Quantum tomography for collider physics: Illustrations with lepton pair production
Quantum tomography is a method to experimentally extract all that is
observable about a quantum mechanical system. We introduce quantum tomography
to collider physics with the illustration of the angular distribution of lepton
pairs. The tomographic method bypasses much of the field-theoretic formalism to
concentrate on what can be observed with experimental data, and how to
characterize the data. We provide a practical, experimentally-driven guide to
model-independent analysis using density matrices at every step. Comparison
with traditional methods of analyzing angular correlations of inclusive
reactions finds many advantages in the tomographic method, which include
manifest Lorentz covariance, direct incorporation of positivity constraints,
exhaustively complete polarization information, and new invariants free from
frame conventions. For example, experimental data can determine the
of the production process, which is a
model-independent invariant that measures the degree of coherence of the
subprocess. We give reproducible numerical examples and provide a supplemental
standalone computer code that implements the procedure. We also highlight a
property of that guarantees in a least-squares type fit
that a local minimum of a statistic will be a global minimum: There
are no isolated local minima. This property with an automated implementation of
positivity promises to mitigate issues relating to multiple minima and
convention-dependence that have been problematic in previous work on angular
distributions.Comment: 25 pages, 3 figure
Effects of Particle Size in Forage Samples for Protein Breakdown Studies
Coupling ruminal processes of hydrolysis and synthesis continues to be a research issue where more progress is needed. This requires the development of good protein assessment methods, particularly when representing the breakdown processes that occur in fresh pastures eaten by herbivores. Laboratory analyses need to deal with small and homogeneous samples, but the mechanical reduction of particle size may not reflect the actual digestion kinetics occurring when the original fresh forage is consumed. Such physical traits may alter the release of non-structural compounds and the penetration of microbial enzymes (Boudon et al., 2002). The objective of this work was to assess in fresh samples the effect of reducing particle size upon the in vitro breakdown of proteins during the early rumen fermentation period
Differential antifungal activity of human and cryptococcal melanins with structural discrepancies
Indexación: Scopus.Melanin is a pigment found in all biological kingdoms, and plays a key role in protection against ultraviolet radiation, oxidizing agents, and ionizing radiation damage. Melanin exerts an antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and parasites. We demonstrated an antifungal activity of synthetic and human melanin against Candida sp. The members of the Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii species complexes are capsulated yeasts, which cause cryptococcosis. For both species melanin is an important virulence factor. To evaluate if cryptococcal and human melanins have antifungal activity against Cryptococcus species they both were assayed for their antifungal properties and physico-chemical characters. Melanin extracts from human hair and different strains of C. neoformans (n = 4) and C. gattii (n = 4) were investigated. The following minimum inhibitory concentrations were found for different melanins against C. neoformans and C. gattii were (average/range): 13.7/(7.8-15.6) and 19.5/(15.6-31.2) μg/mL, respectively, for human melanin; 273.4/(125- > 500) and 367.2/(125.5- > 500) μg/mL for C. neoformans melanin and 125/(62.5-250) and 156.2/(62-250) μg/mL for C. gattii melanin. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy we observed that human melanin showed a compact conformation and cryptococcal melanins exposed an amorphous conformation. Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed some differences in the signals related to C-C bonds of the aromatic ring of the melanin monomers. High Performance Liquid Chromatography established differences in the chromatograms of fungal melanins extracts in comparison with human and synthetic melanin, particularly in the retention time of the main compound of fungal melanin extracts and also in the presence of minor unknown compounds. On the other hand, MALDI-TOF-MS analysis showed slight differences in the spectra, specifically the presence of a minor intensity ion in synthetic and human melanin, as well as in some fungal melanin extracts. We conclude that human melanin is more active than the two fungal melanins against Cryptococcus. Although some physico-chemical differences were found, they do not explain the differences in the antifungal activity against Cryptococcus of human and cryptococcal melanins. More detailed studies on the structure should be considered to associate structure and antifungal activity.https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmicb.2017.01292/ful

On the geometry of four qubit invariants
The geometry of four-qubit entanglement is investigated. We replace some of
the polynomial invariants for four-qubits introduced recently by new ones of
direct geometrical meaning. It is shown that these invariants describe four
points, six lines and four planes in complex projective space . For
the generic entanglement class of stochastic local operations and classical
communication they take a very simple form related to the elementary symmetric
polynomials in four complex variables. Moreover, their magnitudes are
entanglement monotones that fit nicely into the geometric set of -qubit ones
related to Grassmannians of -planes found recently. We also show that in
terms of these invariants the hyperdeterminant of order 24 in the four-qubit
amplitudes takes a more instructive form than the previously published
expressions available in the literature. Finally in order to understand two,
three and four-qubit entanglement in geometric terms we propose a unified
setting based on furnished with a fixed quadric.Comment: 19 page
