    People, Technologies, and Organizations Interactions in a Social Commerce Era

    Social commerce, a powerful combination of customer-oriented social computing technologies and new commercial features, is having an increasing impact on e-commerce, potentially generating substantial economic benefits. Drawing on socio-technical theory, this study establishes a research framework to help understand the social and technical factors affecting consumers’ intention to purchase on social commerce sites. Our results demonstrate that familiarity, user experience, learning & training, and social commerce constructs all have a positive effect on consumers’ perceptions of ease of use and usefulness, thereby enhancing their trust and intention to purchase. For systems designers and engineers, our results highlight the importance of social commerce features for building consumers’ trust of social commerce sites and supporting their intention to purchase

    Microfabricated platforms to investigate cell mechanical properties

    Mechanical stimulation has been imposed on living cells using several approaches. Most early investigations were conducted on groups of cells, utilizing techniques such as substrate deformation and flow-induced shear. To investigate the properties of cells individually, many conventional techniques were utilized, such as AFM, optical traps/optical tweezers, magnetic beads, and micropipette aspiration. In specific mechanical interrogations, microelectro- mechanical systems (MEMS) have been designed to probe single cells in different interrogation modes. To exert loads on the cells, these devices often comprise piezo-electric driven actuators that attach directly to the cell or move a structure on which cells are attached. Uniaxial and biaxial pullers, micropillars, and cantilever beams are examples of MEMS devices. In this review, the methodologies to analyze single cell activity under external loads using microfabricated devices will be examined. We will focus on the mechanical interrogation in three different regimes: compression, traction, and tension, and discuss different microfabricated platforms designed for these purposes

    Development and characterization of epoxy nanocomposites based on nano-structured oil palm ash.

    The aim of this study is to utilize the bio-agricultural waste as filler material for composite production which are abundantly available and low cost compared to the silica, alumina etc. The lacks of sufficient scientific information about the utilization of the oil palm ash (OPA) on composites production were the driving force for the choice of this work. Furthermore, the effect of filler loading percentage on physical, mechanical, thermal and morphology properties of the epoxy nanocomposites were studied. It was concluded that the size of the OPA had been successfully reduced from macromolecular to the nano-size range by high energy ball milling and was confirmed by TEM analysis. The density of the nano-structured OPA filled epoxy composites revealed that increasing filler loading will eventually increase the density. The tensile and flexural strength attained maximum value when the filler loading was 3%. Also, increase in the thermal stability was observed in case of 3% filler loading and was attributed to the increase in cross-linking of the epoxy resin in the presence of nano-stuctured OPA and having minimum particle to particle interaction and well dispersed nanoparticles

    Applying the reduce, reuse, and recycle principle in the hospitality sector: Its antecedents and performance implications

    Although the literature on eco-friendly strategies followed by firms is abundant, the focus on the reduce, reuse, and recycle (3Rs) policies as the cornerstone of environmental sustainability is scarce. This study examines the 3Rs environmental strategy among 143 large organizations in the hospitality industry. We use the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm theory to test the strategy's determinants and its impact on business performance on a suggested conceptualization level. As hypothesized, green corporate governance and environmental management systems, along with slack financial resources, were found to positively influence the adoption of a 3Rs environmental strategy. In turn, the implementation of the latter leads to superior business performance, measured in terms of operating profits and Tobin's Q. The study has several implications on a theoretical, managerial, and public policy level where intriguing directions for future research are provided

    Resposta à flexão e análise de tenacidade de argamassas reforçadas com fibra de Curauá

    O desenvolvimento e comercialização de materiais compósitos produzidos a partir de fibras naturais são considerados extremamente importante, uma vez que essas fibras reduzirão a dependência dos materiais produzidos com recursos não renováveis. Dentre essas fibras naturais destaca-se a fibra do curauá, sua utilização na produção de compósitos melhora de forma notável as propriedades do conjunto fibra matriz, logo o presente artigo objetiva estudar as propriedades mecânicas de compósitos reforçados com fibra de curauá, em especial sua resistência à flexão e tenacidade. Para isso foram confeccionadas cinco famílias de argamassas, uma de referência sem utilização da fibra e as outras quatro reforçada com fibra variando o comprimento da fibra e sua fração volumétrica. Verificou-se que a fibra do curauá ao ser adicionada em matriz cimentícia melhora suas propriedades mecânicas comparada a um compósito não reforçado com fibra, sua deformação, resistência à flexão e tenacidade são melhoradas

    Purpose: The sustainable development goals are the plans to accomplish a recovering and more sustainable future for all. However, with the COVID-19 epidemic, the challenges are more for achieving these goals by entrepreneurship. With the challenges of epidemics, new technological advancements have become the foundation of emerging forms of entrepreneurship, known as online entrepreneurship, technology-based entrepreneurship, digital entrepreneurship and cyber entrepreneurship. This form of entrepreneurship provides better opportunities for entrepreneurs to have community engagement to grow their platforms. Much has been written in the last decades about the traditional type of entrepreneurship and focused more on traditional business models. Furthermore, the role of cyber entrepreneurship has not been given much emphasis in the food industry. Nowadays, consumers prefer e-commerce platforms as a shopping means due to convenience, usefulness, and safety due to the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, the food industry is a saturated and highly competitive market, and retailers have to add additional online services to survive and compete. Although recently, a small segment of burgeoning literature on this topic has tended to study Internet-based entrepreneurship, the existing literature offers only a partial understanding of those concepts specifically cyber entrepreneurship for community engagement in epidemics when people have less physical interaction, specifically, in the food industry. Design: Consequently, this study employs empirical research with a holistic overview of the existing literature in an attempt to define the different forms of entrepreneurship in the current digital age with a focus on COVID-19 implications for cyber entrepreneurship. Findings: Using a multiple case study approach, this study identifies and explores the fundamental aspects of cyber entrepreneurship. The theoretical and practical implications of this research are explained at the end of the paper

    A peaks over threshold model for change-point detection by wavelets

    Newly available wavelet bases on multi-resolution analysis have exciting implications for detection of change-points. By checking the absolute value of wavelet coefficients one call detect discontinuities in ail otherwise smooth curve even in the presence of additive noise. In this paper, we combine wavelet methods and extreme value theory to test the presence of ail arbitrary number of discontinuities in an unknown function observed with noise. Our approach is based on a Peaks Over Threshold modelling of noisy wavelet transforms. Particular features of our method include the estimation of the extreme value index in the tail of the noise distribution. The critical region of our test is, derived using a Generalised Pareto Distribution approximation to normalised sums. Asymptotic results show that our method is powerful in a wide range of medium size wavelet frequencies. We compare our test with competing approaches on simulated examples and illustrate the method on Dow-Jones data
