    Ceramic applications in turbine engines

    Get PDF
Development testing activities on the 1900 F-configuration ceramic parts were completed, 2070 F-configuration ceramic component rig and engine testing was initiated, and the conceptual design for the 2265 F-configuration engine was identified. Fabrication of the 2070 F-configuration ceramic parts continued, along with burner rig development testing of the 2070 F-configuration metal combustor in preparation for 1132 C (2070 F) qualification test conditions. Shakedown testing of the hot engine simulator (HES) rig was also completed in preparation for testing of a spin rig-qualified ceramic-bladed rotor assembly at 1132 C (2070 F) test conditions. Concurrently, ceramics from new sources and alternate materials continued to be evaluated, and fabrication of 2070 F-configuration ceramic component from these new sources continued. Cold spin testing of the critical 2070 F-configuration blade continued in the spin test rig to qualify a set of ceramic blades at 117% engine speed for the gasifier turbine rotor. Rig testing of the ceramic-bladed gasifier turbine rotor assembly at 108% engine speed was also performed, which resulted in the failure of one blade. The new three-piece hot seal with the nickel oxide/calcium fluoride wearface composition was qualified in the regenerator rig and introduced to engine operation wiwth marginal success

Cantonese Music Societies of Vancouver: A Social and Historical Survey

    East Coast Project Financing Issues

    Get PDF
In this article, the authors provide a comprehensive review of project financing as a means to fundoilandgasprojects in the Atlantic Canada offshore. Inparticular, the nature and characteristics of project financing are examined, together with a review of some recent East Coast project financings and an analysis of the legal and contractual framework that comes into play. This is followed byan extensive discussion on the structuring of a project financing including a consideration of the risks involved and how those risks may be allocated

Estimating the Impact of Food and Drug Administration Regulation of Cigarette Package Warning Labels and the Potential Added Impact of Plain Packaging: Evidence From Experimental Auctions Among Adult Smokers

Objective: To estimate differences in demand for cigarette packages with different packaging and health warning label formats. Methods: Adult smokers (n=404) in four states participated in experimental auctions. Participants bid on two of four experimental conditions, each involving a different health warning label format but with the same warning message: 1. text on 50% of pack side; 2. text on 50% of the pack front and back; 3. text with a graphic picture on 50% of the pack front and back; and 4. same as previous format, but without brand imagery. Results: Mean bids decreased across conditions (1. 3.52;2.3.52; 2. 3.43; 3. 3.11;4.3.11; 4. 2.93). Bivariate and multivariate random effects models indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in demand for packs with either of the two text only warnings; however, demand was significantly lower for both packs with prominent pictorial warnings, with the lowest demand associated with the plain, unbranded pack. Conclusions: Results suggest that prominent health warnings with graphic pictures will reduce demand for cigarettes. Regulators should not only consider this type of warning label, but also plain packaging policies for tobacco products.experimental auctions, cigarette labels, grotesque images, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Health Economics and Policy, C93,

An Empirical Investigation of the Relationshops Among Math Confidence, Computer Confidence and Computer Self-Efficacy: Implications for Technology Education

    Get PDF
A popular issue in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, computer self-efficacy (CSE) remains an important area of research. Educators, industry leaders, and government officials argue that the United States is falling behind other countries in technology innovation. And, most attribute this situation to ineffective education in the areas of math, science, and technology. The current study provides insight into these issues by linking math confidence, computer confidence, and CSE. Four hypotheses were tested using data gathered from undergraduate business students in a southern university. The results were significant, suggesting that both Math Confidence and Computer Confidence have a significant effect on CSE, both directly and indirectly. This study extends prior research on CSE by examining the link between Math Confidence and CSE and posits that technology educators may be well-served to consider some of the same techniques and methodologies applied in mathematics education to improve CSE in college students

Lee-Wick extension of the two-Higgs doublet model

    Get PDF
The Lee-Wick Standard Model is a highly constrained model which solves the gauge hierarchy problem at the expense of including states with negative norm. It appears to be macroscopically causal and consistent. This model is extended by considering the two-Higgs doublet extension of the Lee-Wick model. Rewriting the Lagrangian using auxiliary fields introduces two additional doublets of Lee-Wick partners. The model is highly constrained, with only one or two additional parameters beyond that of the usual two-Higgs doublet model, and yet there are four doublets. Mass relations are established by diagonalizing the mass matrices and further constraints are established by studying results from B - \u3e tau nu, neutral B-meson mixing, and B - \u3e X-s gamma. The prospects of detecting evidence for this model at the LHC are discussed

Personal Motivators Influencing Law Enforcement Career Applicants

    Get PDF
As a student of sociology and an 18 year police officer, my personal observation has been that there exists a large turnover rate among individuals working within the law enforcement profession. Cost associated with selection and training of law enforcement personnel are high and currently utilized selection procedures appear ineffective in identifying those individuals likely to become "successful" law enforcement officers. Believing motivation, through social science research, can be both identified and measured, this then becomes a potential selection and performance indicator. This study has defined and selected three groups from within the law enforcement community. By various methodological approaches, each group has been surveyed to determine motivators which influenced the career selection by individual group members. This data has then beencompared and analyzed in light of both existing literature and currently utilized law enforcement selection processes. The goals of this effort are straightforward. First, this study addresses a long time professional interest in motivations of law enforcement officers. Second, the work is intended to fulfill partial masters degree requirements at Oklahoma State University. Last, and possibly most important, the project will hopefully identify those personal motivators attracting individuals to the law enforcement profession and suggesting either an instrument or method with which to address concerns within the law enforcement selection process. Data collected for this project was origionally collected in 1991 by the author as a government employee seeking alternative law enforcement selection processes. There has been no outside funding in association with this project other than contributed by the author. Those organizations surveyed are government law enforcement agencies and as such, no attempt has been made to disguise their identity. Individuals surveyed, have not been identified, and every effort has been taken to guard their anonymity.Correction
