    New conditions for finite-time stability of impulsive dynamical systems via piecewise quadratic functions

    In this paper, the use of time-varying piecewise quadratic functions is investigated to characterize the finite-time stability of state-dependent impulsive dynamical linear systems. Finite-time stability defines the behavior of a dynamic system over a bounded time interval. More precisely, a system is said to be finite-time stable if, given a set of initial conditions, its state vector does not exit a predefined domain for a certain finite interval of time. This paper presents new sufficient conditions for finite-time stability based on time-varying piecewise quadratic functions. These conditions can be reformulated as a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities that can be efficiently solved through convex optimization solvers. Dif ferent numerical analysis are included in order to prove that the presented conditions are able to improve the results presented so far in the literature

    The mobility of Atlantic baric depressions leading to intense precipitation over Italy: a preliminary statistical analysis

    International audienceThe speed of Atlantic surface depressions, occurred during the autumn and winter seasons and that lead to intense precipitation over Italy from 1951 to 2000, was investigated. Italy was divided into 5 regions as documented in previous climatological studies (based on Principal Component Analysis). Intense precipitation events were selected on the basis of in situ rain gauge data and clustered according to the region that they hit. For each intense precipitation event we tried to identify an associated surface depression and we tracked it, within a large domain covering the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions, from its formation to cyclolysis in order to estimate its speed. "Depression speeds" were estimated with 6-h resolution and clustered into slow and non-slow classes by means of a threshold, coinciding with the first quartile of speed distribution and depression centre speeds were associated with their positions. Slow speeds occurring over an area including Italy and the western Mediterranean basin showed frequencies higher than 25%, for all the Italian regions but one. The probability of obtaining by chance the observed more than 25% success rate was estimated by means of a binomial distribution. The statistical reliability of the result is confirmed for only one region. For Italy as a whole, results were confirmed at 95% confidence level. Stability of the statistical inference, with respect to errors in estimating depression speed and changes in the threshold of slow depressions, was analysed and essentially confirmed the previous results

    Treating Thalassemia Patients with Luspatercept: An Expert Opinion Based on Current Evidence

    Luspatercept has recently been approved for the treatment of beta-thalassemia and its use in clinical practice has been increasing. As it is the first erythroid maturation drug available for this diagnosis, the expertise about its use is still limited. To address this point, and to promote awareness and guide the clinical use of luspatercept in beta-thalassemia, this paper was developed as a consensus by experts from the Italian Society of Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies (SITE). After a brief presentation of the core features of luspatercept, a comprehensive set of questions is addressed, covering relevant aspects for the practical management of this new therapeutic option

    Difractómetro de grandes componentes para el reactor RA-10

    En CNEA se encuentra en ejecución el ?Proyecto RA-10? para la construcción de un reactor multipropósito. Entre los objetivos principales del RA-10 está la provisión de haces de neutrones para la realización de experimentos dentro de un amplio espectro de disciplinas científicas y tecnológicas. Por sus múltiples aplicaciones, la difracción de neutrones es una de las técnicas neutrónicas más populares. El gran poder de penetración de los neutrones (del orden de cm) permite investigar el interior de un objeto sin necesidad de cortarlo. Así es posible estudiar en forma no-destructiva objetos macroscópicos y cuantificar la variación espacial de las fases cristalinas que lo componen, las orientaciones de esos cristalitos, y su nivel de deformación plástica y elástica.En particular, es posible determinar las tensiones internas en componentes mecánicos de gran porte, un tema de gran importancia dentro de la industria metal-mecánica. En este caso los planos cristalinos son utilizados como extensómetros microscópicos, y las pequeñas variaciones que existen en las distancias interplanares para las distintas direcciones de un objeto son utilizados para cuantificar el tensor completo de deformación elástica.La posibilidad de realizar experimentos de difracción sobre objetos intactos ha despertado también gran interés dentro de la comunidad dedicada al estudio y la conservación del patrimonio cultural.Presentamos aquí el diseño básico de un difractómetro para el estudio de grandes componentes, para ser instalado en un haz térmico de la sala del reactor RA-10, es decir, directamente contra la pared del mismo.Se propone equiparlo con dos monocromadores diferentes, para poder optar entre mayor intensidad o mayor resolución. Los monocromadores propuestos son doblemente curvados, a fin de enfocar el haz sobre la posición de medición y optimizar la resolución del equipo para la reflexión de mayor interés. Un componente central del instrumento es el portamuestras, consistente en una mesa con capacidad de posicionar componentes de hasta ~300kg de peso con una precisión de ~20um, una resolución espacial de ~1mm, y rotar los mismos a fin de explorar distintas direcciones. Presentaremos además avances realizados sobre un prototipo a menor escala, que comparte algunas características del diseño propuesto, que será instalado en el reactor RA-6 del Centro Atómico Bariloche.Fil: Santisteban, Javier Roberto.     Therapy of age-related exudative macular degeneration with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs: An Italian real life study

