    An Elementary Special Education Program, Community Unit District #3, Georgetown, Illinois

    In February, 1977 Supportive Services (SS) was designed as a special education program for the elementary schools in Community Unit District #3, Georgetown, Illinois. Georgetown has 900 students in grades kindergarten through eight. Three special education teachers developed the supportive services program with input from other district specialists who work with exceptional children. Following study sessions and writing the program, approval was sought from the director of the special education district, the school principal, and the school district superintendent. Upon request of the superintendent, the teachers presented the program to the school board for approval. After approval was received from the board of education, programs and workshops were planned by the special education teachers and the administrators to present the program to classroom teachers and parents to gain their cooperation in the implementation of the SS program. The program is cross-categorical and includes students labeled educable mentally handicapped, learning disabled, and behavioral disordered. Special education students are based in a regular classroom and spend at least 51 percent of the school day in that classroom joining in activities with their peers. The portion of the school day the child spends in the SS classroom is programmed to fit each child\u27s educational plan. The child\u27s work may be either instructional or supportive. Supportive Services utilizes an academic approach to work with the child\u27s perceptual deficiencies. Transitional kindergarten is a part of the SS program as well as a part of the kindergarten program. At the end of the kindergarten year, children, who have not accomplished the academic requirements for the first grade, are provisionally placed in special education for one year on the basis of minimal testing. This appraisal is based on pre and post testing of the kindergartners. These students attend school a full day, half of the day is spent in repeating kindergarten and half the day is spent in SS. Special education remediation techniques are utilized with perceptual and academic deficiencies. At the end of the year all transitional kindergarten children return to the first grade classroom. If serious special education problems are suspected, the child is referred for full psychological evaluation and a placement conference. Opinion surveys of the regular classroom teachers were made in 1978 and 1981. The teachers had positive attitudes toward the social and academic progress that the special education students had made. They approved of the increased cooperation between special education teachers and classroom teachers. Some teachers noted that problems existed in grading and scheduling. In general, the teachers and administrators feel that the positive aspects of the SS program help to better serve the needs of the students

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: At present, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) criteria used to assess whether a population qualifies for inclusion in the CITES Appendices relate to (A) size of the population, (B) area of distribution of the population, and (C) declines in the size of the population. Numeric guidelines are provided as indicators of a small population (less than 5,000 individuals), a small subpopulation (less than 500 individuals), a restricted area of distribution for a population (less than 10,000 km2), a restricted area of distribution for a subpopula-tion (less than 500 km2), a high rate of decline (a decrease of 50% or more in total within 5 years or two generations whichever is longer or, for a small wild population, a decline of 20% or more in total within ten years or three generations whichever is longer), large fluctuations (population size or area of distribution varies widely, rapidly and frequently, with a variation greater than one order of magnitude), and a short-term fluctuation (one of two years or less). The Working Group discussed several broad issues of relevance to the CITES criteria and guidelines. These included the importance of the historical extent of decline versus the recent rate of decline; the utility and validity of incorporating relative population productivity into decline criteria; the utility of absolute numbers for defining small populations or small areas; the appropriateness of generation times as time frames for examining declines; the importance of the magnitude and frequency of fluctuations as factors affecting risk of extinction; and the overall utility of numeric thresh-olds or guidelines

    Persist in place or shift in space? Evaluating the adaptive capacity of species to climate change

    Assessing the vulnerability of species to climate change serves as the basis for climate-adaptation planning and climate-smart conservation, and typically involves an evaluation of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity (AC). AC is a species’ ability to cope with or adjust to changing climatic conditions, and is the least understood and most inconsistently applied of these three factors. We propose an attribute-based framework for evaluating the AC of species, identifying two general classes of adaptive responses: “persist in place” and “shift in space”. Persist-in-place attributes enable species to survive in situ, whereas the shift-in-space response emphasizes attributes that facilitate tracking of suitable bioclimatic conditions. We provide guidance for assessing AC attributes and demonstrate the framework's application for species with disparate life histories. Results illustrate the broad utility of this generalized framework for informing adaptation planning and guiding species conservation in a rapidly changing climate.publishedVersio

    Economic and other barriers to adopting recommendations to prevent childhood obesity: results of a focus group study with parents

