Shifting attention in viewer- and object-based reference frames after unilateral brain injury
The aims of the present study were to investigate the respective roles that object- and viewer-based reference frames play in reorienting visual attention, and to assess their influence after unilateral brain injury. To do so, we studied 16 right hemisphere injured (RHI) and 13 left hemisphere injured (LHI) patients. We used a cueing design that manipulates the location of cues and targets relative to a display comprised of two rectangles (i.e., objects). Unlike previous studies with patients, we presented all cues at midline rather than in the left or right visual fields. Thus, in the critical conditions in which targets were presented laterally, reorienting of attention was always from a midline cue. Performance was measured for lateralized target detection as a function of viewer-based (contra- and ipsilesional sides) and object-based (requiring reorienting within or between objects) reference frames. As expected, contralesional detection was slower than ipsilesional detection for the patients. More importantly, objects influenced target detection differently in the contralesional and ipsilesional fields. Contralesionally, reorienting to a target within the cued object took longer than reorienting to a target in the same location but in the uncued object. This finding is consistent with object-based neglect. Ipsilesionally, the means were in the opposite direction. Furthermore, no significant difference was found in object-based influences between the patient groups (RHI vs. LHI). These findings are discussed in the context of reference frames used in reorienting attention for target detection
High redshift AGNs from the 1Jy catalogue and the magnification bias
We have found a statistically significant (99.1 \%) excess of red ()
galaxies with photographic magnitudes , taken from the APM Sky
Catalogue around radiosources from the 1Jy catalogue. The amplitude,
scale and dependence on galaxy colours of the observed overdensity are
consistent with its being a result of the magnification bias caused by the weak
gravitational lensing of large scale structures at redshift

Structural properties of the HNF-1A transactivation domain
Hepatocyte nuclear factor 1α (HNF-1A) is a transcription factor with important gene regulatory roles in pancreatic β-cells. HNF1A gene variants are associated with a monogenic form of diabetes (HNF1A-MODY) or an increased risk for type 2 diabetes. While several pancreatic target genes of HNF-1A have been described, a lack of knowledge regarding the structure-function relationships in HNF-1A prohibits a detailed understanding of HNF-1A-mediated gene transcription, which is important for precision medicine and improved patient care. Therefore, we aimed to characterize the understudied transactivation domain (TAD) of HNF-1A in vitro. We present a bioinformatic approach to dissect the TAD sequence, analyzing protein structure, sequence composition, sequence conservation, and the existence of protein interaction motifs. Moreover, we developed the first protocol for the recombinant expression and purification of the HNF-1A TAD. Small-angle X-ray scattering and synchrotron radiation circular dichroism suggested a disordered conformation for the TAD. Furthermore, we present functional data on HNF-1A undergoing liquid-liquid phase separation, which is in line with in silico predictions and may be of biological relevance for gene transcriptional processes in pancreatic β-cells.</p
Metabolic responses of eukaryotic microalgae to environmental stress limit the ability of FT-IR spectroscopy for species identification
AbstractFourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is a robust method for macromolecular analysis and differentiation of microorganisms. However, most studies are performed in controlled conditions and it is unclear whether this tool is appropriate for the identification of eukaryotic microalgae species from variable environments. In order to address this, nine closely-related species of marine and freshwater microalgae were grown under controlled (non-stressed) and variable (non-stressed and stressed) conditions, including nutrient-stressed and wastewater-stressed conditions. Following optimization of data processing methods, FT-IR spectra from all species and conditions were compared. The substantial metabolic changes that were caused by nutrient starvation restricted the ability of FT-IR spectroscopy to differentiate the microalgal species grown under variable conditions efficiently. Comparison of unsupervised and supervised multivariate data analysis methods found that principal component-discriminant function analysis was able best to differentiate between some species under controlled conditions but still gave poor differentiation under variable environmental conditions

