    Influence of water extract of Mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) on growth of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata)

    Laboratory analysis of the water extract of Tithonia diversifolia shoot and root on infra-red spectrometer to determine the phytotoxic potential and greenhouse experiments to evaluate its phytotoxic effect and growth promoting attribute on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) were carried out. T. diversifolia contained some compounds having functional groups such as alcohols, olefins, six-membered ring lactams, ester, aromatic compound which can also be found in sesquiterpene lactones, an allelochemical implicated in phytotoxicity. The extract promoted seedling and plant growth. Bacillus and Streptococcus spp. earlier isolated from the root rhizosphere of T. diversifolia caused some changes in the spectra of the component compounds in the extract.     DEFINED BENEFIT PENSION ACCOUNTING AND MARKET VALUE PER SHARE OF QUOTED PHARMACEUTICAL FIRMS IN NIGERIA

    The study examineddefined benefit pension accounting and market value per share of quoted pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria. The research design adopted for this study was the ex-post facto design to investigate the relationship between Defined Benefit Pension Accounting and Market Value Per Share of Quoted Pharmaceutical Companies in Nigeria. The data used in this research were secondary data sourced from yearly account reports of these pharmaceutical companies named in Nigeria stock exchange fact books for time period of eleven years ranging from year 2011 to 2021. The sample size was three quoted pharmaceutical firms that have been trading consistently with the said period, while population was all the nine quoted pharmaceutical companies listed on the Nigeria stock exchange group. The Statistical tools used to analyze the data were descriptive Statistics, PPM correlation index, OLS and MRT as contained in SPSS package version were used to analyze the data and test research hypotheses.Secondary data was used to analysis the variables under study andthe study concluded that; there is a significant relationship between benefit service cost and market value per share which suggest that benefit service cost, as a proxy for independent variable (i.e.  defined pension accounting) has impact on the market price per share of quoted pharmaceutical firms in Nigeria.Based on the foregoing, his study recommends that organization, especially the quoted pharmaceutical firms in Nigeria, should ensure that they improve their benefit service cost in order to boost their market value per share

    Software Intrusion Detection Evaluation System: A Cost-Based Evaluation of Intrusion Detection Capability

    In this paper, we consider a cost-based extension of intrusion detection capability (CID). An objective metric motivated by information theory is presented and based on this formulation; a package for computing the intrusion detection capability of intrusion detection system (IDS), given certain input parameters is developed using Java. In order to determine the expected cost at each IDS operating point, the decision tree method of analysis is employed, and plots of expected cost and intrusion detection capability against false positive rate were generated. The point of intersection between the maximum intrusion detection capability and the expected cost is selected as the optimal operating point. Considering an IDS in the context of its intrinsic ability to detect intrusions at the least expected cost, findings revealed that the optimal operating point is the most suitable for the given IDS. The cost-based extension is used to select optimal operating point, calculate expected cost, and compare two actual intrusion detectors. The proposed cost-based extension of intrusion detection capability will be very useful to information technology (IT), telecommunication firms, and financial institutions, for making proper decisions in evaluating the suitability of an IDS for a specific operational environment

    Colonic Spirochetosis in a 60-Year-Old Immunocompetent Patient: Case Report and Review

    Spirochetes, a genetically and morphologically distinct group of bacteria, are thin, spiral-shaped, and highly motile. They are known causes of several human diseases such as syphilis, Lyme disease, relapsing fever, and leptospirosis. We report a case of colonic spirochetosis in a healthy patient presenting for surveillance colonoscopy. The diagnosis of intestinal spirochetosis was made accidentally during the histological examination of colonic polyps, which were removed during colonoscopy. We also performed an extensive review on intestinal spirochetosis with a focus on clinical presentation and outcomes of reported cases from the past two decades

    STOCHASTIC MODEL ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF MEDIA CAMPAIGN ON TRANSMISSION OF COVID – 19 EPIDEMIC.