    Abstract Background Parents are integral to the implementation of obesity prevention and management recommendations for children. Exploration of barriers to and facilitators of parental decisions to adopt obesity prevention recommendations will inform future efforts to reduce childhood obesity. Methods We conducted 4 focus groups (2 English, 2 Spanish) among a total of 19 parents of overweight (BMI ≥ 85th percentile) children aged 5-17 years. The main discussion focused on 7 common obesity prevention recommendations: reducing television (TV) watching, removing TV from child's bedroom, increasing physically active games, participating in community or school-based athletics, walking to school, walking more in general, and eating less fast food. Parents were asked to discuss what factors would make each recommendation more difficult (barriers) or easier (facilitators) to follow. Participants were also asked about the relative importance of economic (time and dollar costs/savings) barriers and facilitators if these were not brought into the discussion unprompted. Results Parents identified many barriers but few facilitators to adopting obesity prevention recommendations for their children. Members of all groups identified economic barriers (time and dollar costs) among a variety of pertinent barriers, although the discussion of dollar costs often required prompting. Parents cited other barriers including child preference, difficulty with changing habits, lack of information, lack of transportation, difficulty with monitoring child behavior, need for assistance from family members, parity with other family members, and neighborhood walking safety. Facilitators identified included access to physical activity programs, availability of alternatives to fast food and TV which are acceptable to the child, enlisting outside support, dietary information, involving the child, setting limits, making behavior changes gradually, and parental change in shopping behaviors and own eating behaviors. Conclusions Parents identify numerous barriers to adopting obesity prevention recommendations, most notably child and family preferences and resistance to change, but also economic barriers.     Tumor associated gene-1/L amino acid transporter-1 (TA1/LAT-1) was recently identified as a light chain of the CD98 amino acid transporter and cellular activation marker. Our previous studies with primary rat hepatocyte cultures demonstrated that TA1 RNA levels were responsive to media amino acid concentrations, suggesting adaptive regulation. High level TA1 expression associated with transformed cells also suggested a role in tumor progression. The present study examined the relationship of TA1/CD98 expression, adaptive response, and associated amino acid transport to neoplastic transformation using a panel of well characterized rat hepatic cell lines. We found 1) increased expression of TA1 in response to amino acid depletion, specific for arginine but not glutamine; 2) loss of TA1 response to arginine in gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-positive transformed and tumorigenic cells; 3) no appreciable response of 4F2/CD98 heavy chain to arginine levels; and 4) correlation of system L amino acid transport activity in response to arginine with changes in TA1/LAT-1 mRNA but not total immunoreacting protein. Our results suggest this CD98 light chain may act as an environmental sensor, responding to amino acid availability and that its regulation is complex. We hypothesize that altered TA1 expression is an early event in hepatocarcinogenesis giving neoplastic cells a growth or survival advantage, particularly under conditions of limited amino acid availability

    Identification of PKD1L1 Gene Variants in Children with the Biliary Atresia Splenic Malformation Syndrome

    Biliary atresia (BA) is the most common cause of end‐stage liver disease in children and the primary indication for pediatric liver transplantation, yet underlying etiologies remain unknown. Approximately 10% of infants affected by BA exhibit various laterality defects (heterotaxy) including splenic abnormalities and complex cardiac malformations — a distinctive subgroup commonly referred to as the biliary atresia splenic malformation (BASM) syndrome. We hypothesized that genetic factors linking laterality features with the etiopathogenesis of BA in BASM patients could be identified through whole exome sequencing (WES) of an affected cohort. DNA specimens from 67 BASM subjects, including 58 patient‐parent trios, from the NIDDK‐supported Childhood Liver Disease Research Network (ChiLDReN) underwent WES. Candidate gene variants derived from a pre‐specified set of 2,016 genes associated with ciliary dysgenesis and/or dysfunction or cholestasis were prioritized according to pathogenicity, population frequency, and mode of inheritance. Five BASM subjects harbored rare and potentially deleterious bi‐allelic variants in polycystin 1‐like 1, PKD1L1, a gene associated with ciliary calcium signaling and embryonic laterality determination in fish, mice and humans. Heterozygous PKD1L1 variants were found in 3 additional subjects. Immunohistochemical analysis of liver from the one BASM subject available revealed decreased PKD1L1 expression in bile duct epithelium when compared to normal livers and livers affected by other non‐cholestatic diseases. Conclusion WES identified bi‐allelic and heterozygous PKD1L1 variants of interest in 8 BASM subjects from the ChiLDReN dataset. The dual roles for PKD1L1 in laterality determination and ciliary function suggest that PKD1L1 is a new, biologically plausible, cholangiocyte‐expressed candidate gene for the BASM syndrome

    'A habitual disposition to the good': on reason, virtue and realism

    Amidst the crisis of instrumental reason, a number of contemporary political philosophers including JĂŒrgen Habermas have sought to rescue the project of a reasonable humanism from the twin threats of religious fundamentalism and secular naturalism. In his recent work, Habermas defends a post-metaphysical politics that aims to protect rationality against encroachment while also accommodating religious faith within the public sphere. This paper contends that Habermas’ post-metaphysical project fails to provide a robust alternative either to the double challenge of secular naturalism and religious fundamentalism or to the ruthless instrumentalism that underpins capitalism. By contrast with Habermas and also with the ‘new realism’ of contemporary political philosophers such as Raymond Geuss or Bernard Williams, realism in the tradition of Plato and Aristotle can defend reason against instrumental rationality and blind belief by integrating it with habit, feeling and even faith. Such metaphysical–political realism can help develop a politics of virtue that goes beyond communitarian thinking by emphasising plural modes of association (not merely ‘community’), substantive ties of sympathy and the importance of pursuing goodness and mutual flourishing
