Validity of the Polar V800 heart rate monitor to measure RR intervals at rest
Purpose To assess the validity of RR intervals and short-term heart rate variability (HRV) data obtained from the Polar V800 heart rate monitor, in comparison to an electrocardiograph (ECG). Method Twenty participants completed an active orthostatic test using the V800 and ECG. An improved method for the identification and correction of RR intervals was employed prior to HRV analysis. Agreement of the data was assessed using intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), Bland–Altman limits of agreement (LoA), and effect size (ES). Results A small number of errors were detected between ECG and Polar RR signal, with a combined error rate of 0.086 %. The RR intervals from ECG to V800 were significantly different, but with small ES for both supine corrected and standing corrected data (ES 0.999 for both supine and standing corrected intervals. When analysed with the same HRV software no significant differences were observed in any HRV parameters, for either supine or standing; the data displayed small bias and tight LoA, strong ICC (>0.99) and small ES (≤0.029). Conclusions The V800 improves over previous Polar models, with narrower LoA, stronger ICC and smaller ES for both the RR intervals and HRV parameters. The findings support the validity of the Polar V800 and its ability to produce RR interval recordings consistent with an ECG. In addition, HRV parameters derived from these recordings are also highly comparable
Viewing Nature Scenes Positively Affects Recovery of Autonomic Function Following Acute-Mental Stress
A randomized crossover study explored whether viewing different scenes prior to a stressor altered autonomic function during the recovery from the stressor. The two scenes were (a) nature (composed of trees, grass, fields) or (b) built (composed of man-made, urban scenes lacking natural characteristics) environments. Autonomic function was assessed using noninvasive techniques of heart rate variability; in particular, time domain analyses evaluated parasympathetic activity, using root-mean-square of successive differences (RMSSD). During stress, secondary cardiovascular markers (heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure) showed significant increases from baseline which did not differ between the two viewing conditions. Parasympathetic activity, however, was significantly higher in recovery following the stressor in the viewing scenes of nature condition compared to viewing scenes depicting built environments (RMSSD; 50.0 ± 31.3 vs 34.8 ± 14.8 ms). Thus, viewing nature scenes prior to a stressor alters autonomic activity in the recovery period. The secondary aim was to examine autonomic function during viewing of the two scenes. Standard deviation of R-R intervals (SDRR), as change from baseline, during the first 5 min of viewing nature scenes was greater than during built scenes. Overall, this suggests that nature can elicit improvements in the recovery process following a stressor. © 2013 American Chemical Society
Kinstate intervention in ethnic conflicts : Albania and Turkey compared
Albania and Turkey did not act in overtly irredentist ways towards their ethnic brethren in neighboring states after the end of communism. Why, nonetheless, did Albania facilitate the increase of ethnic conflict in Kosovo and Macedonia, while Turkey did not, with respect to the Turks of Bulgaria? I argue that kin-states undergoing transition are more prone to intervene in external conflicts than states that are not, regardless of the salience of minority demands in the host-state. The transition weakens the institutions of the kin-state. Experiencing limited institutional constraints, self-seeking state officials create alliances with secessionist and autonomist movements across borders alongside their own ideological, clan-based and particularistic interests. Such alliances are often utilized to advance radical domestic agendas. Unlike in Albania's transition environment, in Turkey there were no emerging elites that could potentially form alliances and use external movements to legitimize their own domestic existence or claims
Observation of the Hadronic Transitions Chi_{b 1,2}(2P) -> omega Upsilon(1S)
The CLEO Collaboration has observed the first hadronic transition among
bottomonium (b bbar) states other than the dipion transitions among vector
states, Upsilon(nS) -> pi pi Upsilon(mS). In our study of Upsilon(3S) decays,
we find a significant signal for Upsilon(3S) -> gamma omega Upsilon(1S) that is
consistent with radiative decays Upsilon(3S) -> gamma chi_{b 1,2}(2P), followed
by chi_{b 1,2} -> omega Upsilon(1S). The branching ratios we obtain are
Br(chi_{b1} -> omega Upsilon(1S) = 1.63 (+0.35 -0.31) (+0.16 -0.15) % and
Br(chi_{b2} -> omega Upsilon(1S) = 1.10 (+0.32 -0.28) (+0.11 - 0.10)%, in which