    Aim: To evaluate the real utilization of ranibizumab and aflibercept in the daily management of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated at the Eye Clinic of Campania University L.Vanvitelli. Background: Therapy with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor represents the gold standard in wet age-related macular degeneration. There are nonreal life italian studies of this therapy in the literature. Objective: To analyze in our sample the post-therapy variations of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central retinal thickness (CRT) observed at the end of a 12-month follow-up period. Methods: This real-life study analyzes 109 patients that underwent monthly checks for the first 4 months and then every 2 months until the end of the 12-month follow-up. The sample was first analyzed in its entirety, subsequently subdivided into 3 groups based on baseline BCVA, age, and the number of intravitreal injections performed, in order to identify possible predictive elements of the anti-VEGF response. Results: On average, patients underwent 4.16 ± 1.58 intravitreal anti-VEGF injections in 1 year. At the end of the 12-month follow-up, the patients’ average BCVA increased from 33.01 letters to 33.75 letters (+0.74 ± 9,4 letters), while the average CRT decreased from 346.86 µm to 265.39 µm (-81.47 ± 121 µm). Conclusion: The study shows the efficacy of anti-VEGF therapy in the stabilization of BCVA in nAMD, confirming the differences in visual outcomes compared to clinical trials, mainly for economic-organizational reasons

    Sex-dependent effects of developmental lead exposure in Wistar rats: Evidence from behavioral and molecular correlates

    Lead (Pb) exposure in early life affects brain development resulting in cognitive and behavioral deficits. Epidemiologic and experimental evidence of sex as an effect modifier of developmental Pb exposure is emerging. In the present study, we investigated Pb effects on behavior and mechanisms of neuroplasticity in the hippocampus and potential sex differences. To this aim, dams were exposed, from one month pre-mating to offspring weaning, to Pb via drinking water at 5 mg/kg body weight per day. In the offspring of both sexes, the longitudinal assessment of motor, emotional, and cognitive end points was performed. We also evaluated the expression and synaptic distribution of N-methyl-D-Aspartate receptor (NMDA) and ff-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor subunits at post-natal day (pnd) 23 and 70 in the hippocampus. Neonatal motor patterns and explorative behavior in offspring were affected in both sexes. Pb effects in emotional response and memory retention were observed in adult females only, preceded by increased levels of GluN2A and GluA1 subunits at the post-synapse at pnd 23. These data suggest that Pb exposure during development affects glutamatergic receptors distribution at the post-synaptic spine in females. These effects may contribute to alterations in selected behavioral domains

    Early hemispherectomy in catastrophic epilepsy A neuro-cognitive and epileptic long-term follow-up

    SummaryThe authors report their experience about a neuro-cognitive and epileptic long-term follow-up of children with catastrophic epilepsy treated with hemispherectomy in the first 5 years of life.Nineteen children with resistant epilepsy that significantly interfered with their neuro-cognitive development underwent hemispherectomy within 5 years of life (mean: 2 years, 3 months; range: 5 months to 5 years). All patients were assessed before surgery and after, at least at the end of the follow-up (mean: 6 years and 6 months; range: 2–11 years and 2 months) with a full clinical examination including motor ability and functional status evaluation as well as behaviour observation, neuroimaging and an ictal/interictal prolonged scalp video-EEG.A seizure-free outcome was obtained in 73.7% of patients. Gross motility generally improved and cognitive competence did not worsen, with an evident progress in two cases.Consistently with previous reports, evolution was worse in cortical dysplasia than in progressive or acquired vascular cerebropathies. The excellent epileptic outcome and the lack of developmental deterioration in comparison with other more aged series seem to suggest a possible better evolution in earlier surgery treatment. To confirm this suggestion, however, further experience with larger series is needed

    First Finding of Ostreopsis cf. ovata Toxins in Marine Aerosols

    Since the late 1990s, a respiratory syndrome has been repetitively observed in humans concomitant with Ostreopsis spp. blooms (mainly O. cf. ovata) in the Mediterranean area. Previous studies have demonstrated that O. cf. ovata produces analogues of palytoxin (ovatoxins and a putative palytoxin), one of the most potent marine toxins. On the basis of the observed association between O. cf. ovata blooms, respiratory illness in people, and detection of palytoxin complex in algal samples, toxic aerosols, containing Ostreopsis cells and/or the toxins they produce, were postulated to be the cause of human illness. A small scale monitoring study of marine aerosol carried out along the Tuscan coasts (Italy) in 2009 and 2010 is reported. Aerosols were collected concomitantly with O. cf. ovata blooms, and they were analyzed by both PCR assays and LC-HRMS. The results, besides confirming the presence of O. cf. ovata cells, demonstrated for the first time the occurrence of ovatoxins in the aerosol at levels of 2.4 pg of ovatoxins per liter of air. Given the lack of toxicological data on palytoxins by inhalation exposure, our results are only a first step toward a more comprehensiveunderstanding of the Ostreopsis-related respiratory syndrome