    The COVID - 19 pandemic is currently causing authorities and public health officials more concern. The goal of the project is to convert a deterministic model for COVID-19 transmissions to a stochastic model, and then analyze the results to see how media-driven awareness campaigns have an impact on the disease's spread. The dynamic COVID-19 model was converted to a stochastic model, which was then examined. The model includes the following categories: Susceptible (S), Exposed (E), Infected class (I),  Isolated class ( ), Aware class  and Recovered class (R), as well as the Cumulative density of awareness programs by media denoted by   . With the help of MATLAB, the converted model is then numerically solved using the Eula Maruyama approach, allowing the existence and uniqueness of the model to be examined. The implementation of awareness programs has been found to have a significant positive impact on the spread of COVID-19. As the rate of implementation of these programs rises, the population that is exposed to the virus and those who are infected with it declines, and it has been hypothesized that this will eventually cause COVID-19 to become extinct. According to the report, putting awareness campaigns into place can help stop the COVID-19 epidemic from spreading

    Effects of Magnesium Variation and Heat Treatment on Mechanical and Micro-Structural Properties of Ductile Cast Iron

    The effects of magnesium variation and austempering heat treatment on mechanical and microstructural properties of ductile iron produced using the rotary furnace were investigated. Varied quantity of magnesium-ferrosilicon in the range of 0.03 % to 0.06 % were used as nodulirizer to treat 4 kg mass of molten metal per ladle by sandwich process and poured into sand mould.  Mechanical test (tensile, hardness, fatigue, impact and wear) and micro-structural examinations were carried out on the four samples produced. Samples C and D of 0.056% and 0.061% magnesium showed an improvement in their micro-structural properties due to the presence of more graphite nodules. Hence, they were observed to have exhibited better tensile strength of 598.07MPa and 609.03MPa. The fatigue strength also increased to 501.91MPa and 509.27MPa respectively. These two samples were further subjected to austempering heat treatment by heating to 850ºC for austenitization and soaked for homogenization for one hour at the temperature before quickly transferred into a salt bath of 50 % NaNO3 : 50 % NaCl maintained at 3600C and quenched for transformation for 1 hour before finally air cooled. Mechanical tests and micro-structural examinations were thereafter carried out. Sample C had an outstanding increase in tensile strength, from 598.07MPa to 891.22MPa, while specimen D increased from 609.03MPa to 898.76MPa. The results of abrasion test indicated that samples C and D had abrasion resistance increase from 2.20×10¹¹m² and 2.39×10¹¹m² to 2.35×10¹¹m² and 2.68×10¹¹ m² respectively after austempering. There were also relative increase in fatigue resistance and impact toughness for the two samples but with relative reduction in hardness from 47.7 to 44.2 and 50.3 to 47.4

    Antiproliferative, antioxidant and antiplasmodial activities of the root bark of Adenodolichos paniculatus (Hua) Hutch (Fabaceae)

    Adenodolichos paniculatus Hua & Hutch (Fabaceae) is a plant whose roots are traditionally employed for the treatment of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cancer. The powdered root bark of Adenodolichos paniculatus were extracted with dichloromethane followed by 70% methanol to afford dichloromethane (DCM) and hydromethanolic (HME) extracts respectively. Thereafter, fresh powdered root was extracted with water via decoction method and lyophilized to afford aqueous extract (AQE). The extracts were then subjected to standard phytochemical studies, antiproliferative (A2780 ovarian cancer cell assay), antiplasmodial (Dd2 strain of Plasmodium falciparum), antioxidant (DPPH, FRAP and ABTS methods) and brine shrimp lethality assay studies. The DCM extract was found to possess high levels of total phenolics and flavonoids with notable potential antiproliferative (IC50 = 0.14 μg/ml), antiplasmodial (IC50 = 7.50 μg/ml) and cytotoxic (brine shrimp, IC50 = 0.547 μg/ml) activities. However, HME had significant antioxidant (DPPH, IC50 = 17.54 ± 0.03 μg/ml; ABTS, IC50 = 8.08 ± 0.05 μg/ml). Both HME and AQE were found to be inactive against the drug-resistant Dd2 strain of Plasmodium falciparum with an IC50 value ˃100μg/mL. The study revealed the potential of Adenodolichos paniculatus as a promising antiproliferative agent and also corroborated the ethnomedical uses of the plant