Fermi LAT Observations of the Supernova Remnant W28 (G6.4-0.1)
We present detailed analysis of the two gamma-ray sources,1FGL J1801.3-2322c
and 1FGL J1800.5-2359c,that have been found toward the supernova remnant(SNR)
W28 with the Large Area Telescope(LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space
Telescope.1FGL J1801.3-2322c is found to be an extended source within the
boundary of SNR W28,and to extensively overlap with the TeV gamma-ray source
HESS J1801-233,which is associated with a dense molecular cloud interacting
with the supernova remnant.The gamma-ray spectrum measured with LAT from
0.2--100 GeV can be described by a broken power-law function with a break of
~1GeV,and photon indices of 2.090.08(stat)0.28(sys) below the break
and 2.740.06(stat)0.09(sys) above the break.Given the clear
association between HESS J1801-233 and the shocked molecular cloud and a
smoothly connected spectrum in the GeV--TeV band,we consider the origin of the
gamma-ray emission in both GeV and TeV ranges to be the interaction between
particles accelerated in the SNR and the molecular cloud.The decay of neutral
pions produced in interactions between accelerated hadrons and dense molecular
gas provide a reasonable explanation for the broadband gamma-ray spectrum. 1FGL
J1800.5-2359c, located outside the southern boundary of SNR W28, cannot be
resolved.An upper limit on the size of the gamma-ray emission was estimated to
be ~16 using events above ~2GeV under the assumption of a circular shape
with uniform surface brightness. It appears to coincide with the TeV source
HESS J1800-240B,which is considered to be associated with a dense molecular
cloud that contains the ultra compact HII region W28A2(G5.89-0.39).We found no
significant gamma-ray emission in the LAT energy band at the positions of TeV
sources HESS J1800-230A and HESS J1800-230C.The LAT data for HESS J1800-230A
combined with the TeV data points indicate a spectral break between 10GeV and

Gamma-ray flaring activity from the gravitationally lensed blazar PKS 1830-211 observed by Fermi LAT
The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope
routinely detects the highly dust-absorbed, reddened, and MeV-peaked flat
spectrum radio quasar PKS 1830-211 (z=2.507). Its apparent isotropic gamma-ray
luminosity (E>100 MeV) averaged over 3 years of observations and peaking
on 2010 October 14/15 at 2.9 X 10^{50} erg s^{-1}, makes it among the brightest
high-redshift Fermi blazars. No published model with a single lens can account
for all of the observed characteristics of this complex system. Based on radio
observations, one expects time delayed variability to follow about 25 days
after a primary flare, with flux about a factor 1.5 less. Two large gamma-ray
flares of PKS 1830-211 have been detected by the LAT in the considered period
and no substantial evidence for such a delayed activity was found. This allows
us to place a lower limit of about 6 on the gamma rays flux ratio between the
two lensed images. Swift XRT observations from a dedicated Target of
Opportunity program indicate a hard spectrum and with no significant
correlation of X-ray flux with the gamma-ray variability. The spectral energy
distribution can be modeled with inverse Compton scattering of thermal photons
from the dusty torus. The implications of the LAT data in terms of variability,
the lack of evident delayed flare events, and different radio and gamma-ray
flux ratios are discussed. Microlensing effects, absorption, size and location
of the emitting regions, the complex mass distribution of the system, an
energy-dependent inner structure of the source, and flux suppression by the
lens galaxy for one image path may be considered as hypotheses for

Observation of a Narrow Resonance of Mass 2.46 GeV/c^2 Decaying to D_s^*+ pi^0 and Confirmation of the D_sJ^* (2317) State
Using 13.5 inverse fb of e+e- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II
detector we have observed a narrow resonance in the Ds*+pi0 final state, with a
mass near 2.46 GeV. The search for such a state was motivated by the recent
discovery by the BaBar Collaboration of a narrow state at 2.32 GeV, the
DsJ*(2317)+ that decays to Ds+pi0. Reconstructing the Ds+pi0 and Ds*+pi0 final
states in CLEO data, we observe peaks in both of the corresponding
reconstructed mass difference distributions, dM(Dspi0)=M(Dspi0)-M(Ds) and
dM(Ds*pi0)=M(Ds*pi0)-M(Ds*), both of them at values near 350 MeV. We interpret
these peaks as signatures of two distinct states, the DsJ*(2317)+ plus a new
state, designated as the DsJ(2463)+. Because of the similar dM values, each of
these states represents a source of background for the other if photons are
lost, ignored or added. A quantitative accounting of these reflections confirms
that both states exist. We have measured the mean mass differences
= 350.0 +/- 1.2 [stat] +/- 1.0 [syst] MeV for the DsJ*(2317) state, and
= 351.2 +/- 1.7 [stat] +/- 1.0 [syst] MeV for the new DsJ(2463)+
state. We have also searched, but find no evidence, for decays of the two
states via the channels Ds*+gamma, Ds+gamma, and Ds+pi+pi-. The observations of
the two states at 2.32 and 2.46 GeV, in the Ds+pi0 and Ds*+pi0 decay channels
respectively, are consistent with their interpretations as (c anti-strange)
mesons with orbital angular momentum L=1, and spin-parities of 0+ and 1+.Comment: 16 pages postscript, also available through

Fermi observations of high-energy gamma-ray emission from GRB 090217A
The Fermi observatory is advancing our knowledge of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs)
through pioneering observations at high energies, covering more than 7 decades
in energy with the two on-board detectors, the Large Area Telescope (LAT) and
the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). Here we report on the observation of the
long GRB 090217A which triggered the GBM and has been detected by the LAT with
a significance greater than 9 sigma. We present the GBM and LAT observations
and on-ground analyses, including the time-resolved spectra and the study of
the temporal profile from 8 keV up to 1 GeV. All spectra are well reproduced by
a Band model. We compare these observations to the first two LAT-detected, long
bursts GRB 080825C and GRB 080916C. These bursts were found to have
time-dependent spectra and exhibited a delayed onset of the high-energy
emission, which are not observed in the case of GRB 090217A. We discuss some
