Perspectives of the Swiss policy towards the European Union

Relations between Switzerland and the European Union might be perceived as interesting, and at the same time an unprecedented example of the new, flexible integration. Despite more than a decade of fruitful cooperation, many of its aspects remains controversial. The problem of autonomous adaptation, lack of ability to influence decision-making processes within the Community, the opening of the labor market for new EU member states or other institutional aspects of the implementation of the agreements. These are just a part of the problems, which could be mentioned here. So the basie ąuestion remains - what will happen next? Has this an unprecedented example of a new form of integration reached its limits? What could be the prospects for the futurę cooperation? This article attempts to fmd answers to these ąuestions. Several scenarios are taking under consideration, based on an analysis of current conditions and experiences, as well as on evaluation of the current political strategy of the govemment. That is: continuation of the bilateral relations, the accession to the European Union or the conclusion of a framework or association agreement. Those scenarios are being analysed in order to find the most probably solution for the futurę relations between European Union and Switzerland

    Aging in the Social Space

A publication called Aging in the Social Space is a compilation of studies, which deal with theoretical understanding and empirical solutions, learning about problem spheres, specifying content parallels of social, legal, economic, moral and ethical views on senior issues in society, which are closely related to each other and are interconnected. This publication focus on the case study of Poland. It is supposed to provide a multidimensional view of old age issues and issues related to aging and care for old people in society. We believe that it is natural also to name individual spheres, in which society has some eff ect, either direct or indirect, within issues concerning seniors. Learning about these spheres is the primary prerequisite for successful use of social help to seniors in society

Passive acoustic quantification of gas releases

    No full text
The assessment of undersea gas leakages from anthropogenic and natural sources is becoming increasingly important. This includes the detection of gas leaks and the quantification of gas flux. This has applications within oceanography (e.g. natural methane seeps) and the oil and gas industry (e.g. leaks from undersea gas pipelines, carbon capture and storage facilities). Gas escaping underwater can result in the formation of gas bubbles, and this leads to specific acoustic pressure fluctuations (sound) which can be analysed using passive acoustic systems. Such a technique offers the advantage of lower electrical power requirements for long term monitoring. It is common practice for researchers to identify single bubble injection events from time histories or time frequency representations of hydrophone data, and infer bubble sizes from the centre frequency of the emission. Such a technique is well suited for gas releases that represent low flow rates, and involving solitary bubble release. However, for larger events, with the overlapping of bubble acoustic emissions, the inability to discriminate each individual bubble injection event makes this approach inappropriate. In this study, an inverse method to quantify such release is used. The model is first outlined and following this its accuracy at different flow rate regimes is tested against experimental data collected from tests which took place in a large water tank. The direct measurements are compared to estimates inferred from acoustics.<br/

Do not let the dead bite! : different scenarios of the zombie epidemic reexamined

    Get PDF
The Zombie Epidemic is a fun framework for investigating different scenarios of spreading disease. An extended Kermack - McKendrick model is analyzed. The only thing that can save humanity is to not get bitten or to find a remedy for the "zombie virus" (both almost impossible)

    Detection of line segments

In the paper a method of line segment detection in the images is presented. It bases on existing LSD approach which was designed to be a parameterless technique dedicated to analysis of real world scenes. In consequence it encounters problems with other types of images, e.g. medical images, where the characteristic of the structures may be completely different. The method proposed in this work allows to tune its parameters for that characteristic and thus allows to achieve satisfactory results also for medical data. The effect of the approach is illustrated with mammographic images
