This article discusses the potential effects of Brazil's inclusion policy on the linguistic education of deaf children. To this end, based on the theoretical perspective of authors from the field of Deaf Studies and Language Policies, a case study was conducted, observing interactions of a deaf child enrolled in a public kindergarten school in southeastern Brazil. Through analysis of video-recorded classroom observations and field notes, the study highlights efforts and challenges in implementing bilingual education, where the roles of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese (spoken by the majority of the participants in the classroom) are still not well-defined. In addition, the study also revealed that the observed deaf child has limited access to both languages, crucial for his/her human development. In conclusion, in order inclusion to be viable, bilingual deaf education in Brazil requires more precise guidelines and linguistic-pedagogical training for for all stakeholders, including family members, to create a linguistically-rich environment that supports the holistic development of deaf children.

Children’s independent mobility is the way he or she develops throught time a solid representation of the environment (memory, perception, identification) as well as a progressive independence of action in the day by day environment (Neto, 2004; Kittä, 2004a; 2004b). Based on this idea this study seeks to find if there are any differences between children of two different social contexts about their independent mobility. We also tried to find differences between gender. We’ve studied children’s daily routines, independent mobility, affordances, social skills and some of their parents demographic characteristics. Our sample was a group of 42 children, age range between 8 and 10 years old. We’ve compared 21 children of a poor social environment with 21 children of a better social environment, that live in the surrounding area of the city of Lisbon. We’ve concluded that children from the poor social environment perform more activities and go to more places in their daily routines. This group of children also has more independent mobility – we’ve found significative differences between both groups on the amout of places they go to with their peers and with their parents. Girls in general, have less independent mobility than boys. Both groups have more affordances on games of social interaction. Children of the poor social environment present more social skills that the other children on institucionalized or organized activities, where there is adult supervision. Children’s parents from the better social environment, have more school education, they own the house where they live, their house has more rooms and they have two or more cars. All parents used to walk to go to the school when they were children. Children’s parents from the better social environment mentioned that they´ve had more freedoom to go out by themselves when they had their kids age

A case of malignant neoplasm is described in which the initial manifestations were mental dysfunction and meningeal irritation, mimicking chronic or subacute meningitis. Physical examination showed cranial nerve involvement and a pelvic tumor. There was progressive deterioration, and death occurred in 2 weeks. The autopsy revealed a gallbladder adenocarcinoma, meningeal carcinomatosis, and ovarian metastasis presenting as a Krukenberg tumor. The authors emphasize the importance of including meningeal carcinomatosis as a possibility in the differential diagnosis of non-characteristic clinical pictures, as well as the importance of the cerebrospinal fluid cytologic examination, repeated as needed, in order to confirm this diagnosis

The aim of this work was to contribute to the fabrication of a new of product, a fresh sausage based on meat from culled sheep and goat animals as a way to give added value to animals with very low marketing price. A total of 280 animals, 140 ewes and 140 goats were slaughtered, during seven months. The fabrication of sausages was carried out at a local industry and two samples of goat and sheep sausages were taken every month. Laboratory analyses of all parameters were made by triplicate. Concerning the fatty acids profile, it was checked that the main fatty acids (oleic acid (C18:1), palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0) and linolenic acid (C18:2)), influenced the different fractions which characterize them (monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), saturated fatty acids (SFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Fatty acids profile could be also used as authentication tools for further monitoring and fraud detection in this kind of traditional food product

The main objective of this work was the sensory characterization of fresh sausages from 140 culled Serrana goats and 140 culled Churra Galega Bragançana ewes, to improve the added value of this animals. Species and type of preparation effects were studied. Odour intensity, presence of strange odour, flavour intensity, presence of strange flavour, toughness, juiciness, stringiness, spicy intensity, sweet intensity and overall acceptability were evaluated by a taste panel. Taste, spicy taste, texture and overall appreciation were evaluated by a consumers’ panel. Taste panel data were analysed by a Gerenalised Procrustes Analysis and a characterization of the product. Consumers’ panel data were analysed by Preference Maps. The first 2 factors explained 86,7% of total variation. Different sausages samples were perfectly differentiated by assessors. Goats sausages have been considered more tough and fibrous and the sheep’s most succulent. The panelists felt that sheep sausages without paprika had greater intensity of flavour, taste spicy, and strange smell, while sheep sausages with paprika were the most well accepted by the tasters. As to consumers, there is no preference for any type of sausage, meaning that all types of sausages have market opportunity

Diabetes insipidus in a pacient with multiple sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (ME) is a chronic progressive disease characterized by relapses of demyelination that can occur anywhere in the brain stem, spinal cord and optic nerve. Since central diabetes insipidus (DI) is mainly caused by central nervous system damage (such as trauma, surgery, tumor, infection, sarcoidosis), ME is included among its possible etiologies. However, this association is not commonly described. The clinical suspicion must be made in the presence of polyuria and polydipsia or refractory hypernatremia (in patients without free access to water) during the evolution of ME. We will describe a clinical report in which this association occurred and, after the beginning of desmopressin therapy, the clinical findings were reverted.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of fat substitution by fructooligosaccharide on physicochemical, technological and sensory characteristics of hamburgers. Five hamburgers formulations were prepared: F1 - standard (0% FOS) and the others added 1.25% (F2), 2.50% (F3), 3.75% (F4) and 5% (F5) of FOS. The Acceptability similar to standard sample was found for hamburgers with up to 3.75% prebiotic addition. However, all formulations had acceptability index above 70%. Cooking yield, moisture retention, shrinkage and fat retention have been increased as FOS was added. Substitution of fat by FOS increased carbohydrate and fiber content and decreased lipid and calorie hamburgers content. FOS addition did not change red and yellow values, however it increased brightness of product. FOS is an ingredient with potential for addition in beef hamburger, improving physicochemical and technological parameters and with little influence on sensory characteristics
