    Influence of shock-bubble and bubble-bubble interactions on the collapse of a cluster of bubbles

    The present work is concerned with direct numerical simulations for the shock-bubble and bubble-bubble interactions using the improved ghost fluid method in which the Riemann solutions are utilized to diminish numerical oscillations near interfaces. The influence of bubble size and bubble-bubble distance on the collapse of in-line two bubbles and in-line three bubbles are investigated to understand the conditions under which the bubble-bubble interactions accelerate or decelerate the bubble collapse. It is shown that when the in-line bubbles collapse by the incident shock wave, the collapse of the downstream bubble can be accelerated by the shock waves due to the collapse of upstream bubbles, while the collapse of the upstream bubbles is decelerated by the expansion wave cased by the reflection of the incident shock wave at the surface of the downstream bubbles. Also, there exists the bubble-bubble distance in which the collapse of the downstream bubble is most accelerated. When the downstream bubble is smaller than the upstream bubble, the downstream bubble collapses more violently than the single bubble at any distance between the bubbles. The phase of the downstream bubble at the impact of the shock waves generated from the upstream bubbles is important in determining the acceleration of the collapse of the downstream bubble. It is also shown that the pressure increase in liquid near the axis of symmetry around the downstream bubble increases with the increase of number of bubbles and with the decrease of the bubble-bubble distance because the pressure increase in liquid is caused by the superposition of the shock waves generated from all bubbles.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/84251/1/CAV2009-final53.pd

    Investigation of transition frequencies of two acoustically coupled bubbles using a direct numerical simulation technique

    The theoretical results regarding the ``transition frequencies'' of two acoustically interacting bubbles have been verified numerically. The theory provided by Ida [Phys. Lett. A 297 (2002) 210] predicted the existence of three transition frequencies per bubble, each of which has the phase difference of π/2\pi /2 between a bubble's pulsation and the external sound field, while previous theories predicted only two natural frequencies which cause such phase shifts. Namely, two of the three transition frequencies correspond to the natural frequencies, while the remaining does not. In a subsequent paper [M. Ida, Phys. Rev. E 67 (2003) 056617], it was shown theoretically that transition frequencies other than the natural frequencies may cause the sign reversal of the secondary Bjerknes force acting between pulsating bubbles. In the present study, we employ a direct numerical simulation technique that uses the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a surface-tension term as the governing equations to investigate the transition frequencies of two coupled bubbles by observing their pulsation amplitudes and directions of translational motion, both of which change as the driving frequency changes.     Economical, green, and safe route towards substituted lactones by anodic generation of oxycarbonyl radicals

    A new electrochemical methodology has been developed for the generation of oxycarbonyl radicals under mild and green conditions from readily available hemioxalate salts. Mono‐ and multi‐functionalised γ‐butyrolactones were synthesised through exo‐cyclisation of these oxycarbonyl radicals with an alkene, followed by the sp3–sp3 capture of the newly formed carbon‐centred radical. The synthesis of functionalised valerolactone derivatives was also achieved, demonstrating the versatility of the newly developed methodology. This represents a viable synthetic route towards pharmaceutically important fragments and further demonstrates the practicality of electrosynthesis as a green and economical method to activate small organic molecules

    High School Exit Examinations: When Do Learning Effects Generalize?

    This paper reviews international and domestic evidence on the effects of three types of high school exit exam systems: voluntary curriculum-based external exit exams, universal curriculum-based external exit exam systems and minimum competency tests that must be passed to receive a regular high school diploma. The nations and provinces that use Universal CBEEES (and typically teacher grades as well) to signal student achievement have significantly higher achievement levels and smaller differentials by family background than otherwise comparable jurisdictions that base high stakes decisions on voluntary college admissions tests and/or teacher grades. The introduction of Universal CBEEES in New York and North Carolina during the 1990s was associated with large increases in math achievement on NAEP tests. Research on MCTs and high school accountability tests is less conclusive because these systems are new and have only been implemented in one country. Cross-section studies using a comprehensive set of controls for family background have not found that students in MCT states score higher on audit tests like the NAEP that carry no stakes for the test taker. The analysis reported in table 1 tells us that the five states that introduced MCTs during the 1990s had significantly larger improvements on NAEP tests than states that made no change in their student accountability regime. The gains, however, are smaller than for the states introducing Universal CBEEES. New York and North Carolina. The most positive finding about MCTs is that students in MCT states earn significantly more during the first eight years after graduation than comparable students in other states suggesting that MCTs improve employer perceptions of the quality of the recent graduates of local high schools

    Search for astronomical neutrinos from blazar TXS 0506+056 in super-kamiokande

    We report a search for astronomical neutrinos in the energy region from several GeV to TeV in the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 using the Super-Kamiokande detector following the detection of a 100 TeV neutrinos from the same location by the IceCube collaboration. Using Super-Kamiokande neutrino data across several data samples observed from 1996 April to 2018 February we have searched for both a total excess above known backgrounds across the entire period as well as localized excesses on smaller timescales in that interval. No significant excess nor significant variation in the observed event rate are found in the blazar direction. Upper limits are placed on the electron- and muon-neutrino fluxes at the 90% confidence level as 6.0 × 10−7 and 4.5 × 10−7–9.3 × 10−10 [erg cm−2 s−1], respectively

    O objetivo do presente estudo foi à monitoração dos parâmetros laboratoriais como hemograma, enzimas hepáticas alanina aminotransferase (ALT) e gama-glutamiltransferase (GGT), glicemia e proteinograma sérico, e avaliar o efeito da idade em gatos sem raça definida durante a fase neonatal. Vinte gatos machos e fêmeas foram utilizados a partir do terceiro dia de vida até o 38º dia de idade. As amostras de sangue foram colhidas semanalmente e as análises laboratoriais (hemograma, enzimas hepáticas, glicemia e proteinograma sérico) realizadas no 3º, 10º, 17º, 24º, 31º e 38º dia de idade. Os resultados exibiram efeito significativo da idade sobre a contagem total de eritrócitos, concentração de hemoglobina, volume globular, volume corpuscular médio, concentração de hemoglobina corpuscular média, leucócitos totais, neutrófilos, eosinófilos e basófilos. Nenhum efeito foi observado em células como linfócitos, monócitos ou na concentração sérica de glicose. A análise das modificações ocorridas nos parâmetros laboratoriais durante a fase neonatal reflete o desenvolvimento fisiológico do filhote e contribui para o conhecimento do processo adaptativo em gatos neonatos durante o primeiro mês de vida, sendo útil para a avaliação clínica, diagnóstico e tratamento das doenças neonatais

    GMC Collisions as Triggers of Star Formation. II. 3D Turbulent, Magnetized Simulations

    We investigate giant molecular cloud (GMCs) collisions and their ability to induce gravitational instability and thus star formation. This mechanism may be a major driver of star formation activity in galactic disks. We carry out a series of three dimensional, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulations to study how cloud collisions trigger formation of dense filaments and clumps. Heating and cooling functions are implemented based on photo-dissociation region (PDR) models that span the atomic to molecular transition and can return detailed diagnostic information. The clouds are initialized with supersonic turbulence and a range of magnetic field strengths and orientations. Collisions at various velocities and impact parameters are investigated. Comparing and contrasting colliding and non-colliding cases, we characterize morphologies of dense gas, magnetic field structure, cloud kinematic signatures, and cloud dynamics. We present key observational diagnostics of cloud collisions, especially: relative orientations between magnetic fields and density structures, like filaments; 13CO(J=2-1), 13CO(J=3-2), and 12CO(J=8-7) integrated intensity maps and spectra; and cloud virial parameters.
