The dynamics of Agglomeration: Evidence from Ireland and Portugal

    Get PDF
This paper analyses and compares the dynamics of agglomeration in Portuguese and Irish manufacturing industries between 1985 and 1998 implementing Dumais, Ellison and Glaeser (2002)'s methodology. Using comparable and exhaustive micro-level data sets, we find that industries tend to be subject to strong geographical mobility despite little net aggregate changes in agglomeration in both countries. When the aggregate concentration changes are decomposed into portions attributable to the different stages of the plant life cycle, we discover that births consistently play a deagglomeration role, which continues at least into the early stages of the life cycle, whereas deaths have acted to reinforce agglomeration in both countries. Nevertheless, there are some differences across countries and industries.agglomeration, path dependence, plant's life cycle, Ireland, Portugal

SIXTH GENERATION INNOVATION MODEL: DESCRIPTION OF A SUCCESS MODEL

    Get PDF
This article describes an innovation model based on concepts of continuous improvement, a key component of quality management, an internal innovative milieu and a work environment that encourages all company personnel to engage in innovation of all kinds and continuously. The features of this model identify it as a sixth-generation innovation model. First of all the article describes the different generations and highlights their main characteristics. Despite the differences between them, all emphasize radical innovations and ignore incremental innovations. This model serves for both types, but focuses its efforts on incremental innovations for creating a continuous flow of innovations, which is a means of understanding the concept of continuous improvement applied to the company as a whole. Thus, this model builds a bridge between innovation management and quality management

No entanto, no auge de sua veiculacao como instrumento de divulgacao cientifica o JP deixou de ser publicado em dezembro de 2003, quando entrava no seu 17° ano de circulacaoThe present study aims at describing and analyzing the historical track performed by the Jornal da Paulista (JP), the newspaper issued by the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP/EPM), which was put forth in the period between 1987 and 2003. The idea is to identify it as a tool for public communication in the health science in the health science area. With this purpose, the theoretical referential assumed was, among others, the proposal by Eric Landowiski, suggesting the newspaper to be studied as a semiotic subject. The analysis considered JP in the context of a global panorama of the scientific communication development from World War II on, as well as the Brazilian setting starting at the 80s, the decade following the military dictatorship. The study also intended to place JP in the context of the social, intellectual and educational implications arising from de 80’s. Once JP’s history is quite recent, the present research was also based on the Oral History technique, with a number of interviews with the most remarkable characters in that history. JP’s historical track was divided into three phases, the first one identified more closely to a newspaper meant to fulfill the need of internal communication of the Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM), as it was known at the time the UNIFESP/EPM, along with a strong institutional approach. Starting at the second phase, JP increasingly became an instrument for public communication of science, although such feature could also be slightly identified in the previous phase. Finally, at the third phase, counting basically on the involvement of the university in a movement in favor of scientific communication toward to the society, JP reached its full identification with public communication in the health science area. Nevertheless, as of December 2003, about to start its 17th year of existence and at its best moment as an instrument of public communication of science, JP editorial project was discontinued.BV UNIFESP: Teses e dissertaçõe

Towards a Multimodal Silent Speech Interface for European Portuguese

    Get PDF
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in the presence of environmental noise is still a hard problem to tackle in speech science (Ng et al., 2000). Another problem well described in the literature is the one concerned with elderly speech production. Studies (Helfrich, 1979) have shown evidence of a slower speech rate, more breaks, more speech errors and a humbled volume of speech, when comparing elderly with teenagers or adults speech, on an acoustic level. This fact makes elderly speech hard to recognize, using currently available stochastic based ASR technology. To tackle these two problems in the context of ASR for HumanComputer Interaction, a novel Silent Speech Interface (SSI) in European Portuguese (EP) is envisioned.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Effect of bird age and storage system on physical properties of eggs from brown laying hens

    Get PDF
A total of 108 eggs from a group of 100 brown laying hens housed in standard cages were analyzed. Thirty-six eggs were retired when the hens had 30 week of age, other 36 eggs were retired when the hens had 35 week of age and the remaining 36 eggs were retired five weeks afterwards. Each group of 36 eggs was radomly divided in three groups of 12 eggs. First group was analyzed at once, second group one was kept during one week in the refrigerator (5°C) and third group was kept also one week but on ambient temperature (25°C). Shell color, shell thickness, specific gravity, albumen height and Haugh units wre obtained. The bird age had significant effect on shell color and shell thickness, but the storage system had not influence on such variables. The hen age had not effect on specific gravity, but the storage system affected to this variable. Hen age and storage system had significant influence (P<0.05) on albumen height and Haugh units, and the interaction age × storage system was significant for these variables. The specific gravity had positive relations with shell thickness, yolk color, albumen height and Haugh units. It is concluded that bird age and storage system under high temperatures reduced the egg quality

Desafios Do Financiamento Das Universidades Estaduais Paulistas

    Get PDF

We investigate and compare the spatial distribution of manufacturing activity and its determinants in Belgium, Ireland, and Portugal using comparable, exhaustive micro-level data sets. We find some similarities between Portugal and Belgium, but little for Ireland. Moreover, there is some evidence that forward and backward linkages as well as dependence on natural advantages can be important determinants of agglomeration.agglomeration, spatial autocorrelation, Belgium, Ireland, Portugal

MEDIUM DENSITY PARTICLEBOARD USING POSTHARVEST SUGARCANE LEAF STRAW: EFFECT OF RESIN TYPE AND CONTENT, DENSITY AND LAYERS ARRANGEMENT

    Get PDF
Medium Density Particleboard (MDP) using sugarcane leaf straw (SLS) particles, a byproduct of the sugarcane harvesting, bonded with synthetic resins (urea-formaldehyde-UF and phenol-formaldehyde-PF) was produced and evaluated. Panels were tested for physical and mechanical properties, according to Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 14810-2 (2018). Variables of two types of resin, two resin contents, two arrangements of board layers and two board densities were analyzed in 12 treatments experimental design. The results grade the panels as Type 2, according to specifications of the Brazilian standard, for internal/dry use. They are also graded as classes M1 and M2 of the ANSI A208.1 (2016) standards for use as industrial MDP. Board density varied from 0.569 to 0.749 g/cm³. Generally, properties improved with the increase of resin content and density. Among the panels bonded with UF the best result was presented with single layer, 12% solids and density of 0.75 g/cm³. Panels glued with 12% PF showed best results of resistance and improved dimensional stability. As an exploratory study, the results are promising and further work is needed to assure the technical use of this agricultural waste, which is usually burned and seen as an environmental burden
