The present research aimed to evaluate the effect of culture medium pH on some growth parameter of Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.) Pedersen in vitro cultured plantlets, as well as to check whether the explant´s growth alters the culture medium pH. Four treatments consisted of different values (3.7; 5.0; 6.0 and 7.5) of culture medium pH were tested. The culture medium pH was adjusted prior to the addition of agar (6g L-1 - Merck) and autoclaving. Nodal segments from asseptic plants grown in MS medium were used as explants. From 9 to 15 days after inoculation (DAI) of nodal segments, the higher number of roots was obtained at pH 6.0, and the lower at pH 7.5. At 35 DAI, both length of the higher sprout and total number of nodal segments per plantlet were greater at about pH 6.0. At 35 DAI, roots biomass was lower at pH 3.7. On the other hand, shoots biomass was lower at pH 7.5. Fresh and dry matter of the whole plantlet was greater at pH around 6.0. In conclusion, values of culture medium pH near to 6.0, adjusted prior to autoclaving, are ideal for the growth of P. glomerata in vitro cultured plantlets. Moreover, the in vitro growth of plantlet modified significantly the culture medium pH

Complete 5-years time series of combined monthly gravity field models derived from Swarm GPS data

Since 2013, the Swarm satellite constellation has allowed us to observe the Earth's large-scale mass transport processes. We present the nearly complete time series of monthly gravity field models derived from the data collected by Swarm?s GPS receivers, from December 2013 to September 2018. These models are the result of the combination of four individual solutions, produced by the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern, the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Geodesy of the Graz University of Technology and the School of Earth Sciences of the Ohio State University, each considering a different gravity field estimation approach. The combination is done at the level of normal equations, with weights derived from Variance Component Estimation, much like what was done by the European Gravity Service for Improved Emergency Management (EGSIEM) initiative. We illustrate the geophysical signal captured by Swarm's GPS receivers over large hydrological basins, the errors represented by the variability of the models over the oceans and the agreement with GRACE and GRACE- FO. All analyses span the GRACE/GRACE-FO gap, to illustrate the importance of the Swarm satellites to bridge the absence of low-low satellite-to-satellite tracking data

Tratamento do carcinoma pulmonar de não pequenas células, doença avançada, com erlotinib em segunda e terceira linhas. A propósito de dois casos clínicos

AbstractAgents that inhibit the activity of cell membrane receptor tyrosine kinases, such as the human epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have been an attractive target because EGFR is expressed by 80% of NSCLC. Erlotinib as monotherapy in the treatment of NSCLC after failure of at least one prior chemotherapy regimen, prolonged survival and improved quality of life, although modest response rate. Women, Asiens, patients with Adenocarcinoma and never smokers, were more likely than other patients to have a response to erlotinib. This is the group of patients that most commonly have an EGFR mutation. The authors describe two cases, with important control of symptoms and increased time to progression, independently o response rate (stable disease or partial response).Rev Port Pneumol 2008; XIV (Supl 3): S53-S6

Embioptera is one of the less studied insect groups. About 400 species have been recorded worldwide, but in Brazil, where five families have been reported to occur, the group is still poorly known. The Amazon is particularly important, insofar as it harbors a great biodiversity, although many species from its entomofauna remain unreported. We report here, for the first time, the occurrence of Platyembia tessellata Ross, 2003 in Rondônia state, northern Brazil. Specimens were collected from a tree trunk near the Jaci Paraná river. An adult male was identified based on its terminalia morphology, following the species original description.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of exercise order in multicomponent training (MCT) on the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of older women. A total of 91 older women, ranging in age from 60 to 85 years, were randomly assigned to either Group A or Group B. Group A performed a warm up followed by aerobic training and resistance training, whereas Group B followed a warm up followed by resistance training and aerobic training. A control group (CG) did not engage in any exercise interventions. Statistical analysis was conducted using one-way ANOVA for between-group comparisons, and ANOVA was used for repeated measures. The results revealed that Group A demonstrated significant increases in MVC for knee extensors (KEs) between M1 and M3 (p < 0.001) and between M2 and M3 (p < 0.001). Similarly, Group A exhibited significant increases in MVC for knee flexors (KFs) between M1 and M3 (p = 0.001) and between M2 and M3 (p < 0.001). Both Group A and Group B demonstrated significant increases in MVC for elbow flexors (EFs) between M1 and M3 (p < 0.001). Furthermore, Group B showed a significant increase in hand grip strength (HGS) between M1 and M3 (p < 0.001). Overall, the findings suggest that initiating MCT with aerobic training followed by resistance training is the most effective approach for improving muscle strength in older women. This research was funded by national funds via the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. The effectiveness of pilates training interventions on older adults’ balance: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

    Get PDF
Pilates training intervention programs have gained attention as a potential approach to enhancing balance in older adults, thereby reducing the risk of falls. In light of these considerations, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to critically evaluate the existing evidence and determine the effect of Pilates training intervention programs on older adults’ balance. Materials and Methods: The literature was searched through the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception until July 2023. The primary keywords used for the literature search included “elderly” or “older adults” and “pilates training” and “balance”. Results: The systematic review through qualitative analysis showed robust evidence about the efficacy of Pilates intervention programs in improving older adults’ balance. The pooled meta-analysis of static and dynamic balance showed that eight (53%) out of a total fifteen analyzed interventions presented a significant effect of Pilates in improving the participants’ balance, without between-study heterogeneity. In addition, the meta-analysis regarding dynamic balance showed that six (67%) out of nine analyzed interventions presented a significant effect of Pilates in improving the participants’ balance, without heterogeneity between studies. Similarly, the meta-analysis regarding static balance showed that four (50%) out of eight analyzed studies presented significant effects on the older adults’ balance, where moderate between-study heterogeneity was found. Sensitivity analysis showed that three studies reduced the between-study heterogeneity (19, 17.6, and 17%), regressing from moderate to low heterogeneity, p < 0.05. Conclusions: This systematic review and meta-analysis underscores the potential of Pilates training as a valuable intervention to enhance balance in the elderly populationThis work is supported by national funding through the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., under the project UIDB/04045/2020.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
