Using DMA to Simultaneously Acquire Young's Relaxation Modulus and Time-dependent Poisson's Ratio of a Viscoelastic Material
AbstractA method to obtain the Young's relaxation modulus and time-dependent Poisson's ratio simultaneously by using DMA is developed with the assumption of constant bulk modulus instead of constant Poisson's ratio. The constant bulk modulus is then calculated by either instantaneous response or the equilibrium response of the time-dependent Poisson's ratio. The modulating Young's moduli and characteristic times that measured by DMA are corrected analytically by using the developed formulas. The time-dependent Poisson's ratio is then obtained from the corrected modulating Young's moduli and the constant bulk modulus. As an application example, the method is applied to the DMA measurement of an epoxy molding compound (EMC). Although the correction to Young's relaxation modulus is very small, the viscoelastic Poisson's ratio varies significantly over time from 0.4 to 0.496, and can’t be assumed as a constant
Temporal Arteritis
Temporal arteritis, a chronic inflammatory vasculitis involving medium- and large-sized arteries, has rarely been reported in Asia. However, we report 2 cases, in which the patients initially presented with headache. Physical examination disclosed engorged, hard and palpable vessels in the temporal areas. Temporal-artery biopsy revealed 2 different types of arteritis: the multinucleated giant cell type and the panarteritis type without multinucleated giant cells. One patient was positive for immunoglobulin G anticardiolipin antibody. The pathologic findings of the different subsets of temporal arteritis, and the relationship between anticardiolipin antibody and the extent of vascular complications of temporal arteritis, are discussed
Improved specificity of gene silencing by siRNAs containing unlocked nucleobase analogs
siRNAs confer sequence specific and robust silencing of mRNA. By virtue of these properties, siRNAs have become therapeutic candidates for disease intervention. However, their use as therapeutic agents can be hampered by unintended off-target effects by either or both strands of the siRNA duplex. We report here that unlocked nucleobase analogs (UNAs) confer desirable properties to siRNAs. Addition of a single UNA at the 5′-terminus of the passenger strand blocks participation of the passenger strand in RISC-mediated target down-regulation with a concomitant increase in guide strand activity. Placement of a UNA in the seed region of the guide strand prevents miRNA-like off-target silencing without compromising siRNA activity. Most significantly, combined substitution of UNA at the 3′-termini of both strands, the addition of a UNA at the 5′-terminus of the passenger strand, and a single UNA in the seed region of the guide strand, reduced the global off-target events by more than 10-fold compared to unmodified siRNA. The reduction in off-target events was specific to UNA placement in the siRNA, with no apparent new off-target events. Taken together, these results indicate that when strategically placed, UNA substitutions have important implications for the design of safe and effective siRNA-based therapeutics
Learning Scope of Python Coding Using Immersive Virtual Reality
Programming is a highly sought-after technical skill in the job market,
but there are limited avenues available for training competent and proficient programmers. This research focuses on evaluating an immersive virtual reality (VR)
application that has been introduced in the field of Python learning, which uses
the interaction technique and a user interface, allowing the novice to engage in
VR learning. 30 participants were recruited for the evaluation purpose and they
are divided into two groups--15 for Experiment I, and 15 for Experiment II. A
questionnaire to evaluate the user interface was done in Experiment I, and a questionnaire to evaluate the novice’s acceptance of the VR application was given to
the participants in Experiment II. Furthermore, interviews were conducted to collect detailed feedback from all the participants. From the results, it can be noted
that the implemented interaction designs in this VR application are adequate.
However, more interaction techniques can be integrated to increase the degree of
immersive experience of the user in the application. Besides, the interface of the
application is considered adequate and reasonable. Nevertheless, there is room
for improvement in the aspect of usability and provide a higher level user experience. The novices’ acceptance level of the new proposed learning method is
low; this might be due to the users’ fear of change-- a normal human behaviour
in embracing new things in life. Therefore, a larger sample size is proposed to
further investigate the novice’s acceptance of the new learning method by using
an improved version of the VR application
Myocardial Motion Analysis for Determination of Tei-Index of Human Heart
The Tei index, an important indicator of heart function, lacks a direct method to compute because it is difficult to directly evaluate the isovolumic contraction time (ICT) and isovolumic relaxation time (IRT) from which the Tei index can be obtained. In this paper, based on the proposed method of accurately measuring the cardiac cycle physical phase, a direct method of calculating the Tei index is presented. The experiments based on real heart medical images show the effectiveness of this method. Moreover, a new method of calculating left ventricular wall motion amplitude is proposed and the experiments show its satisfactory performance
New Bending Algorithm for Field-Driven Molecular Dynamics
A field-driven bending method is introduced in this paper according to the coordinate transformation between straight and curved coordinates. This novel method can incorporate with the periodic boundary conditions in analysis along axial, bending, and transverse directions. For the case of small bending, the bending strain can be compatible with the beam theory. Consequently, it can be regarded as a generalized SLLOD algorithm. In this work, the bulk copper beam under bending is analyzed first by the novel bending method. The bending stress estimated here is well consistent to the results predicted by the beam theory. Moreover, a hollow nanowire is also analyzed. The zigzag traces of atomic stress and the corresponding 422 common neighbor type can be observed near the inner surface of the hollow nanowire, which values are increased with an increase of time. It can be seen that the novel bending method with periodic boundary condition along axial direction can provide a more physical significance than the traditional method with fixed boundary condition

Combining poly-arginine with the hydrophobic counter-anion 4-(1-pyrenyl)-butyric acid for protein transduction in transdermal delivery
Topical therapy is the most favored form of treatment for whitening against hyperpigmentation and sunburn because it lends itself to self-administration, patient compliance, and absence of systemic adverse effects. However, transdermal delivery of hydrophilic chemicals is difficult. The main purpose of this study is to develop a delivering system of hydrophilic drugs and proteins across the skin. Hydroquinone (HQ), a well-known tyrosinase inhibitor and antimelanogenesis compound, and enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) were fused with eleven poly-arginine (11R). Both HQ-11R and EGFP-11R were efficiently delivered in B16 cells, a mouse melanoma cell line. HQ-11R was as effective as HQ alone at inhibiting melanin synthesis in B16 cells. EGFP-11R was efficiently delivered into cells of the epidermis with 4-(1-pyrenyl)-butyric acid (PB), a counteranion bearing an aromatic hydrophobic moiety, in vivo, but EGFP alone or EGFP-11R without PB was not. Finally, topical application of HQ-11R with PB significantly inhibited UV irradiation-induced pigmentation in guinea pigs compared with HQ alone. These results suggest that topical therapy using poly-arginine in combination with PB is useful for the delivery of hydrophilic drugs and proteins by the transdermal route
