Change in soy and nutrition knowledge and perceptions of smallholder South African farmers after attending a single one day soy nutrition training workshop: A pilot study
The main aim of this pilot study was to assess smallholder soy farmersâ knowledge and perceptions of soy immediately before and after participating in a one-day soy nutrition training workshop. A pre-post study design was used among a convenience sample of 78soy smallholder farmers from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (SA). A total of 78 men and five women participated in the training, but because only five women attended, gender comparison analysis was not carried out. A soy nutrition training workshop, including soy cooking demonstrations, tasting, recipe development, that is based on the Social Cognitive Theory, was implemented for eight consecutive hours with one break of 30 minutes. Pre- and post-quantitative data measuring,soy knowledge and perceptions werecollected using a modified version of a survey, tested for face and content validity and reliability, and used previously in other research study projects by the same authors among low-resource communities in SA. The data from the pre and post questionnaires indicated that only 41% of the soy smallholder farmers used soy in the household and mainly in meat dishes. The rest of the harvested soy was either sold or used for animal feed. The mean±standard deviation (SD) score of taste preference changed significantly (p=0.002) from 4.60±0.84 before, to 4.93±0.13 after the training (p=0.002) and the majority of the participants perceived it was easy to prepare soy foods; 82.1% and 88.5% before and after the training, respectively (p=0.013). Participantsâ soy knowledge improved significantly (p<0.001) from a mean± (SD) score of 26.33±4.06 before to 32.00±9.46 after the intervention, indicating a significant improvement of 5.67±9.11 [13.83%] in the total score. The results from this study indicate that there is a need for nutrition education programs for smallholder farmers. Thus, improvement in both soy knowledge and preference should result in more soy being consumed first for household nutritional needs before giving it to either animals or sell it on the market. Since smallholder farmersâ nutrition education can impact both food insecurity and nutritional status improvement in one setting, more interventions of this kind are needed to further advance the frontier of this niche area of research.

Understanding the Effects of a Tannin Extract on Forage Protein Digestion in the Rumen and Abomasum Using a Dynamic Artificial Digestive System Coupled to a Digestomic Approach
Improving the use efficiency of dietary protein in ruminants is a major challenge to decrease feed supplementation and significantly decrease nitrogen (N) losses to the environment. The aim of this study was to characterize the effects of tannins on protein digestion in the rumen and in conditions simulating the abomasum, using a dynamic in vitro digestive system coupled to a digestomic approach. Three ruminally-cannulated sheep fed with alfalfa hay were infused daily with a solution of tannins, while three other sheep were infused with water (control). Standardized ruminal fluid was introduced into the digester, which simulated the transit of digesta under physicochemical conditions mimicking the abomasum in terms of pH regulation, digestive enzyme infusions and transit rate. Protein degradation in the rumen and in the simulated abomasum was analyzed by determination of fermentation end-products, and identification and quantification of peptides (Label Free Quantification) by LC-MS/MS high resolution (Orbitrap). The analysis of rumen samples showed that tannins result in a clear decrease of fermentation end-products related to protein degradation, namely ammonia (NH3) and iso-volatile fatty acids (VFA), and a greater abundance of the Rubisco, a major plant protein. In the simulated abomasal compartment, the peptidomic analysis showed that the hydrolysis intensity of Rubisco was higher in the presence of tannins compared to the control group. These results indicate that protein-tannin complexes could be dissociated in the physico-chemical conditions of the abomasum, increasing the flow of peptides to the intestine after protection of protein by tannins in the rumen
Driving Aptitude of CCC Enrollees as Compared with a Similar Age Group from the General Population
Two groups of individuals were compared on characteristics pertaining to sensory, motor and central processes, assumed to be necessary to efficiency in driving an automobile, to determine the degree of similarity between traits of 44 CCC enrollees and an unselected sample of 70 youths from the same age groups. The only significant differences found were: (1) CCC enrollees were shorter in stature and (2) less active than the .general population. (3) The vision of the CCC enrollees was also poorer and (4) they lacked experience with automobiles as compared with the average youth
Estimation of the additive and dominance variances in South African Landrace pigs
The objective of this study was to estimate dominance variance for number born alive (NBA), 21- day litter weight (LWT21) and interval between parities (FI) in South African Landrace pigs. A total of 26223 NBA, 21335 LWT21 and 16370 FI records were analysed. Bayesian analysis via Gibbs sampling was used to estimate variance components and genetic parameters were calculated from posterior distributions. Estimates of additive genetic variance were 0.669, 43.46 d2 and 9.02 kg2 for NBA, FI and LWT21, respectively. Corresponding estimates of dominance variance were 0.439, 123.68 d2 and 2.52 kg2, respectively. Dominance effects were important for NBA and FI. Permanent environmental effects were significant for FI and LWT21. It may be beneficial to evaluate non-additive genetic merit of individuals and families in addition to their transmitting abilities. A breeding program that capitalizes on non-additive genetic merit may be desirable. Biofilms associated with bowel necrosis: A newly recognised phenomenon in infants.
Background. A biofilm is defined as a collection of organisms attached to a surface and surrounded by a matrix. Objective. To present three cases in which bowel necrosis coexisted with biofilm. Methods. The medical records, bacteriological findings and tissue biopsies from three infants with bowel necrosis who subsequently died from sepsis were analysed. Tissue sent for histological evaluation was prepared for light microscopy. Haematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Sandiford and Alcian blue/periodic acid Schiff (ABPAS) stains were performed. Tissue samples were ex-waxed for electron microscopy in one case. Results. The three patients described all had necrotic bowel at laparotomy, all cultured Klebsiella pneumoniae from peritoneal pus swabs, and all died despite appropriate antibiotics. All specimens showed varying degrees of bowel necrosis and an organising acute peritoneal reaction. In addition, all showed colonies of Gram-negative bacteria within a mucopolysaccharide matrix. Conclusions. The identification of biofilms in necrotic bowel has raised questions regarding their clinical implications. Further studies are needed to evaluate all resected necrotic bowel for biofilms and the clinical implications of this finding
Dynamic Impedance of Two-Dimensional Superconducting Films Near the Superconducting Transition
The sheet impedances, Z(w,T), of several superconducting a-Mo77Ge23 films and
one In/InOx film have been measured in zero field using a two-coil mutual
inductance technique at frequencies from 100 Hz to 100 kHz. Z(w,T) is found to
have three contributions: the inductive superfluid, renormalized by nonvortex
phase fluctuations; conventional vortex-antivortex pairs, whose contribution
turns on very rapidly just below the usual Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii
unbinding temperature; and an anomalous contribution. The latter is
predominantly resistive, persists well below the KTB temperature, and is weakly
dependent on frequency down to remarkably low frequencies, at least 100 Hz. It
increases with T as e-U'(T)/kT, where the activation energy, U'(T), is about
half the energy to create a vortex-antivortex pair, indicating that the
frequency dependence is that of individual excitations, rather than critical
