    Pre-school experience and Key Stage 2 performance in English and Mathematics

Children\u27s educational attainment in English and mathematics was derived from their national Key Stage 2 assessments. The analyses have considered the child\u27s level of Key Stage 2 attainment in terms of the effects of child, family, home environment and preschool experience variables as well as the child\u27s ability at the start of primary school

    The role of pre-school quality in promoting resilience in the cognitive development of young children

    The study reported here investigates the role of pre-school education as a protective factor in the development of children who are at risk due to environmental and individual factors. This investigation builds upon earlier research by examining different kinds of 'quality' in early education and tests the hypothesis that pre-schools of high quality can moderate the impacts of risks upon cognitive development. Cognitive development was measured in 2857 English pre-schoolers at 36 and 58 months of age, together with 22 individual risks to children's development, and assessments were made of the quality of their pre-school provision. Multilevel Structural Equation Modelling revealed that: the global quality of pre-school can moderate the effects of familial risk (such as poverty); the relationships between staff and children can moderate the effects of child level risk (such as low birth weight); and the specific quality of curricular provision can moderate the effects of both. Policy makers need to take quality into account in their efforts to promote resilience in young 'at risk' children through early childhood services

    The role of the supply chain in the elimination and reduction of construction rework and defects: an action research approach

    Since 2007, Ireland has suffered a circa 80% reduction in construction output. This has resulted in bankruptcy, unemployment and bad debt. Contractors have attached greater emphasis to production efficiency and cost reduction as a means of survival. An Action Research (AR) strategy was used in this research to improve processes adopted by a SME contractor for the control of defects in its supply chain. It is conservatively estimated that rework, typically accounts for, circa 5% of total project costs. Rework is wasteful and presents an obvious target for improvement. The research reported here concerns the (first) diagnosing stage of the AR cycle only, involving: observation of fieldwork, analysis of contract documents, and semi-structured interviews with supply chain members. The results indicate potential for supply chain participants to identify root causes of defects and propose solutions, having regard to best practice to avoid re-occurrence. A lack of collaborative forums to contribute to production improvement was identified. Additionally the processes, used to collect, manage and disseminate data were unstructured and uncoordinated, indicating scope for developing more efficient methods. The research indicates good understanding of the potential benefits for supply chain collaboration but suggests that the tools and knowledge to collaborate are currently lacking in the SME sector

    The nedd-8 activating enzyme gene underlies genetic resistance to infectious pancreatic necrosis virus in Atlantic salmon

    Genetic resistance to infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) in Atlantic salmon is a rare example of a trait where a single locus (QTL) explains almost all of the genetic variation. Genetic marker tests based on this QTL on salmon chromosome 26 have been widely applied in selective breeding to markedly reduce the incidence of the disease. In the current study, whole genome sequencing and functional annotation approaches were applied to characterise genes and variants in the QTL region. This was complemented by an analysis of differential expression between salmon fry of homozygous resistant and homozygous susceptible genotypes challenged with IPNV. These analyses pointed to the NEDD-8 activating enzyme 1 (nae1) gene as a putative functional candidate underlying the QTL effect. The role of nae1 in IPN resistance was further assessed via CRISPR-Cas9 knockout of the nae1 gene and chemical inhibition of the nae1 protein activity in Atlantic salmon cell lines, both of which resulted in highly significant reduction in productive IPNV replication. In contrast, CRISPR-Cas9 knockout of a candidate gene previously purported to be a cellular receptor for the virus (cdh1) did not have a major impact on productive IPNV replication. These results suggest that nae1 is the causative gene underlying the major QTL affecting resistance to IPNV in salmon, provide further evidence for the critical role of neddylation in host-pathogen interactions, and highlight the value in combining high-throughput genomics approaches with targeted genome editing to understand the genetic basis of disease resistance

    Assessment for learning : a model for the development of a child’s self competence in the early years of education

    In recent years policy documents, curricula and other educational initiatives have promoted a pedagogy founded on the concept of independent learning. This is broadly defined as ‘having the belief in yourself to think through learning activities, problems or challenges, make decisions about your learning and act upon those decisions (Blandford and Knowles, 2009:336). The central role of Assessment for Learning (AfL) in this process is often overlooked in practice. By considering the findings from a small scale research study this article addresses the central role of the teacher /practitioner in developing effective AfL in the early years classroom (3-5 years)

    Reducing recurrent care proceedings: initial evidence from new interventions

    The English family justice system faces a crisis of recurrence. As many as one in four birth mothers involved in public law care proceedings in English family courts are likely to reappear in a subsequent set of proceedings within seven years. These mothers are involved in up to one-third of total care applications, as they are – by definition – linked to more than one child . Few birth mothers experiencing the removal of a child to care are offered any follow-up support, despite often facing multiple challenges including poverty, addiction, domestic violence and mental health problems. Since 2011, however, a number of new services have been established to begin to address their unmet needs. This article summarises the findings of the first academic-led evaluation of two of these initiatives. Presenting evidence from a mixed-methods evaluative study, it concludes that the new services were able to foster relationships that ‘worked’ in reducing recurrent proceedings. None of the women engaging with the services went on to experience what could be described as a ‘rapid repeat pregnancy’ within the evaluation window. Just as significantly, a number of clients reported some improvement in their psychological functioning, and the practitioners involved reported positively on their experience of delivering and managing innovative services. The article closes with a discussion of the challenges of evaluating personalised, strengths-based interventions and the possibilities of evidencing empowerment in these cases