Local lung hypoxia determines epithelial fate decisions during alveolar regeneration.
After influenza infection, lineage-negative epithelial progenitors (LNEPs) exhibit a binary response to reconstitute epithelial barriers: activating a Notch-dependent ΔNp63/cytokeratin 5 (Krt5) remodelling program or differentiating into alveolar type II cells (AEC2s). Here we show that local lung hypoxia, through hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF1α), drives Notch signalling and Krt5pos basal-like cell expansion. Single-cell transcriptional profiling of human AEC2s from fibrotic lungs revealed a hypoxic subpopulation with activated Notch, suppressed surfactant protein C (SPC), and transdifferentiation toward a Krt5pos basal-like state. Activated murine Krt5pos LNEPs and diseased human AEC2s upregulate strikingly similar core pathways underlying migration and squamous metaplasia. While robust, HIF1α-driven metaplasia is ultimately inferior to AEC2 reconstitution in restoring normal lung function. HIF1α deletion or enhanced Wnt/β-catenin activity in Sox2pos LNEPs blocks Notch and Krt5 activation, instead promoting rapid AEC2 differentiation and migration and improving the quality of alveolar repair
A combinatorial approach to geometric rough paths and their controlled paths
We develop the structure theory for transformations of weakly geometric rough
paths of bounded -variation and their controlled paths. Our approach
differs from existing approaches as it does not rely on smooth approximations.
We derive an explicit combinatorial expression for the rough path lift of a
controlled path, and use it to obtain fundamental identities such as the
associativity of the rough integral, the adjunction between pushforwards and
pullbacks, and a change of variables formula for rough differential equations
(RDEs). As applications we define rough paths, rough integration and RDEs on
manifolds, extending the results of [CDL15] to the case of arbitrary
Galaxy Zoo: Dust in Spirals
We investigate the effect of dust on spiral galaxies by measuring the
inclination-dependence of optical colours for 24,276 well-resolved SDSS
galaxies visually classified in Galaxy Zoo. We find clear trends of reddening
with inclination which imply a total extinction from face-on to edge-on of 0.7,
0.6, 0.5 and 0.4 magnitudes for the ugri passbands. We split the sample into
"bulgy" (early-type) and "disky" (late-type) spirals using the SDSS fracdeV (or
f_DeV) parameter and show that the average face-on colour of "bulgy" spirals is
redder than the average edge-on colour of "disky" spirals. This shows that the
observed optical colour of a spiral galaxy is determined almost equally by the
spiral type (via the bulge-disk ratio and stellar populations), and reddening
due to dust. We find that both luminosity and spiral type affect the total
amount of extinction, with "disky" spirals at M_r ~ -21.5 mags having the most
reddening. This decrease of reddening for the most luminous spirals has not
been observed before and may be related to their lower levels of recent star
formation. We compare our results with the latest dust attenuation models of
Tuffs et al. We find that the model reproduces the observed trends reasonably
well but overpredicts the amount of u-band attenuation in edge-on galaxies. We
end by discussing the effects of dust on large galaxy surveys and emphasize
that these effects will become important as we push to higher precision

Stellar population models at high spectral resolution
We present new, high-to-intermediate spectral resolution stellar population
models, based on four popular libraries of empirical stellar spectra, namely
Pickles, ELODIE, STELIB and MILES. These new models are the same as our
previous models, but with higher resolution and based on empirical stellar
spectra, while keeping other ingredients the same including the stellar
energetics, the atmospheric parameters and the treatment of the
Thermally-Pulsating Asymptotic Giant Branch and the Horizontal Branch
morphology. We further compute very high resolution (R=20,000) models based on
the theoretical stellar library MARCS which extends to the near-infrared. We
therefore provide merged high resolution stellar population models, extending
from ~1000 AA to 25,000 AA. We compare how these libraries perform in stellar
population models and highlight spectral regions where discrepancies are found.
We confirm our previous findings that the flux around the V-band is lower (in a
normalised sense) in models based on empirical libraries than in those based on
the BaSeL-Kurucz library, which results in a bluer B-V colour. Most noticeably
the theoretical library MARCS gives results fully consistent with the empirical
libraries. This same effect is also found in other models using MILES, namely
Vazdekis et al. and Conroy & Gunn, even though the latter authors reach the
opposite conclusion. The bluer predicted B-V colour (by 0.05 magnitudes in our
models) is in better agreement with both the colours of Luminous Red Galaxies
and globular cluster data. We test the models on their ability to reproduce,
through full spectral fitting, the ages and metallicities of galactic globular
clusters as derived from CMD fitting and find overall good agreement.
