    The Niceness of Unique Sink Orientations

    Random Edge is the most natural randomized pivot rule for the simplex algorithm. Considerable progress has been made recently towards fully understanding its behavior. Back in 2001, Welzl introduced the concepts of \emph{reachmaps} and \emph{niceness} of Unique Sink Orientations (USO), in an effort to better understand the behavior of Random Edge. In this paper, we initiate the systematic study of these concepts. We settle the questions that were asked by Welzl about the niceness of (acyclic) USO. Niceness implies natural upper bounds for Random Edge and we provide evidence that these are tight or almost tight in many interesting cases. Moreover, we show that Random Edge is polynomial on at least nΩ(2n)n^{\Omega(2^n)} many (possibly cyclic) USO. As a bonus, we describe a derandomization of Random Edge which achieves the same asymptotic upper bounds with respect to niceness and discuss some algorithmic properties of the reachmap.Comment: An extended abstract appears in the proceedings of Approx/Random 201

    Capital Importers Pay More for their Imports

    We examine the effects that a country’s net capital flows have on the (border) prices that a country pays for its imports of goods. Using data from 2000 to 2009 for 11 euro area countries we utilize a pricing-to-market specification to study exporters’ pricing behavior to the rest of the countries in the sample, at the industry level, for 900 goods disseminated at the 4- digit Standard International Trade Classification (SITC- revision 3) level. This allows us to construct a panel dataset which contains observations across exporters, importers, industries and time, ending up with a total of 594,327 observations. We find a strong influence of the importing country’s net capital inflows on the border prices of its imports of goods.     Turkish Delight for Some, Cold Turkey for Others?: The Effects of the EU-Turkey Customs Union

    Following Turkey’s application for EU membership in 1987, a Customs Union (CU) between Turkey and the EU, mainly covering trade in manufacturing goods and processed agricultural products, came into effect in 1995. In addition to a large agricultural sector, Turkey also specializes in the production and exportation of relatively low-price, low-quality varieties of manufactured products. We use a theoretical framework in order to demonstrate that these features of the Turkish economy imply asymmetric changes in the trade volumes of the incumbent countries of the EU as a result of the EU-Turkey CU. By examining disaggregated trade data we find that the technologically sophisticated EU countries (e.g., mainly the Northern European countries) are also least similar to Turkey in terms of their export structure, whereas the degree of export similarity between the less technologically sophisticated EU members and Turkey is high. Our econometric results indicate that, in contrast to the “Northern” group’s exports to other EU15 countries (which have remained intact), the Southern countries’s exports to the other EU15 countries have declined as a result of the EU-Turkey CU. Moreover, the extra penetration of the Turkish market by EU countries has not been more favourable to the Southern group. These findings also imply that technologically sophisticated countries may see no significant further benefits from Turkey’s full accession to the EU (whereas the migration and political influence related costs for these countries may be large).European Union, Turkey, customs union, exports, gravity, differentiated products

    The Complexity of Recognizing Unique Sink Orientations

    Given a Boolean Circuit with n inputs and n outputs, we want to decide if it represents a Unique Sink Orientation (USO). USOs are useful combinatorial objects that serve as abstraction of many relevant optimization problems. We prove that recognizing a USO is coNP-complete. However, the situation appears to be more complicated for recognizing acyclic USOs. Firstly, we give a construction to prove that there exist cyclic USOs where the smallest cycle is of superpolynomial size. This implies that the straightforward representation of a cycle (i.e. by a list of vertices) does not make up for a coNP certificate. Inspired by this fact, we investigate the connection of recognizing an acyclic USO to PSPACE and we prove that the problem is PSPACE-complete

    AbstractStatistical analysis of uranium-hydride (UH3) initiation location was undertaken on an as-received Magnox-U sample using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD). Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and focused ion beam (FIB) milling were used for UH3 identification and complementary examination of the reacted surface. From the interrogation of 147 hydride sites on the electrochemically etched sample it was found that hydride formation occurred predominantly around grain and twin boundaries. Clear preference of hydride attack was observed around grains with high rotational mismatch

    Prospects for Integrating Disturbances, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Using Microbial Systems

    Biodiversity is a key driver of ecosystem functioning, while disturbances are a key driver of biodiversity. Consequently, disturbances crucially influence ecosystem functioning– both directly via affecting ecosystem processes but also indirectly via altering biodiversity. We thus need to disclose the joint relationships between disturbances, biodiversity and functioning (DBF) to understand and predict ecosystem dynamics under realistic conditions. However, biodiversity responses to disturbances have so far insufficiently been studied together with biodiversity effects on functions. For many ecosystems, such integrative exploration of DBF relationships would require too extensive manipulations and observations over unfeasible spatial and temporal scales. We argue that microbial systems offer a bright perspective to overcome these limitations, and present a roadmap for doing so. Microbial systems allow us exposing different, well characterized communities to multiple, reproducible disturbance regimes, and precisely measuring both biodiversity and associated functions over time. Comprehensive data can be obtained by systematically varying and replicating representative environmental scenarios. These data can further be explored and explained with computational models. Microbial systems thus reveal mechanisms that underlie DBF relationships and allow scrutinizing ecological hypotheses. This advancement of theory will be essential for ecology as a whole. It is particularly relevant in the context of global change, which is expected to promote disturbances as well as loss of biodiversity and functions in many ecosystem

