    Challenges and opportunities associated with neglected tropical disease and water, sanitation and hygiene intersectoral integration programs.

    BACKGROUND: Recent research has suggested that water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions, in addition to mass drug administration (MDA), are necessary for controlling and eliminating many neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the integration of NTD and WASH programming in order to identify barriers to widespread integration and make recommendations about ideal conditions and best practices critical to future integrated programs. METHODS: Twenty-four in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with key stakeholders in the global NTD and WASH sectors to identify barriers and ideal conditions in programmatic integration. RESULTS: The most frequently mentioned barriers to WASH and NTD integration included: 1) differing programmatic objectives in the two sectors, including different indicators and metrics; 2) a disproportionate focus on mass drug administration; 3) differences in the scale of funding; 4) siloed funding; and 5) a lack of coordination and information sharing between the two sectors. Participants also conveyed that a more holistic approach was needed if future integration efforts are to be scaled-up. The most commonly mentioned requisite conditions included: 1) education and advocacy; 2) development of joint indicators; 3) increased involvement at the ministerial level; 4) integrated strategy development; 5) creating task forces or committed partnerships; and 6) improved donor support. CONCLUSIONS: Public health practitioners planning to integrate NTD and WASH programs can apply these results to create conditions for more effective programs and mitigate barriers to success. Donor agencies should consider funding more integration efforts to further test the proof of principle, and additional support from national and local governments is recommended if integration efforts are to succeed. Intersectoral efforts that include the development of shared indicators and objectives are needed to foster conditions conducive to expanding effective integration programs

    Wearable Knee Health Rehabilitation Assessment using Acoustical Emissions

    Each year, approximately 200,000 Americans endure anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, and 100,000 reconstructive procedures are conducted to repair the injured knees (1). The injury itself, and the long rehabilitation process that follows, can majorly disrupt the quality of life for these Americans through missed workdays, reduction of overall physical activity, and increased risk of re-injury in future activities. Wearable technologies for quantifying the state of rehabilitation, and providing feedback to the user regarding which activities or intensities of activities are safe to perform at any given time, could potentially help accelerate the rehabilitation process as well as reduce the risk of re-injury. Our lab has developed a novel, wearable sensing system based on miniature piezoelectric contact microphones for measuring the acoustical emissions from the knee during movements such as unloaded flexion / extension, sit-to-stand, and walking activities. The system consists of two Knowles BU-23173 contact microphones (Knowles, Itasca, IL) positioned on the medial and lateral sides of the patella, connected to custom, analog pre-amplifier circuits and a microcontroller for digitization and data storage on a secure digital (SD) card. In addition to the acoustical sensing, the system includes two integrated inertial measurement sensors including accelerometer and gyroscope modalities to enable joint angle calculations; these sensors, with digital outputs, are connected directly to the same microcontroller via serial peripheral interface (SPI). The system provides low noise, accurate joint acoustical emission and angle measurements in a wearable form factor, and has several hours of battery life. We have also taken measurements from healthy subjects, and athletes following acute ACL tear, to determine initial features from these acoustical emissions that are associated with injured versus healthy joints. We have found that the main acoustic clicks during particular motions occurred at consistent joint angles for healthy subjects based on intraclass correlation coefficient analysis (ICC(1,1) = 0.94 and ICC(1,k) = 0.99) (2). For one subject with an ACL tear, we found that the consistency of the joint acoustical emissions was lower for the injured knee as compared to the healthy knee in the recording immediately following the injury (\u3c 7 days), and improved following six months of rehabilitation. We envision using the wearable system we have recently completed to conduct further experiments with subjects following acute ACL tears, and tracking the progress of the rehabilitation while simultaneously measuring acoustical emissions in the context of particular movements. This data will then serve as a foundation for creating subject-specific algorithms for assessing rehabilitation and providing feedback to the users

    Desde hace más de 5 años las y los viajeros que visitan el continente antártico durante los meses de verano (noviembre - marzo) ayudan a las y los investigadores a monitorear cambios en la comunidad fitoplanctónica en relación al derretimiento glaciar. La Península Antártica es una región que está experimentando cambios rápidos debidos al calentamiento global. El fitoplancton (microalgas) es la base de la red alimenticia marina y es ignorado por la sociedad debido a su tamaño microscópico. A su vez, el turismo antártico es una industria actualmente en aumento y diversificación. Los proyectos de ciencia ciudadana son una excelente herramienta para educar al turismo en cuanto a conservación e impactos del cambio climático. El proyecto FjordPhyto nace como una colaboración entre investigadores (principalmente de Estados Unidos y Argentina) con la Asociación Internacional de Operadores de Tours Antárticos (IAATO por sus siglas en inglés). Este proyecto de ciencia ciudadana aprovecha las embarcaciones turísticas como plataformas para tomar muestras e involucrar a la comunidad viajera en el legado de la investigación polar. El proyecto FjordPhyto busca crear concientización en las y los turistas sobre estas comunidades microscópicas, que incluso tienen la oportunidad de observar con un microscopio a bordo.Facultad de Informátic

    SNAPSHOT USA 2019 : a coordinated national camera trap survey of the United States

All rights reserved.With the accelerating pace of global change, it is imperative that we obtain rapid inventories of the status and distribution of wildlife for ecological inferences and conservation planning. To address this challenge, we launched the SNAPSHOT USA project, a collaborative survey of terrestrial wildlife populations using camera traps across the United States. For our first annual survey, we compiled data across all 50 states during a 14-week period (17 August - 24 November of 2019). We sampled wildlife at 1509 camera trap sites from 110 camera trap arrays covering 12 different ecoregions across four development zones. This effort resulted in 166,036 unique detections of 83 species of mammals and 17 species of birds. All images were processed through the Smithsonian's eMammal camera trap data repository and included an expert review phase to ensure taxonomic accuracy of data, resulting in each picture being reviewed at least twice. The results represent a timely and standardized camera trap survey of the USA. All of the 2019 survey data are made available herein. We are currently repeating surveys in fall 2020, opening up the opportunity to other institutions and cooperators to expand coverage of all the urban-wild gradients and ecophysiographic regions of the country. Future data will be available as the database is updated at eMammal.si.edu/snapshot-usa, as well as future data paper submissions. These data will be useful for local and macroecological research including the examination of community assembly, effects of environmental and anthropogenic landscape variables, effects of fragmentation and extinction debt dynamics, as well as species-specific population dynamics and conservation action plans.     Mammal responses to global changes in human activity vary by trophic group and landscape

    Wildlife must adapt to human presence to survive in the Anthropocene, so it is critical to understand species responses to humans in different contexts. We used camera trapping as a lens to view mammal responses to changes in human activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across 163 species sampled in 102 projects around the world, changes in the amount and timing of animal activity varied widely. Under higher human activity, mammals were less active in undeveloped areas but unexpectedly more active in developed areas while exhibiting greater nocturnality. Carnivores were most sensitive, showing the strongest decreases in activity and greatest increases in nocturnality. Wildlife managers must consider how habituation and uneven sensitivity across species may cause fundamental differences in human–wildlife interactions along gradients of human influence.Peer reviewe

    This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected.
