Intergenerational and gender relations in albanian migrant families. The example of household labour division
Household labour division in Albanian migrants’ families living in Athens constitutesan interesting example illustrating the evolution of intergenerational and genderrelations, as these develop under the influence of the labour market conditions. Usingthe life stories of twenty five members of Albanian families, the present article focuseson household labour division, as it figures in three generations: the grandparents inAlbania, the parents-migrants and the children-migrants. To start with, it describes theexisting situation per generation, emphasising the role distribution per gender and thesubsequent distribution of power per gender and per generation. Then, it points outsome emerging intergenerational tendencies of changes observed in theintergenerational and gender relations. The article concludes by drawing attention tothose aspects of household labour division requiring further investigation
The Evaluation of the Educational Project in Students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in Regular School

Capacity retirement in the dry bulk market: A vessel based logit model
The paper investigates the effect of vessel specific and market variables on the probability of scrapping dry bulk ships of different sizes. Using a 2012-2015 dataset, we find that, the probability of scrapping increases with age, but that the relation between vessels size and scrapping probability varies across the different segments. That is, the scrapping probability is lower for larger vessels in size segments where there is a trend towards building larger vessels. In addition, while the relation between earnings and probability of scrapping ships is negative, bunker prices seem to only affect the scrapping rate of smaller tonnage
The Effect of Augmented Reality on the Development of Social Skills of Children with Autism
The use of new technologies in the process of educational intervention is undoubtedly a basic and valuable tool for teachers Specifically using new forms of representation of educational content and providing a teaching practice that enhances the user s visual perception of the real environment is a key factor favoring the educational inclusion of students with special educational needs In the present study we will investigate whether teachers believe that the use of augmented reality AR in children with autism affects their social skills as well as the possibilities of augmented reality in enhancing the communication skills of children with ASD in areas speech social interaction pretend play reading enhancing visual perception imitative ability attention management and perception of the physical worl
Gender in Science without Numbers: From academia to work-life balance. Main Results of Case Studies
The present volume titled «Gender in Science without Numbers: from academia to work-life balance» refers to the qualitative research undertaken by the National Centre for Social Research, in the context of a project on «Work-life balance in the context of changing families and labour market in Greece». This project has been part of the European Area’s Financial Mechanism WORLBAL, with code EEA GR07/3939. The volume includes short reviews of the main results of case studies focusing on the work-life balance of eleven categories of women professionals and scientists.
The qualitative research showed that the relationship between work and family life has been significantly influenced by the new conditions imposed by the recent economic crisis. Seven years after the advent of the crisis, the Greek society has undergone a variety of changes which are reflected in income, employment, state care services, benefits and allowances affecting those working in both, the public and the private sector. Within these conditions, the relationship between work and family life, as shown by the project’s case studies, has suffered by the successive shocks of social transformations taking place during the crisis. This is especially true for women professionals. In addition, key dimensions of gender inequality existing even before the recent economic crisis have been prevalent as well
Representations of gender in public rhetoric. The case of law-making on immigration in the Greek parliament
This article intends to investigate the way in which gender stereotypes, even when latent, are so potent that manage to emerge, leaving their gender inscription on social issues publicly debated in neutral terms. Even in cases of competing political actors representing different fragments of the political spectrum, these stereotypes are actually reproduced identically. They frame in the same way the public speech of politicians regardless of their gender. These arguments are evidenced in the case of law-making on immigration in Greece through the examination of the relevant parliamentary debates. In fact, the analysis of the debate on a single legal provision concerning the issuing of work permits to foreign artists is proven more than adequate for understanding the ways in which social representations on gender are implicated in public rhetoric. This article intends to investigate the way in which gender stereotypes, even when latent, are so potent that manage to emerge, leaving their gender inscription on social issues publicly debated in neutral terms. Investors' behaviour and dynamics of ship prices: a heterogeneous agent model
Distinguishing investors into speculators and operators, and classifying the former group into momentum and contrarian investors, we develop a heterogeneous agent model (HAM) to examine the dynamics of price of second-hand dry bulk ships. The results suggest that momentum strategies based on short-term measures of earnings perform significantly better than the contrarian or passive (buy-and-hold) strategies. The HAM seems to capture the dynamics of vessel prices and the investors’ behavior in the market for ships very well. Finally, an increase in participation of momentum investors tends to increase price volatility, whereas higher demand from contrarian investors seems to lower price variability
Research in recent years shows that the use of robotics can be an important tool in
enhancing the cooperation and social interaction of children with autism. According to the
literature review, the use of social assistance robots as an aid can bring significant benefits
to the development of social skills in children with autism in areas that show underlying
deficits. In the present research we will investigate the attitudes of teachers about the
basic technical elements of social assistance robots that affect and function therapeutically
in enhancing the collaborative and communicative behavior of children with autism. The
analysis of the data concerns the effect of robotic tools on enhancing the cooperation and
communication skills of children with autism in areas such as, verbal ability, eye contact,
reduction of stereotypical behavior of children, imitation
Sustainability and strategic directions in maritime education and training provision: An exploration of employers’ perceptions
The paper explores the importance of sustainability from the perspective of prospective employers of future and existing Maritime Education and Training (MET) graduates. More specifically, it investigates employers’ views on the incorporation of sustainability into MET provision. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey that addresses the concept of sustainability – among other emerging trends - from the angle of maritime education and training was distributed to European shipowning companies in the context of related EU funded research (SkillSea). A total of 23 responses were received but, albeit the relatively small sample, the findings suggest clearly that there is a significant gap between the skills presently acquired through MET. They also reveal the need for METs to develop a strategy aiming at a more comprehensive inclusion of the mega-trend of sustainability as a subject into the curricula of the various types of MET institutions. This paper contributes to the literature by addressing the mismatch between current and future needs and related issues arising for maritime education and training.Peer Reviewe
