Naerisarang (내리사랑), Or an Elder’s Love for the Young: Vietnamese and Filipina Marriage Migrants as Preservers of the Korean Patriline

The idea of maternal citizenship and reproductive duties as a way of both assimilating and othering Filipina and Vietnamese foreign wives in South Korea plays out in both public multiculturalist discourse and within household discussions. Ethnic nationalism, neo-Confucianism, and government/media discourses have helped to structure how migrant mothers and their families are portrayed and how they portray themselves. I argue that even as state and civil society pressures marriage migrants from Southeast Asia to become “Korean” mothers and daughters-in-law, migrants and their families influence how such an identity is defined by taking advantage of the media’s influence and the government’s authority within these roles and utilizing the resources they receive to improve their status in Korea. In short, I examine how Filipina and Vietnamese marriage migrants reproduce and raise “Korean” children, integrate them into Korean society, while at the same time, using their position in society to maintain and introduce to their children the traditions and customs of their home country. I use data collected from participant observation and interviews with these families and organization members in order to examine how national and family identity is shaped by marriage migrants for themselves and for their children while at the same time having to work within severe constraints

The Role of Friendships Among Latino Male Adolescent Immigrants Who Are Unauthorized

It is estimated that the United States is home to three-quarters of a million immigrant Latina/o youth who do not have proper authorization to be in the country (Passell, 2011). Given their unauthorized status these youth face a bevy of constraining factors, both proximal and distal. Furthermore, migration is typically characterized by a loss of social networks and cultural practices in exchange for disorienting social and cultural changes in a new land (Hernandez & McGoldrick, 1999). The importance of friendships during adolescence, has been well documented across cultures (Hartup, 1996). While a few studies have demonstrated the positive role friendships play in educational attainment for unauthorized Latina/o youth (e.g..Gonzáles, 2010; Perreira, Harris, & Lee, 2007), there exists little understanding of the role of friendships among unauthorized Latino adolescents. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the role of friendships in the lives of this growing and vulnerable population: Latino male adolescent immigrants who are unauthorized. The study employed grounded theory research methodology (Strauss & Corbin, 1992) to examine friendships from the perspective of such youth. Twelve adolescents participated in individual interviews during which they were invited to discuss their conceptualizations of, and experiences with friendships, pre- and post-migration. Results revealed that friends: (a) are important because they provide advice and help youth navigate the new environment, (b) help youth feel part of a group, (c) influence them in both positive and negative ways, and (c) are not completely trusted and family is seen as the primary source of emotional support. Additionally, participants indicated that support and trust are critical to friendships, and that friendships are tested during difficult times. Also, their parents gave them advice to not fully trust friends, and when queried they stated that they would provide similar advice to recently arrived immigrants. Limitations and implications of the present study as well as future directions are also discussed

Climate change e geopolitical accountability: a spacebusiness perspective at ghgsa

    Get PDF
This work examines the relationship between private companies and geopolitical problems through a case study setting. The business case of GHGSat demonstrates how the new Space business frontier is helping society tackle accountability problems for climate change agreements. First it explains a brief history of space ventures and how the principal determinants of success have been changing towards a more market-friendly environment and fostering entrepreneurial solutions for social problems. It sets out the context of the climate change challenge and how the diplomatic and geopolitical path is struggling with accountability and monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions by countries and companies

In an increasingly integrated and challenging world, companies require administrators whoare able to cope with a globalized and highly competitive business environment. In thatsense, the objective of the research is to establish the competences of the administrator’sgraduate profile to perform in a global context. To this aim, a qualitative design researchof documentary type was developed, using as a source of information scientific papersindexed in the Google Academic database. An important finding is that genericcompetences such as teamwork, strategic leadership, adaptation to change, technologymanagement and ability to interact in multicultural environments, among others, are morevalued by employers than specific competences.

Influence of pre-Andean history over Andean foreland deformation: structural styles in the Malargüe fold-and-thrust belt at 35ºS, Andes of Argentina

    Get PDF
We present the first complete balanced cross-section of the Argentinean Andes at 35ºS. Based on an extensive field survey and limited sub-surface information, we constructed a structural model in which both the tectonic inversion of Mesozoic normal faults and the formation of Cenozoic Andean thrusts play a role in the deformation. We obtained a shortening of 26.2 km, equivalent to 22% of the initial length. This value is lower than previous estimates obtained from partial cross-sections using non-inversion structural models. Comparison of our results with a geophysical model of the crust indicates that: (i) crustal thickness was not constant across the orogen before Andean shortening, but a thick (~45 km) crustal block was interpreted? in the west as a remnant of a Late Paleozoic orogeny, and a thinner sector (~32 km) was located in the east as a result of Mesozoic stretching; and (ii) the structural model presented in this work is more consistent with the regional shortening and crustal thickness trends than models which do not take into account tectonic inversion.Fil: Mescua, Jose Francisco. We thank Tony Lanzirotti and Matt Newville for assistance with μ-XANES analyses at the GeoSoilEnviroCars (Sector 13), Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. The Supplementary Material for this article can be found online at: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2020.00029/full#supplementary-materialThe oxidation state of the Earth’s mantle and its partial melting products exert a key control on the behavior and distribution of sulfur and chalcophile and siderophile elements between the mantle and crust, underpinning models of ore deposit formation. Whether the oxidized nature of magmas is inherited from the asthenospheric mantle source or acquired during ascent and differentiation is vigorously debated, limiting our understanding of the mechanisms of extraction of sulfur and metals from the mantle. Here, we focused on the redox-sensitive behavior of sulfur in apatite crystallized from quenched alkaline basaltic melts preserved within a peridotite xenolith from the El Deseado Massif auriferous province in southern Patagonia. We took advantage of this unique setting to elucidate the redox evolution of melts during their ascent through the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and grasp the inner workings of the Earth’s mantle during gold metallogenesis. Our data reveal that an initially reduced silicate melt (ΔFMQ −2.2 to −1.2) was oxidized to ΔFMQ between 0 and 1.2 during percolation and interaction with the surrounding peridotite wall-rock (ΔFMQ 0 to +0.8). This process triggered changes in sulfur speciation and solubility in the silicate melt, boosting the potential of the melt to scavenge ore metals such as gold. We suggest that large redox gradients resulting from the interaction between ascending melts and the surrounding mantle can potentially modify the oxidation state of primitive melts and enhance their metallogenic fertility. Among other factors including an enriched metal source and favorable geodynamic conditions, redox gradients in the mantle may exert a first-order control on the global-scale localization of crustal provinces endowed with gold deposits. This study was funded by the Iniciativa Científica Milenio through Millennium Nucleus for Metal Tracing along Subduction Grant NC130065.
