    Poetry Audio/Video Library Phase 2

    Get PDF
The University of Arizona Poetry Center currently provides patrons access to its unparalleled collection of poetry recordings-thousands of hours of audio and video material dating from the 1960s forward-using a proprietary database and storage system. When this application-the Audio/Video Library (AVL)-was begun in 2006, its first phase involved basic data entry and a desktop-only interface. Its second phase, beginning in March 2010, will add a Web 2.0 component to make the entire collection available to the general public. This Level II grant would fund this phase, which has three goals: 1)Develop a web-accessible interface, giving scholars, students, and the public direct on-line access to the collection from anywhere in the world; 2)Enhance the application's search tools so to increase the collections's value to scholars; 3)Develop a user-comment module to allow poets, scholars Poetry Center staff, and the public to share and store their knowledge about the collection's contents

Oral tradition in the context of verbal art

    Get PDF
The oral tradition is a field defined by what it is not--it is oral, not written. But the barrier between the two remains rather fluid and artificial. Certainly, there are contexts in which writing is excluded for historical or cultural reasons. But the examples of written influence on oral traditions and vice versa have led me to emphasize the larger picture of verbal art rather than focus entirely on the oral tradition. Not

From the griot of Roots to the roots of griot : a new look at the origins of a controversial African term for bard

    Get PDF
The spread of the word griot during the last two decades from its role as a regional descriptor for a certain kind of West African bard to global usage in an extraordinary range of media is the result of many factors. The 1976 Roots phenomenon introduced 1.5 million readers and 130 million viewers to the image of the griot (Pace 1992, Anonymous 1977). Today, griots perform at a variety of venues in cities such as Paris, London, New York, and Tokyo, as well as at hundreds of universities around the world. They are now having an impact on such diverse musical styles as rock, rap, and even modern symphonic music. Not

Species Identification of the Stylohyoid Bone for North American Artiodactyls

    Get PDF
Zooarchaeologists cannot identify mammal species by their stylohyoid bones. Current trends in zooarchaeological research stress the need for rigorous and accessible identification methodology. I examined the stylohyoids of 15 hooved mammals: cattle, bison, domestic sheep, bighorn sheep, Dall sheep, mountain goat, domestic goat, elk, caribou, white-tailed deer, mule deer, moose, pronghorn antelope, domestic pig, and horse. Objectives included documenting how to side the stylohyoid (left or right), and producing species identification criteria based on large samples. A total of 325 samples were measured from eight repositories. Written descriptions, photographs, and success ratios for metrics and distinct traits are included for each species. Results indicate that stylohyoids can be sided based on longitudinal curvature, and that broad categories such as large vs. small ungulates, medium categories such as family and genus, and several species can be identified with more than 90% probability using combinations of measurements and ratios

    Administrator\u27s View of Doctor-Lawyer-Hospital Relations

    Get PDF
In the September 1959 issue of the Cleveland-Marshall Law Reivew, Mr. Howard Oleck, Assistant Dean and Professor of Law of the School, has written an article discussing the legal relationships of physician, lawyer, and hospital administrator. While he addresses himself primarily to the legal relationships between these three groups, his article also concerns itself to some extent with the professional and administrative relationships involved. The article then goes on to discuss the case of Morwin v. Albany Hospital, and certain conclusions are drawn from the author\u27s interpretation of this case which he applies to the triangle of doctor, lawyer, and hospital administrator. I believe that Mr. Oleck has presented a misleading viewpoint of both the legal and professional relationships which exist between physician and hospital

Flow unit prediction with limited permeability data using artificial neural network analysis

The Appalachian Basin has numerous abandoned or marginally producing oilfields having significant recoverable oil remaining in place. Typically production records and reservoir data is not available. Presented is a new methodology, applicable to any field having limited records, designed for reservoir characterization via flow unit identification.;This methodology utilizes limited core permeability data from a few wells as a key to predicting flow units within a field when only log-based data is available. Primary software tools used include NeuroShell 2, an artificial neural network (ANN) program, and the Boast98 numerical simulator.;Various techniques for flow unit identification including graphic approaches using the permeability-porosity relationship within a given flow unit and ANN (Kohonen) analysis are utilized as a part of the methodology developed. The core data and flow units are utilized in neural network models designed to predict flow units and permeability field-wide using only electric well logs. Field wide prediction of flow units and permeability are products of the study.;The study field selected was the Jacksonburg-Stringtown field. The producing horizon is the Upper Devonian Gordon sandstone. Discovered in 1895, waterflood operations were commenced in 1981. The characterization study utilizes core data and electric logs (gamma ray-density) from six core wells for flow unit identification.;Two dual five spots were selected in the field for verification of this new methodology. Reservoir simulation analysis utilizing the predicted flow units and permeability was completed for comparison to actual production records. A close match was achieved. As another comparison step a single layer simulation model for the two patterns was generated. The single layer model included the same inputs as the flow unit model except for thickness and average permeability. The simulation model utilizing flow units was a far more accurate prediction method

Control of unstable steady states by extended time-delayed feedback

Time-delayed feedback methods can be used to control unstable periodic orbits as well as unstable steady states. We present an application of extended time delay autosynchronization introduced by Socolar et al. to an unstable focus. This system represents a generic model of an unstable steady state which can be found for instance in a Hopf bifurcation. In addition to the original controller design, we investigate effects of control loop latency and a bandpass filter on the domain of control. Furthermore, we consider coupling of the control force to the system via a rotational coupling matrix parametrized by a variable phase. We present an analysis of the domain of control and support our results by numerical calculations.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figure