    Analysis of the olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae transcriptome and phylogenetic classification of the major detoxification gene families

    he olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae has a unique ability to cope with olive flesh, and is the most destructive pest of olives worldwide. Its control has been largely based on the use of chemical insecticides, however, the selection of insecticide resistance against several insecticides has evolved. The study of detoxification mechanisms, which allow the olive fruit fly to defend against insecticides, and/or phytotoxins possibly present in the mesocarp, has been hampered by the lack of genomic information in this species. In the NCBI database less than 1,000 nucleotide sequences have been deposited, with less than 10 detoxification gene homologues in total. We used 454 pyrosequencing to produce, for the first time, a large transcriptome dataset for B. oleae. A total of 482,790 reads were assembled into 14,204 contigs. More than 60% of those contigs (8,630) were larger than 500 base pairs, and almost half of them matched with genes of the order of the Diptera. Analysis of the Gene Ontology (GO) distribution of unique contigs, suggests that, compared to other insects, the assembly is broadly representative for the B. oleae transcriptome. Furthermore, the transcriptome was found to contain 55 P450, 43 GST-, 15 CCE- and 18 ABC transporter-genes. Several of those detoxification genes, may putatively be involved in the ability of the olive fruit fly to deal with xenobiotics, such as plant phytotoxins and insecticides. In summary, our study has generated new data and genomic resources, which will substantially facilitate molecular studies in B. oleae, including elucidation of detoxification mechanisms of xenobiotic, as well as other important aspects of olive fruit fly biology

    Differential Expression of CRH, UCN, CRHR1 and CRHR2 in Eutopic and Ectopic Endometrium of Women with Endometriosis.

    Endometriosis is considered as a benign aseptic inflammatory disease, characterised by the presence of ectopic endometrium-like tissue. Its symptoms (mostly pain and infertility) are reported as constant stressors. Corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) and urocortin (UCN) are neuropeptides, strongly related to stress and inflammation. The effects of CRH and UCN are mediated through CRHR1 and CRHR2 receptors which are implicated in several reproductive functions acting as inflammatory components. However, the involvement of these molecules to endometriosis remains unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of CRHR1 and CRHR2 in endometriotic sites and to compare the expression of CRHR1 and CRHR2 in eutopic endometrium of endometriotic women to that of healthy women. We further compared the expression of CRH, UCN, CRHR1 and CRHR2 in ectopic endometrium to that in eutopic endometrium of women with endometriosis. Endometrial biopsy specimens were taken from healthy women (10 patients) and endometrial and endometriotic biopsy specimens were taken from women with endometriosis (16 patients). Τhe expression of CRH, UCN, CRHR1, and CRHR2 was tested via RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. This study shows for the first time that CRH and UCN receptor subtypes CRHR1β and CRHR2α are expressed in endometriotic sites and that they are more strongly expressed (p<0.01) in eutopic endometrium of women with endometriosis compared to healthy women endometrium at the mRNA and protein level. CRH, UCN, CRHR1 and CRHR2 mRNA were also more highly expressed in ectopic rather than eutopic endometrium (CRH, UCN, CRHR2α: p<0.01, CRHR1β: p<0.05) and protein (CRH and UCN: p<0.05, CRHR1 and CRHR2: p<0.01) in women with endometriosis. These data indicate that CRH and UCN might play an immunoregulatory role in endometriotic sites by affecting reproductive functions such as decidualization and implantation of women with endometriosis

    Oxidative stress stimulates alpha-tocopherol transfer protein in human trophoblast tumor cells BeWo

    alpha-Tocopherol transfer protein (alpha-TTP) has been identified as the major intracellular transport protein for the antioxidant vitamin E (alpha-Tocopherol). Expression of alpha-TTP on the reproductive system has been described both in mouse uterus and lately in the human placenta. The aim of this study was to clarify if placental expression of alpha-TTP can be modified by substances causing oxidative reactions. The human choriocarcinoma cell line BeWo was, therefore, treated with two known pro-oxidants. alpha-TTP expression was determined with immunocytochemistry and evaluated by applying a semiquantitative score. The presence of pro-oxidants in BeWo cells induced alpha-TTP expression. We thus hypothesize that stimulation of alpha-TTP expression by oxidative stress, as this was induced by pro-oxidants, could be part of an antioxidant process occurring in the placenta in the aim of enhancing the supply of alpha-Tocopherol. This process could occur both in normal pregnancies, as well as in pregnancy disorders presented with intensified oxidative stress. In that view, this model is proposed for further oxidative stress studies on trophoblast and placenta, on the grounds of clarifying the role of alpha-Tocopherol in pregnancy physiology and pathophysiology
