Emerging quinolone-resistant Salmonella in the United States.
We conducted a national survey of antimicrobial resistance in human clinical isolates of Salmonella between July 1, 1994, and June 30, 1995. Every tenth nontyphoidal Salmonella isolate received at state public health laboratories in the United States during this period was tested for resistance to 12 antimicrobial agents, including two quinolones, nalidixic acid, and ciprofloxacin. Emerging quinolone resistance was detected; of 4,008 isolates tested, 21 (0.5%) were resistant to nalidixic acid, and one (0.02%) was resistant to ciprofloxacin. Continued surveillance for quinolone-resistant Salmonella is necessary, particularly after the recent approval of a fluoroquinolone for use in animals intended for food in the United States
Porcine associated Salmonella Typhimuirum DT120: use of PFGE and MLVA in a putative outbreak investigation
In November 2006 a cluster of Salmonella Typhimurium DT120 in the North East of England was putatively associated with the consumption of pork. At the same time cases of illness in Denmark were associated with this Salmonella type, and a EU alert was issued to determine the type of S. Typhimurium DT120 identified. Isolates from the UK and Denmark were compared on the basis of antibiogram, Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) and Multi-Locus-Variable number andem repeat Analysis (MLVA or VNTR) to identify the S. Typhimurium DT120 type and results were compared electronically. Isolates from England had the resistance profile ApSSuT (ampicillin, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline), VNTR profile (171-244-316-0-487) and with the distinct PFGE type (STYMXB.0083). Isolates from Denmark were resistant to Ap (ampicillin) only, had the VNTR type (171-270-324-0-490) and a PFGE type distinct from England (STYMXB.0010). It was therefore possible to confirm that the isolates from England and Denmark were not identical. These results have verified the significance of VNTR in outbreak investigations for S. Typhimurium and have demonstrated how new molecular strategies may be used to supplement existing methods such as PFGE to enable the accurate and rapid comparison of isolates from different countries
Generalized Chaplygin gas model, supernovae and cosmic topology
In this work we study to which extent the knowledge of spatial topology may
place constraints on the parameters of the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG)
model for unification of dark energy and dark matter. By using both the
Poincar\'e dodecahedral and binary octahedral spaces as the observable spatial
topologies, we examine the current type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) constraints on
the GCG model parameters. We show that the knowledge of spatial topology does
provide additional constraints on the parameter of the GCG model but does

Topological Lensing in Spherical Spaces
This article gives the construction and complete classification of all
three-dimensional spherical manifolds, and orders them by decreasing volume, in
the context of multiconnected universe models with positive spatial curvature.
It discusses which spherical topologies are likely to be detectable by
crystallographic methods using three-dimensional catalogs of cosmic objects.
The expected form of the pair separation histogram is predicted (including the
location and height of the spikes) and is compared to computer simulations,
showing that this method is stable with respect to observational uncertainties

A Tonnetz Model for pentachords
This article deals with the construction of surfaces that are suitable for
representing pentachords or 5-pitch segments that are in the same class.
It is a generalization of the well known \"Ottingen-Riemann torus for triads of
neo-Riemannian theories. Two pentachords are near if they differ by a
particular set of contextual inversions and the whole contextual group of
inversions produces a Tiling (Tessellation) by pentagons on the surfaces. A
description of the surfaces as coverings of a particular Tiling is given in the

Are the Crystal Structures of Enantiopure and Racemic Mandelic Acids Determined by Kinetics or Thermodynamics?
YesMandelic acids are prototypic chiral molecules where the sensitivity of crystallized forms (enantiopure/racemic compound/polymorphs) to both conditions and substituents provides a new insight into the factors that may allow chiral separation by crystallization. The determination of a significant number of single crystal structures allows the analysis of 13 enantiopure and 30 racemic crystal structures of 21 (F/Cl/Br/CH3/CH3O) substituted mandelic acid derivatives. There are some common phenyl packing motifs between some groups of racemic and enantiopure structures, although they show very different hydrogen-bonding motifs. The computed crystal energy landscape of 3-chloromandelic acid, which has at least two enantiopure and three racemic crystal polymorphs, reveals that there are many more possible structures, some of which are predicted to be thermodynamically more favorable as well as slightly denser than the known forms. Simulations of mandelic acid dimers in isolation, water, and toluene do not differentiate between racemic and enantiopure dimers and also suggest that the phenyl ring interactions play a major role in the crystallization mechanism. The observed crystallization behavior of mandelic acids does not correspond to any simple “crystal engineering rules” as there is a range of thermodynamically feasible structures with no distinction between the enantiopure and racemic forms. Nucleation and crystallization appear to be determined by the kinetics of crystal growth with a statistical bias, but the diversity of the mandelic acid crystallization behavior demonstrates that the factors that influence the kinetics of crystal nucleation and growth are not yet adequately understood.EPSRC, Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences, UCL-MPS Impact Ph.D. Fellowship, EU COST Actio
Design and operation of a Rayleigh Ohnesorge Jetting Extensional Rheometer (ROJER) to study extensional properties of low viscosity polymer solutions
The Rayleigh Ohnesorge Jetting Extensional Rheometer (ROJER) enables measurement of very short relaxation times of low viscosity complex fluids such as those encountered in ink-jet printing and spraying applications. This paper focuses on the design and operation of the ROJER. The performance of two nozzle designs are compared using Newtonian fluids alongside a study using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Subsequently a disposable nozzle is developed that overcomes issues of blockage and cleaning. The operability of this design is subject to a focused study where low viscosity polymer solutions are characterised. The test fluid materials are ethyl hydroxy-ethyl cellulose (EHEC) and poly ethylene oxide (PEO) mixed with water/glycerol solutions. Results obtained by the disposable nozzle are encouraging, paving the way for a more cost-efficient and robust ROJER setup
Spherical Universe topology and the Casimir effect
The mode problem on the factored 3--sphere is applied to field theory
calculations for massless fields of spin 0, 1/2 and 1. The degeneracies on the
factors, including lens spaces, are neatly derived in a geometric fashion.
Vacuum energies are expressed in terms of the polyhedral degrees and equivalent
expressions given using the cyclic decomposition of the covering group. Scalar
functional determinants are calculated and the spectral asymmetry function
