Modern Slavery, Environmental Degradation and Climate Change: Fisheries, Field, Forests and Factories
In this commentary paper, the current state of research on the tightly connected and bi-directional relationships among modern slavery, environmental degradation and climate change is critically assessed and reviewed. An emerging branch of research has begun to conceptualize linkages between slavery and environmental change. Responding to a gap in the extant literature, this paper synthesizes and makes sense of this emerging research base and proposes a future research agenda for exploring the slaveryâenvironment nexus. Through an exploration of 19 key texts which explicitly examine the relationship between slavery and environmental change, spanning across diverse disciplines and spatial scales, we draw out two key arguments that can be adopted in proposing a future research agenda. Firstly, we identify the sectoral emergence of the nexus, forming primarily around four key sectors: (i) Fisheries, (ii) Fields, (iii) Forests and (iv) Factories. The review suggests that a sufficient exploration of slaveryâenvironment linkages needs to transverse these sectoral boundaries. Secondly, the paper highlights the bi-directional interactions among modern slavery, climate change and environmental degradation. Accordingly, we argue for a holistic lens which explores how slavery practices and environmental change are continually shaping one another. Existing research has provided initial understandings of the relationship among modern slavery, environmental destruction and climate change. However, there remains considerable scope for the connections between the three to be further interrogated and unpacked. Based on the review, the paper sets out three key research agendas, highlighting the need to move beyond a spatially and sectorally confined exploration of slaveryâenvironment interactions towards an integrated and sophisticated interrogation of the nexus. Additionally, we propose the future examination of the deep underlying drivers of slaveryâenvironment interactions and to situate these within contemporary capitalist social and economic relations
The fields of HIV and disability: past, present and future
This article provides an historic overview of the fields of disability and HIV. We describe this area of concern in terms of "fields" versus "a single field" because of the two related but distinct trends that have evolved over time. The first field involves people living with HIV and their experiences of disability, disablement and rehabilitation brought on by the disease and its treatments. The second involves people with disabilities and their experiences of vulnerability to and life with HIV. These two fields have evolved relatively independently over time. However, in the final section of this article, we argue that the divide between these fields is collapsing, and that this collapse is beginning to produce a new understanding about shared concerns, cross-field learning and the mutual benefits that might be realized from integrating policy and programmatic responses. We close by identifying directions that we expect these merging fields to take in the coming years

Musculoskeletal disorders are common and costly disorders to workers compensation and motor accident insurance systems and are a leading contributor to the burden of ill-health. In Australia, vocational rehabilitation is provided to workers to assist them to stay in or return to work. Self-management training may be an innovative addition to improve health and employment outcomes from vocational rehabilitation
Informality and the context of reception in South Africa's new immigrant destinations
This study examines the context of reception for Zimbabwean migrants who are
engaged in South Africa's informal economy. It seeks to contribute to two areas of
migration scholarship: (a) the emergence of new immigrant destinations in the global
South and (b) the role of the informal economy in shaping the context of reception
for migrants in new gateway cities. Through surveys of Zimbabwean day labourers in
Tshwane (formerly Pretoria), we document the poverty and the food and housing
insecurity these migrants and their dependents endure resulting from
underemployment in the informal economy. The analysis presented here suggests that
although it has received little attention from migration scholars, the informal economy
can play a significant role in shaping the context of reception for immigrants in the new
gateway cities of the global South. In many destination countries, the informal economy
absorbs large numbers of migrants, making it an important, if flawed, source of
employment, earnings, and remittances. With increasing levels of migration to major
cities, the informal economy has become a key arena of migrant incorporation, with
farâreaching implications for lives and livelihoods.IBSS & Scopu
Delivering NEET policy packages? A decade of NEET policy in England
This article explores the way in which government policy shapes the lives of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). In particular it examines how the concept of NEETs is set within a specific infrastructure and discourse for managing and supporting young people. The article provides a brief history of the NEET concept and NEET initiatives, before moving on to scrutinise the policies of the Coalition Government. A key distinction is made between those policies and practices that seek to prevent young people becoming NEET from those that seek to re-engage those who are NEET. It is argued that the Coalition has drawn on a similar active labour market toolkit to the previous Labour administration, but that this has been implemented with fewer resources and less co-ordination. It concludes that there is little reason to believe that Coalition policy will be any more successful than that of the previous government, and some reason to be concerned that it will lead to young people becoming more entrenched within NEET
Human resources for health policies: a critical component in health policies
In the last few years, increasing attention has been paid to the development of health policies. But side by side with the presumed benefits of policy, many analysts share the opinion that a major drawback of health policies is their failure to make room for issues of human resources. Current approaches in human resources suggest a number of weaknesses: a reactive, ad hoc attitude towards problems of human resources; dispersal of accountability within human resources management (HRM); a limited notion of personnel administration that fails to encompass all aspects of HRM; and finally the short-term perspective of HRM. There are three broad arguments for modernizing the ways in which human resources for health are managed: ⢠the central role of the workforce in the health sector; ⢠the various challenges thrown up by health system reforms; ⢠the need to anticipate the effect on the health workforce (and consequently on service provision) arising from various macroscopic social trends impinging on health systems. The absence of appropriate human resources policies is responsible, in many countries, for a chronic imbalance with multifaceted effects on the health workforce: quantitative mismatch, qualitative disparity, unequal distribution and a lack of coordination between HRM actions and health policy needs. Four proposals have been put forward to modernize how the policy process is conducted in the development of human resources for health (HRH): ⢠to move beyond the traditional approach of personnel administration to a more global concept of HRM; ⢠to give more weight to the integrated, interdependent and systemic nature of the different components of HRM when preparing and implementing policy; ⢠to foster a more proactive attitude among human resources (HR) policy-makers and managers; ⢠to promote the full commitment of all professionals and sectors in all phases of the process. The development of explicit human resources policies is a crucial link in health policies and is needed both to address the imbalances of the health workforce and to foster implementation of the health services reforms
Neoliberalism and the revival of agricultural cooperatives: The case of the coffee sector in Uganda
Agricultural cooperatives have seen a comeback in subâSaharan Africa. After the collapse of many weakly performing monopolist organizations during the 1980s and 1990s, strengthened cooperatives have emerged since the 2000s. Scholarly knowledge about the stateâcooperative relations in which this ârevivalâ takes place remains poor. Based on new evidence from Uganda's coffee sector, this paper discusses the political economy of Africa's cooperative revival. The authors argue that donors' and African governments' renewed support is framed in largely apolitical terms, which obscures the contested political and economic nature of the revival. In the context of neoliberal restructuring processes, state and nonâstate institutional support to democratic economic organizations with substantial redistributional agendas remains insufficient. The politicalâeconomic context in Ugandaâand potentially elsewhere in Africaâcontributes to poor terms of trade for agricultural cooperatives while maintaining significant state control over some cooperative activities to protect the status quo interests of big capital and state elites. These conditions are unlikely to produce a conflictâfree, substantial, and sustained revival of cooperatives, which the new promoters of cooperatives suggest is under way
