Chiral Perturbation Theory in a Nuclear Background
We propose a novel way to formulate Chiral Perturbation Theory in a nuclear
background, characterized by a static, non-uniform distribution of the baryon
number that describes the finite nucleus. In the limiting case of a uniform
distribution, the theory reduces to the well-known zero-temperature in-medium
ChPT. The proposed approach is used to calculate the self-energy of the charged
pion in the background of the heavy nucleus at O(p^5) in the chiral expansion,
and to derive the leading terms of the pion-nucleus optical potential.Comment: 42 pages, Latex, 4 Postscript figure

Derivation of genetic interaction networks from quantitative phenotype data
We have generalized the derivation of genetic-interaction networks from quantitative phenotype data. Familiar and unfamiliar modes of genetic interaction were identified and defined. A network was derived from agar-invasion phenotypes of mutant yeast. Mutations showed specific modes of genetic interaction with specific biological processes. Mutations formed cliques of significant mutual information in their large-scale patterns of genetic interaction. These local and global interaction patterns reflect the effects of gene perturbations on biological processes and pathways
Present and projected future mean radiant temperature for three European cities
Present-day and projected future changes in mean radiant temperature, T mrt in one northern, one mid-, and one southern European city (represented by Gothenburg, Frankfurt, and Porto), are presented, and the concept of hot spots is adopted. Air temperature, T a , increased in all cities by 2100, but changes in solar radiation due to changes in cloudiness counterbalanced or exacerbated the effects on T mrt. The number of days with high T mrt in Gothenburg was relatively unchanged at the end of the century (+1 day), whereas it more than doubled in Frankfurt and tripled in Porto. The use of street trees to reduce daytime radiant heat load was analyzed using hot spots to identify where trees could be most beneficial. Hot spots, although varying in intensity and frequency, were generally confined to near sunlit southeast-southwest facing walls, in northeast corner of courtyards, and in open spaces in all three cities. By adding trees in these spaces, the radiant heat load can be reduced, especially in spaces with no or few trees. A set of design principles for reducing the radiant heat load is outlined based on these findings and existing literature
First Order Kaon Condensation in Neutron Stars: Finite Size Effects in the Mixed Phase
We study the role of Coulomb and surface effects on the phase transition from
dense nuclear matter to a mixed phase of nuclear and kaon-condensed matter. We
calculate corrections to the bulk calculation of the equation of state (EOS)
and the critical density for the transition by solving explicitly for
spherical, cylindrical, and planar structures. The importance of Debye
screening in the determination of the charged particle profiles is studied in
some detail. We find that the surface and Coulomb contributions to the energy
density are small, but that they play an important role in the determination of
the critical pressure for the transition, as well as affecting the size and
geometry of favored structures. This changes the EOS over a wide range of
pressure and consequently increases the maximum mass by about 0.1 solar masses.
Implications for transport properties of the mixed phase are also discussed.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
Population distribution of traditional and the emerging cardiovascular risk factors carotid plaque and IMT: the REFINE-Reykjavik study with comparison with the Tromsø study

Important population differences about atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk factors may thus be missed. We compare the distribution of cardiovascular risk factors, carotids plaque and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in two population-based studies. METHODS: Carotid artery atherosclerotic plaque prevalence and risk factors levels for cardiovascular disease by sex in 5-year age groups from the Risk Evaluation For Infarct Estimates Reykjavik study (REFINE-Reykjavik study) were compared with data from the Tromsø 6 study. RESULTS: The threshold of carotid plaque presence in the Tromsø 6 study fell between minimal and moderate plaque defined in the REFINE-Reykjavik study reflecting carotid plaque prevalence. The prevalence of minimal carotid plaque in the REFINE-Reykjavik study was 47% in men (40-69 years old) and 38% in women and 11% in men and 7% in women of moderate plaque. The prevalence of any plaque in the Tromsø 6 study was 35% in men and 27% in women. The mean (CIMT) was similar in the studies. In the Tromsø 6 study mean systolic blood pressure was 8 mm Hg higher in men and 10 mm Hg higher in women, mean low-density lipoprotein was 0.5 mmol/L higher in men and 0.3 mmol/L higher in women and the prevalence of smoking was 4% higher in men and 9% higher in women. However, body mass index was 0.8 kg/m2 higher in men and 0.9 kg/m2 in women in the REFINE-Reykjavik study. CONCLUSION: Comparison between Iceland and Norway revealed differences in the prevalence of carotid plaque, which was assumed to be due to different definition of plaque. However, clinically significant differences in conventional cardiovascular risk factors were seen. Nonequilibrium Weak Processes in Kaon Condensation II - Kinetics of condensation ---
The kinetics of negatively charged kaon condensation in the early stages of a
newly born neutron star is considered. The thermal kaon process, in which kaons
are thermally produced by nucleon-nucleon collisions, is found to be dominant
throughout the equilibration process. Temporal changes of the order parameter
of the condensate and the number densities of the chemical species are obtained
from the rate equations, which include the thermal kaon reactions as well as
the kaon-induced Urca and the modified Urca reactions. It is shown that the
dynamical evolution of the condensate is characterized by three stages: the
first, prior to establishment of a condensate, the second, during the growth
and subsequent saturation of the condensate, and the third, near chemical
equilibrium. The connection between the existence of a soft kaon mode and the
instability of the noncondensed state is discussed. Implications of the
nonequilibrium process on the possible delayed collapse of a protoneutron star

Validation and calibration of next-generation sequencing to identify Epstein-Barr virus-positive gastric cancer in The Cancer Genome Atlas
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive subtype of gastric adenocarcinoma is conventionally identified by in situ hybridization (ISH) for viral nucleic acids, but next-generation sequencing represents a potential alternative. We therefore determined normalized EBV read counts by whole genome, whole exome, mRNA and miRNA sequencing for 295 fresh-frozen gastric tumor samples. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections were retrieved for ISH confirmation of 13 high-EBV and 11 low-EBV cases. In pairwise comparisons, individual samples were either concordantly high or concordantly low by all genomic methods for which data were available. Empiric cut-offs of sequencing counts identified 26 (9%) tumors as EBV-positive. EBV-positivity or negativity by molecular testing was confirmed by EBER-ISH in all but one tumor evaluated by both approaches (kappa=0.91). EBV-positive gastric tumors may be accurately identified by quantifying viral sequences in genomic data.
