The ALMA Early Science View of FUor/EXor objects. III. The Slow and Wide Outflow of V883 Ori
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/ sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) observations
of V883 Ori, an FU Ori object. We describe the molecular outflow and envelope
of the system based on the CO and CO emissions, which together
trace a bipolar molecular outflow. The CO emission traces the rotational
motion of the circumstellar disk. From the CO blue-shifted emission, we
estimate a wide opening angle of 150 for the outflow
cavities. Also, we find that the outflow is very slow (characteristic velocity
of only 0.65 km~s), which is unique for an FU Ori object. We calculate
the kinematic properties of the outflow in the standard manner using the
CO and CO emissions. In addition, we present a P Cygni profile
observed in the high-resolution optical spectrum, evidence of a wind driven by
the accretion and being the cause for the particular morphology of the
outflows. We discuss the implications of our findings and the rise of these
slow outflows during and/or after the formation of a rotationally supported
disk.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Accepte
Response to the Letter to the Editor
This paper has attracted interest around the world from the media (both TV
and newspapers). In addition, we have received letters, emails and telephone
calls. One of our favorites was a voicemail message asking us to return a call
to Australia at which point we would learn who really killed JFK. We welcome
the opportunity to respond to the letter to the editor from Mr. Fiorentino. Mr.
Fiorentino claims that our ``statement relating to the likelihood of a second
assassin based on the premise of three or more separate bullets is demonstrably
false.'' In response we would like to simply quote from page 327 of Gerald
Posner's book Case Closed, one of the most well known works supporting the
single assassin theory: ``If Connally was hit by another bullet, it had to be
fired from a second shooter, since the Warren Commission's own reconstructions
showed that Oswald could not have operated the bolt and refired in 1.4
seconds.'' Mr. Fiorentino also claims that the ``second fatal flaw is the use
of a rather uncomplicated formula based on Bayes Theorem.'' Let denote the
evidence and denote the theory that there were just two bullets (and hence
a single shooter). We used Bayes Theorem to hypothetically calculate
from and the prior probability . In order to make ten
times more likely than , the ratio of the prior probabilities
[i.e., ] would have to be greater than 15. Thus, we again
conclude that this casts serious doubt on Dr. Guinn's conclusion that the
evidence supported just two bullets. Sadly, this is far from the first time
that probability has been misunderstood and/or misapplied in a case of public
interest. A notable British example is the Clark case. See Nobles and Schiff
(2005) for details. Finally, we welcome and, in fact, encourage members of the
scientific community to provide alternative analyses of the data.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/07-AOAS154 the Annals of

Chemical and forensic analysis of JFK assassination bullet lots: Is a second shooter possible?
The assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) traumatized the
nation. In this paper we show that evidence used to rule out a second assassin
is fundamentally flawed. This paper discusses new compositional analyses of
bullets reportedly to have been derived from the same batch as those used in
the assassination. The new analyses show that the bullet fragments involved in
the assassination are not nearly as rare as previously reported. In particular,
the new test results are compared to key bullet composition testimony presented
before the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA). Matches of bullets
within the same box of bullets are shown to be much more likely than indicated
in the House Select Committee on Assassinations' testimony. Additionally, we
show that one of the ten test bullets is considered a match to one or more
assassination fragments. This finding means that the bullet fragments from the
assassination that match could have come from three or more separate bullets.
Finally, this paper presents a case for reanalyzing the assassination bullet
fragments and conducting the necessary supporting scientific studies. These
analyses will shed light on whether the five bullet fragments constitute three
or more separate bullets. If the assassination fragments are derived from three
or more separate bullets, then a second assassin is likely, as the additional
bullet would not easily be attributable to the main suspect, Mr. Oswald, under
widely accepted shooting scenarios [see Posner (1993), Case Closed, Bantam, New
York].Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/07-AOAS119 the Annals of

A Flattened Protostellar Envelope in Absorption around L1157
Deep Spitzer IRAC images of L1157 reveal many of the details of the outflow
and the circumstellar environment of this Class 0 protostar. In IRAC band 4, 8
microns, there is a flattened structure seen in absorption against the
background emission. The structure is perpendicular to the outflow and is
extended to a diameter of 2 arcminutes. This structure is the first clear
detection of a flattened circumstellar envelope or pseudo-disk around a Class 0
protostar. Such a flattened morphology is an expected outcome for many collapse
theories that include magnetic fields or rotation. We construct an extinction
model for a power-law density profile, but we do not constrain the density
power-law index.Comment: ApJL accepte
Probing 5f-state configurations in URu2Si2 with U L3-edge resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy
Resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) was employed at the U L3
absorption edge and the La1 emission line to explore the 5f occupancy, nf, and
the degree of 5f orbital delocalization in the hidden order compound URu2Si2.
By comparing to suitable reference materials such as UF4, UCd11, and alpha-U,
we conclude that the 5f orbital in URu2Si2 is at least partially delocalized
with nf = 2.87 +/- 0.08, and does not change with temperature down to 10 K
within the estimated error. These results place further constraints on
theoretical explanations of the hidden order, especially those requiring a
localized f2 ground state.Comment: 11 pages,7 figure
On the nature of the deeply embedded protostar OMC-2 FIR 4
We use mid-infrared to submillimeter data from the Spitzer, Herschel, and
APEX telescopes to study the bright sub-mm source OMC-2 FIR 4. We find a point
source at 8, 24, and 70 m, and a compact, but extended source at 160, 350,
and 870 m. The peak of the emission from 8 to 70 m, attributed to the
protostar associated with FIR 4, is displaced relative to the peak of the
extended emission; the latter represents the large molecular core the protostar
is embedded within. We determine that the protostar has a bolometric luminosity
of 37 Lsun, although including more extended emission surrounding the point
source raises this value to 86 Lsun. Radiative transfer models of the
protostellar system fit the observed SED well and yield a total luminosity of
most likely less than 100 Lsun. Our models suggest that the bolometric
luminosity of the protostar could be just 12-14 Lsun, while the luminosity of
the colder (~ 20 K) extended core could be around 100 Lsun, with a mass of
about 27 Msun. Our derived luminosities for the protostar OMC-2 FIR 4 are in
direct contradiction with previous claims of a total luminosity of 1000 Lsun
(Crimier et al 2009). Furthermore, we find evidence from far-infrared molecular
spectra (Kama et al. 2013, Manoj et al. 2013) and 3.6 cm emission (Reipurth et
al 1999) that FIR 4 drives an outflow. The final stellar mass the protostar
will ultimately achieve is uncertain due to its association with the large
reservoir of mass found in the cold core.Comment: Accpeted by ApJ, 17 pages, 11 figure
Symplectic No-core Shell-model Approach to Intermediate-mass Nuclei
We present a microscopic description of nuclei in an intermediate-mass
region, including the proximity to the proton drip line, based on a no-core
shell model with a schematic many-nucleon long-range interaction with no
parameter adjustments. The outcome confirms the essential role played by the
symplectic symmetry to inform the interaction and the winnowing of shell-model
spaces. We show that it is imperative that model spaces be expanded well beyond
the current limits up through fifteen major shells to accommodate particle
excitations that appear critical to highly-deformed spatial structures and the
convergence of associated observables.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
