    Parallel systems and architectural form

    This paper describes the work of students in Unit 6 of the Diploma school at the UEL during 1995-99. The unit in association with the MSc has been investigating parallel systems with the aid of computers in order to explore the idea of emergent form as a way of generating designs. The first part of the paper intention is to clarify motivation and the conceptional stance of the unit. Here we will define the terminology important for the ideas. We will also sketch out to pedagogical as well as architectural aims of the course. The main body of this paper will discuss five student projects representing a variety of parallel systems which are used by the students to tackle set design tasks. The projects covered are: • Sean Macmillan Generating housing as a vernacular infill algorithm taking account and micro environmental concerns • Michel Mesut redensification using Japanese models of space and urbanism • Riko Sibbe Emergent patterns of use from multi mapped urban fields and hill climbing agents • Claudia Schmid Agents with vision deforming & folding surfaces to provide programmatic enclosures • Pablo Miranda Parallel models of spatial organisation – accessibility indices and isovist

    In this study, first-row transition metal-doped calcium oxide materials (Mn, Ni, Cr, Co., and Zn) were synthesized, characterized, and tested for the OCM reaction. Doped carbonate precursors were prepared by a co-precipitation method. The synthesis parameters were optimized to yield materials with a pure calcite phase, which was verified by XRD. EPR measurements on the doped CaO materials indicate a successful substitution of Ca2+ with transition metal ions in the CaO lattice. The materials were tested for their performance in the OCM reaction, where a beneficial effect towards selectivity and activity effect could be observed for Mn, Ni, and Zn-doped samples, where the selectivity of Co- and Cr-doped CaO was strongly reduced. The optimum doping concentration could be identified in the range of 0.04-0.10 atom%, showing the strongest decrease in the apparent activation energy, as well as the maximum increase in selectivity

    Intraseasonal variability near 10°N in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 111 (2006): C05015, doi:10.1029/2005JC002989.New in situ observations from 10°N, 125°W during 1997–1998 show strong intraseasonal variability in meridional velocity and sea surface temperature. The 50- to 100-day oscillations in sea surface height (SSH) have long been recognized as a prominent aspect of oceanic variability in the region of 9–13°N in the eastern Pacific Ocean. We use in situ and satellite data to more fully characterize this variability. The oscillations have zonal wavelengths of 550–1650 km and propagate westward in a manner consistent with the dispersion relation for first baroclinic mode, free Rossby waves in the presence of a mean westward flow. Analysis of 9 years of altimetry data shows that the amplitude of the 50- to 100-day SSH variability at 10°N is largest on 90–115°W, with peak amplitudes occurring around April. Some eddies traveling westward at 10–13°N emanate from near the gulfs of Tehuantepec and Papagayo, but eddies sometimes also appear to intensify well away from the coast while in the North Equatorial Current (NEC). The hypothesis that the intraseasonal variability and its annual cycle are associated with baroclinic instability of the NEC is supported by a spatiotemporal correlation between the amplitude of 50- to 100-day variability and the occurrence of westward zonal flows meeting an approximate necessary condition for baroclinic instability.     cGMP-Dependent Protein Kinase I Is Crucial for Angiogenesis and Postnatal Vasculogenesis

    Background Endothelium-derived nitric oxide plays an important role for the bone marrow microenvironment. Since several important effects of nitric oxide are mediated by cGMP-dependent pathways, we investigated the role of the cGMP downstream effector cGMP-dependent protein kinase I (cGKI) on postnatal neovascularization. Methodology/Principal Findings In a disc neovascularization model, cGKI -/- mice showed an impaired neovascularization as compared to their wild-type (WT) littermates. Infusion of WT, but not cGKI -/- bone marrow progenitors rescued the impaired ingrowth of new vessels in cGKI-deficient mice. Bone marrow progenitors from cGKI -/- mice showed reduced proliferation and survival rates. In addition, we used cGKI alpha leucine zipper mutant (LZM) mice as model for cGKI deficiency. LZM mice harbor a mutation in the cGKI alpha leucine zipper that prevents interaction with downstream signaling molecules. Consistently, LZM mice exhibited reduced numbers of vasculogenic progenitors and impaired neovascularization following hindlimb ischemia compared to WT mice. Conclusions/Significance Our findings demonstrate that the cGMP-cGKI pathway is critical for postnatal neovascularization and establish a new role for cGKI in vasculogenesis, which is mediated by bone marrow-derived progenitors
