototype 2 and 2.5 was analyzed some problems because the force created by the rotor wherein the internal structure will be subject to high moments in areas where it is placed the rotors and wings. The study of the internal structure is the start of the construction of the final prototype with rigid internal structure which will include the control and stability system of the prototype 1.5 and 2.5, called Prototype 3. This study will allow knowing the weakest points and the difficulty to assemble the internal structure of the Prototype 3.
It concludes that it is possible to make an internal structure with the aerodynamic shape desired having a high rigidity and low weight.
Tackling the impact of noise in the productivity of collaborative software development projects located in open spaces
In a context of open space office environments, with multiple teams in the same office
room working on different projects, a commonly reported issue is the disruptive amount
of noise generated by the occupants. High noise levels are mainly attributed to communication
necessities both among members of the same team and among members of
different teams.
Despite the fact that coexistence rules can be established among occupants, with time,
the communication needs and stress levels lead to the disrespect of the agreed rules and
the increase of the room’s noise level. Frequently a third party needs to be put in place
to help enforcing acceptable noise level, e.g. a librarian or a teacher. To ensure the best
work conditions for all office occupants, as well as keeping their productivity high, the
noise level should be as low as possible while still allowing communication.
To control the noise level inside an office, we propose the implementation of a Cyber-
Physical System that utilises the Internet of Things technologies to detect the team(s)
responsible for producing disruptively-high noise levels. By enriching the office’s physical
environment with sensors and the use of sound source location techniques, we can
identify the workspace(s) from which the noise was generated, and then reach its occupants
through the system’s actuators. Upon identifying the responsible team, the system
communicates with it through a LED lamp, using a colour and intensity code, informing
them about their noise level.
The goals of this work are to design and implement a Cyber-Physical System to address
the problem of high noise levels in software development office environments, and to
study the behaviour of the workers when prompted by the system actuators about their
high noise level. Through the usage of functionality tests, we can ensure the functionality
of the system and designed simulations and experimental guidelines for enabling future
works to measure its efficiency at keeping the overall noise level low and for assess the
correlation of its efficiency with its occupants’ productivity.
