Social Class and Concern for Climate Change in UNH College Students

    Get PDF
This study explores the relationship between college students’ social class and level of concern for climate change. A survey was administered to 355 students at the University of New Hampshire, in the Fall of 2015. Using this data, this paper examines social class, as measured by parental college degree status, in relation to concern for climate change. The results show no statistically significant relationship between the independent and dependent variables for the entire sample, but a statically significant relationship among female respondents who were very concerned about climate change. Specifically, of women whose parents have a college degree, 37% responded with very concerned, only 18% of women whose parents do not have a college degree responded with very concerned. Further research with more in-depth measures of social class and with larger and more representative samples is recommended

Viscose Rayon: An Absorbing Problem. An Investigation into the Impact Conservation Wet Cleaning Treatments have on Historic Woven Viscose Rayon Fabrics; with a Supplementary Analysis of Current Techniques for Identifying Man-Made Fibres

    Get PDF
Viscose rayon has been in production for over a century, however, minimal literature is available on its conservation. Pre-1940s viscose rayon has poorer wet strength than later versions. The fiber’s manufacture has influence on its wet strength and progressive improvements to processing methods have improved this characteristic. The implications for conservation wet cleaning treatments on examples from different eras were investigated. Tensile strength testing was conducted on three sets of specimens from different times – c.1940s, c.1960s and c.1980/90s – each subjected to a controlled wet cleaning treatment. Results showed the two later viscose rayons lost significant strength in the wet state, up to 50%. The c.1940s fabric had a greater strength reduction of around 80% - however, degradation from a black colorant present affected the results. This highlighted the risk that degradation, even when not visible macroscopically, can become significantly exacerbated in wetted viscose rayon. Further tensile tests on specimens subjected to wet cleaning and then air dried showed a return of strength upon drying, suggesting that no apparent immediate permanent impact was had on fibers. This research has shown it can be suitable to wet clean viscose rayon, although such treatment may be less appropriate for older more degraded versions

Social justice is the best therapy:exploring lived-experiences of welfare reform in the United Kingdom

    Get PDF
This thesis consists of a literature review, a research paper and a critical appraisal. The focus of this thesis is to understand the impact of welfare reform and austerity on individuals, with particular focus on mental wellbeing. In attempt to explore the impact of stigma on individuals who claim benefits a qualitative metasynthesis of 18 papers was completed. Findings demonstrated that individuals experienced multiple levels of benefit stigma, that stigma had social and emotional impact, individuals adopted various strategies to manage their stigmatised identity and that benefits stigma created an atmosphere of distrust and suspicion within communities. The research paper specifically explored the impact of applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) on mental wellbeing. PIP is a form of disability benefit introduced under the Welfare Reform Act. Thematic analysis of qualitative data yielded from 16 interviews led to the development of six related themes: 1) PIP is ‘gruelling’ throughout: designed to frustrate?; 2) ‘Treated like a criminal’ - a dehumanising, criminalising process; 3) ‘It’s life threatening for some people’ - impact of PIP on mental health; 4) ‘It feels like they’re trying to cull the weak’- lacking a sense of belonging and worth in society; 5) ‘They need to make improvements’ –how PIP could be improved. These findings captured the distressing nature of the PIP process. Finally, the critical appraisal provides a reflective stance on a central issue underlying many of the recommendations made within the literature review and empirical paper- the role of Clinical Psychology in politics and social justice. It is argued that psychological thinking can offer unique insight into some of the most pressing issues society faces. Therefore we have a responsibility to contribute our research findings and our theoretical understandings to public, social and political debates

Bribery and Controversy in the US and Global Market

    Get PDF
Throughout the history of trade and business, there have always been alternative—and often unethical—ways of closing sales in the form of extra kick-backs and luxurious goods. In modern times these unethical incentives are referred to as bribes. More recently, the practice of bribery has been linked to high-profile corruption and fraud cases in the United States, rocking the international marketplace for companies such as Pfizer, Avon, Johnson & Johnson, and Daimler AG. However, many international companies actually welcome bribery as a way to compete with other companies in the global marketplace. When looking at bribery and its effect on the global market, it is important to discuss the ways in which businesses actually practice bribery, the ethical issues behind it, how it is used in the global market, the effects of United States’ laws enacted to prevent it, as well as the controversy behind the practice of bribery in general

Positive aspects of voice-hearing:a qualitative metasynthesis

    Get PDF
Voice-hearing occurs in clinical and non-clinical samples, and the role of spiritual and cultural frameworks of understanding for percipients has received increased attention. This review aimed to identify and synthesise the existing qualitative literature relating to positive aspects of voice-hearing experiences, and to make recommendations based on these findings for clinical practice and future research. Qualitative papers that included positive aspects of voice-hearing were identified by undertaking a systematic search of six electronic databases, resulting in 22 papers. The quality of each paper was assessed and the meta-ethnographic approach was used to extract and synthesise the data. Six themes were identified relating to voices providing safety and protection, guidance, creating psychological and emotional well-being, providing companionship, facilitating personal growth and development, and connecting hearers to religious or spiritual belief systems. The findings suggest positive aspects of voice-hearing that may have clinical and research implications

(304.6)The digital Cuny Archive was made available in part through funding assistance from USAID.The following report is a detailed discussion of the OXFAM/World Neighbors housing reconstruction program in Guatemala which began immediately following the earthquakes of February, 1976. This interim evaluation of the OXFAM/World Neighbors housing program was made at the request of Fred Cuny, INTERTECT, a technical consultant to the program. The purpose was multi-faceted. In general terms, it sought to describe the impact of the program on the reconstruction of housing in the disaster- affected area; to determine the effectiveness of educational materials produced by the program; to document the accomplishments, difficulties and deficiencies of the program at this point in time; and to make recommendations for improvements in its current operations and for next year's program.INTERTECT

Caring for People with Mental Health Problems Who Present at the Emergency Department: a Nurse Educator's Journey

    Get PDF
The New Zealand Emergency Department (ED) nurse is faced daily with the challenge of caring for patients of all ages with a wide variety of presenting complaints. Courses are available for ED specialty work such as trauma and paediatric assessment. However, as this thesis argues, it is difficult to access updated and ongoing education in relation to caring for people with mental health problems who present to the Emergency Department. In addition to this education deficit are the challenges of providing care in an overcrowded ED environment. Such factors contribute to a perceived lack of confidence and sometimes ambivalence or frustration on the part of nursing staff in caring for this group. This may result in an inconsistent standard of care for the the person with a mental health problem unless such issues are addressed. The aim of this research paper was to explore the education needs of ED nurses when caring for people with mental health problems. A literature review was undertaken to investigate the broad education strategies available to overcome these challenges. Diverse approaches were identified such as workshops, clinical guidelines, and mental health consultation-liaison roles. Research was also identified that examined ED nursing attitudes and their learning needs in relation to mental health. This paper concludes with a discussion of recommendations for the New Zealand setting with the intention of developing a more confident and competent nursing workforce, who are better prepared to care for the person with a mental health problem
