    The Revised Emotional Intelligence Scale: Cross Cultural Validation in a Turkish Psychiatric Outpatient Cohort

    The original Emotional Intelligence Scale of Fukunishi utilized 65 items, measuring three basic dimensions: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal and Situational. Subsequently, using a sample of 170 U.S.psychiatric outpatients, it was factor reduced from 65 to 34 items that showed excellent internal consistency both overall and for two of its three hypothesized factors. This study examined the internal consistency of the 34-item solution in a cohort of 123 Turkish psychiatric outpatients. The mean age of the sample was 34.5 years (SD=11.2). The internal consistency of the total scale was 0.91. Scores also were high for the Interpersonal dimension (0.90) and the Intrapersonal dimension (.0.84), but not for the Situational dimension (0.67). A similar lower scoring pattern for the Si- tuational dimension has been seen both in US and Japanese outpatient populations. These data suggest that, in a Turkish psychiatric outpatient population, this scale also appears to maintain excellent internal consistency both overall and for two of its three hypothesized factors. This inventory may be suitable to investigate suitability for psychological treatment

    This paper considers the faunal remains from recent excavations at the Royal London Hospital. The remains date to the beginning of the 19th century and offer an insight into the life of the hospital's patients and practices of the attached medical school. Many of the animal remains consist of partially dissected skeletons, including the unique finds of Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) and Cercopithecus monkey. The hospital diet and developments in comparative anatomy are discussed by integrating the results with documentary research. They show that zooarchaeological study of later post-medieval material can significantly enhance our understanding of the exploitation of animals in this perio

    Excited Heavy Mesons Beyond Leading Order in the Heavy Quark Expansion

    We examine the decays of excited heavy mesons, including the leading power corrections to the heavy quark limit. We find a new and natural explanation for the large deviation of the width of the D1(2420)D_1(2420) from the heavy quark symmetry prediction. Our formalism leads to detailed predictions for the properties of the excited bottom mesons, some of which recently have been observed. Finally, we present a detailed analysis of the effect of power corrections and finite meson widths on the angular distributions which may be measured in heavy meson decays.Comment: Uses REVTeX, 19 pages, 6 EPS figures embedded with epsf.st

    Multibaryons with heavy flavors in the Skyrme model

    We investigate the possible existence of multibaryons with heavy flavor quantum numbers using the bound state approach to the topological soliton model and the recently proposed approximation for multiskyrmion fields based on rational maps. We use an effective interaction lagrangian which consistently incorporates both chiral symmetry and the heavy quark symmetry including the corrections up to order 1/m_Q.     Chiral extrapolation of lattice data for the hyperfine splittings of heavy mesons

    Hyperfine splittings between the heavy vector (D*, B*) and pseudoscalar (D, B) mesons have been calculated numerically in lattice QCD, where the pion mass (which is related to the light quark mass) is much larger than its physical value. Naive linear chiral extrapolations of the lattice data to the physical mass of the pion lead to hyperfine splittings which are smaller than experimental data. In order to extrapolate these lattice data to the physical mass of the pion more reasonably, we apply the effective chiral perturbation theory for heavy mesons, which is invariant under chiral symmetry when the light quark masses go to zero and heavy quark symmetry when the heavy quark masses go to infinity. This leads to a phenomenological functional form with three parameters to extrapolate the lattice data. It is found that the extrapolated hyperfine splittings are even smaller than those obtained using linear extrapolation. We conclude that the source of the discrepancy between lattice data for hyperfine splittings and experiment must lie in non-chiral physics.Comment: 27 pages, 6 figure

    Investigating the Role of Hypothalamic Tumor Involvement in Sleep and Cognitive Outcomes Among Children Treated for Craniopharyngioma

    Objective: Despite excellent survival prognosis, children treated for craniopharyngioma experience significant morbidity. We examined the role of hypothalamic involvement (HI) in excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and attention regulation in children enrolled on a Phase II trial of limited surgery and proton therapy. Methods: Participants completed a sleep evaluation (N = 62) and a continuous performance test (CPT) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI; n = 29) prior to proton therapy. Results: EDS was identified in 76% of the patients and was significantly related to increased HI extent (p = .04). There was no relationship between CPT performance during fMRI and HI or EDS. Visual examination of group composite fMRI images revealed greater spatial extent of activation in frontal cortical regions in patients with EDS, consistent with a compensatory activation hypothesis. Conclusion: Routine screening for sleep problems during therapy is indicated for children with craniopharyngioma, to optimize the timing of interventions and reduce long-term morbidity

    Extremely red galaxies: dust attenuation and classification

    We re-address the classification criterion for extremely red galaxies (ERGs) of Pozzetti and Mannucci (2000 -- PM00), which aims to separate, in the Ic-K (or Rc-K) vs. J-K colour--colour diagram, passively evolving, old (> 1 Gyr) stellar populations in a dust-free environment, associated with ellipticals (Es), from dusty starburst galaxies (DSGs), both at 1 < z < 2. We explore a category of objects not considered previously, i.e., galaxies forming in this redshift range on short (0.1 Gyr) timescales and observed also in their early, dusty post-starburst phase. We also investigate the impact of structure of the dusty medium and dust amount on the observed optical/near-IR colours of high-z DSGs/DPSGs, through multiple-scattering radiative transfer calculations for a dust/stars configuration and an extinction function calibrated with nearby dusty starbursts. As a main result, we find that dusty post-starburst galaxies (DPSGs), with ages between 0.2 and 1 Gyr, at 1.3 < z < 2 mix with Es at 1 < z < 2 for a large range in dust amount. This ``intrusion'' is a source of concern for the present two-colour classification of ERGs. On the other hand, we confirm, in agreement with PM00, that DSGs are well separated from Es, both at 1 < z < 2, in the Ic-K vs. J-K colour--colour diagram, whatever the structure (two-phase clumpy or homogeneous) of their dusty medium and their dust amount are. This result holds under the new hypothesis of high-z Es being as dusty as nearby ones. Thus the interpretation of the optical/near-IR colours of high-z Es may suffer from a multiple degeneracy among age, metallicity, dust and redshift. We also find that DPSGs at z around 1 mix with DSGs at 1 < z < 2, as a function of dust amount and structure of the dusty medium.
