    Drying in the rotating-pulsed fluidized bed

    There are particulate materials that are cohesive when wet. Although they are Geldart's group A dry powders, they show difficulties in fluidizing in a conventional fluidized bed, which could be diminished by modifying the fluidization equipment. Therefore, the objective of this work was to study the drying of cohesive particulate material using a rotating-pulsed fluidized bed. The material used in the drying study was 2-hydroxybenzoic acid because its cohesive forces are stronger when wet. The drying experiments were carried out according to the following parameters: frequency of disk (5 and 15 Hz), initial moisture content of the material (high and low) and gas temperature at 85°C. From the drying kinetic curves and visual observations during the experiments, it could be concluded that the rotating-pulsed fluidized bed is an alternative for the processing of cohesive solids that preserves the final quality of the dry solids.95100Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq

    Teaching mathematics at distance: A challenge for universities

    The focus of this research is how Sicilian state university mathematics professors faced the challenge of teaching via distance education during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the pandemic entered our lives suddenly, the professors found themselves having to lecture using an e-learning platform that they had never used before, and for which they could not receive training due to the health emergency. In addition to the emotional aspects related to the particular situation of the pandemic, there are two aspects to consider when teaching mathematics at a distance. The first is related to the fact that at university level, lecturers generally teach mathematics in a formal way, using many symbols and formulas that they are used to writing. The second aspect is that the way mathematics is taught is also related to the students to whom the teaching is addressed. In fact, not only online, but also in face-to-face modality, the teaching of mathematics to students on the mathematics degree course involves a different approach to lessons (as well as to the choice of topics to explain) than teaching mathematics in another degree course. In order to investigate how the Sicilian State university mathematics professors taught mathematics at distance, a questionnaire was prepared and administered one month after the beginning of the lockdown in Italy. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were made, which allowed us to observe the way that university professors have adapted to the new teaching modality: they started to appropriate new artifacts (writing tablets, mathematical software, e-learning platform) to replicate their face-to-face teaching modality, mostly maintaining their blackboard teacher status. Their answers also reveal their beliefs related to teaching mathematics at university level, noting what has been an advantageous or disadvantageous for them in distance teaching

    An improved method on stimulated T-lymphocytes to functionally characterize novel and known LDLR mutations.

    The main causes of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) are mutations in LDL receptor (LDLR) gene. Functional studies are necessary to demonstrate the LDLR function impairment caused by mutations and would be useful as a diagnostic tool if they allow discrimination between FH patients and controls. In order to identify the best method to detect LDLR activity, we compared continuous Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed B-lymphocytes and mitogen stimulated T-lymphocytes. In addition, we characterized both novel and known mutations in the LDLR gene. T-lymphocytes and EBV-transformed B-lymphocytes were obtained from peripheral blood of 24 FH patients and 24 control subjects. Functional assays were performed by incubation with fluorescent LDL followed by flow cytometry analysis. Residual LDLR activity was calculated normalizing fluorescence for the mean fluorescence of controls. With stimulated T-lymphocytes we obtained a better discrimination capacity between controls and FH patients compared with EBV-transformed B-lymphocytes as demonstrated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis (the areas under the curve are 1.000 and 0.984 respectively; P < 0.0001 both). The characterization of LDLR activity through T-lymphocytes is more simple and faster than the use of EBV-transformed B-lymphocytes and allows a complete discrimination between controls and FH patients. Therefore the evaluation of residual LDLR activity could be helpful not only for mutation characterization but also for diagnostic purposes

    MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF THE DRYING CURVES OF FOXTAIL MILLET SEEDS IN SPOUTED BED

    In order to provide a contribution to future studies of foxtail millet (Setaria italica), the drying kinetics of the seeds was investigated at three different temperatures: 44, 65 and 86°C. The seeds of S. italica with a moisture equal to 30% in dry basis were dried in a conical-cylindrical spouted bed during an interval of 132 min. Some empirical mathematical models were selected to describe the experimental drying kinetics data (Lewis, Henderson and Pabis, Page, Diffusion approach, Midilli and Wang and Singh) and the best models were chosen according to the statistical tests results (coefficient of determination, mean relative percent deviation, mean square root error and residue distribution), using the software Statistica® 7.0 and applying the Quasi-Newton method. Only the decreasing rate period was observed in the drying kinetic curves, indicating that the removal of moisture content was preferably by the diffusion mechanism, which is a characteristic behavior of fibrous products, like the agricultural products. The models of Diffusion Aproach, Page and Midilli were the most suitable to describe the experimental drying curves

    Evaluation of the performance of Dutch Lipid Clinic Network score in an Italian FH population: The LIPIGEN study

    Background and aims: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited disorder characterized by high levels of blood cholesterol from birth and premature coronary heart disease. Thus, the identification of FH patients is crucial to prevent or delay the onset of cardiovascular events, and the availability of a tool helping with the diagnosis in the setting of general medicine is essential to improve FH patient identification.Methods: This study evaluated the performance of the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) score in FH patients enrolled in the LIPIGEN study, an Italian integrated network aimed at improving the identification of patients with genetic dyslipidaemias, including FH.Results: The DLCN score was applied on a sample of 1377 adults (mean age 42.9 +/- 14.2 years) with genetic diagnosis of FH, resulting in 28.5% of the sample classified as probable FH and 37.9% as classified definite FH. Among these subjects, 43.4% had at least one missing data out of 8, and about 10.0% had 4 missing data or more. When analyzed based on the type of missing data, a higher percentage of subjects with at least 1 missing data in the clinical history or physical examination was classified as possible FH (DLCN score 3-5). We also found that using real or estimated pre-treatment LDL-C levels may significantly modify the DLCN score.Conclusions: Although the DLCN score is a useful tool for physicians in the diagnosis of FH, it may be limited by the complexity to retrieve all the essential information, suggesting a crucial role of the clinical judgement in the identification of FH subjects
