Prompt atmospheric neutrino fluxes: perturbative QCD models and nuclear effects
We evaluate the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux at high energies using three
different frameworks for calculating the heavy quark production cross section
in QCD: NLO perturbative QCD, factorization including low-
resummation, and the dipole model including parton saturation. We use QCD
parameters, the value for the charm quark mass and the range for the
factorization and renormalization scales that provide the best description of
the total charm cross section measured at fixed target experiments, at RHIC and
at LHC. Using these parameters we calculate differential cross sections for
charm and bottom production and compare with the latest data on forward charm
meson production from LHCb at TeV and at TeV, finding good agreement
with the data. In addition, we investigate the role of nuclear shadowing by
including nuclear parton distribution functions (PDF) for the target air
nucleus using two different nuclear PDF schemes. Depending on the scheme used,
we find the reduction of the flux due to nuclear effects varies from to
at the highest energies. Finally, we compare our results with the
IceCube limit on the prompt neutrino flux, which is already providing valuable

Granzyme G is expressed in the two-cell stage mouse embryo and is required for the maternal-zygotic transition
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Detailed knowledge of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that direct spatial and temporal gene expression in pre-implantation embryos is critical for understanding the control of the maternal-zygotic transition and cell differentiation in early embryonic development. In this study, twenty-three clones, expressed at different stages of early mouse development, were identified using differential display reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (DDRT-PCR). One of these clones, which is expressed in 2-cell stage embryos at 48 hr post-hCG injection, shows a perfect sequence homology to the gene encoding the granzyme G protein. The granzyme family members are serine proteases that are present in the secretory granules of cytolytic T lymphocytes. However, the pattern of granzyme G expression and its function in early mouse embryos are entirely unknown.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Upon the introduction of an antisense morpholino (2 mM) against granzyme G to knock-down endogenous gene function, all embryos were arrested at the 2- to 4-cell stages of egg cleavage, and the <it>de novo </it>synthesis of zygotic RNAs was decreased. The embryonic survival rate was dramatically decreased at the late 2-cell stage when serine protease-specific inhibitors, 0.1 mM 3,4-dichloroisocoumarin (3,4-DCI), and 2 mM phenyl methanesulphonyl fluoride (PMSF), were added to the <it>in vitro </it>embryonic culture medium. Survival was not affected by the addition of 0.5 mM EDTA, a metalloproteinase inhibitor.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We characterized for the first time the expression and function of <it>granzyme G </it>during early stage embryogenesis. Our data suggest that granzyme G is an important factor in early mouse embryonic development and may play a novel role in the elimination of maternal proteins and the triggering of zygotic gene expression during the maternal-zygotic transition.</p
Association between the Severity of Influenza A(H7N9) Virus Infections and Length of the Incubation Period
In early 2013, a novel avian-origin influenza A(H7N9) virus emerged in China, and has caused sporadic human infections. The incubation period is the delay from infection until onset of symptoms, and varies from person to person. Few previous studies have examined whether the duration of the incubation period correlates with subsequent disease severity. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We analyzed data of period of exposure on 395 human cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza A(H7N9) virus infection in China in a Bayesian framework using a Weibull distribution. We found a longer incubation period for the 173 fatal cases with a mean of 3.7 days (95% credibility interval, CrI: 3.4-4.1), compared to a mean of 3.3 days (95% CrI: 2.9-3.6) for the 222 non-fatal cases, and the difference in means was marginally significant at 0.47 days (95% CrI: -0.04, 0.99). There was a statistically significant correlation between a longer incubation period and an increased risk of death after adjustment for age, sex, geographical location and underlying medical conditions (adjusted odds ratio 1.70 per day increase in incubation period; 95% credibility interval 1.47-1.97). CONCLUSIONS: We found a significant association between a longer incubation period and a greater risk of death among human H7N9 cases. The underlying biological mechanisms leading to this association deserve further exploration.published_or_final_versio
Risk factors for race-day fatality in flat racing Thoroughbreds in Great Britain (2000 to 2013)
A key focus of the racing industry is to reduce the number of race-day events where horses die suddenly or are euthanased due to catastrophic injury. The objective of this study was therefore to determine risk factors for race-day fatalities in Thoroughbred racehorses, using a cohort of all horses participating in flat racing in Great Britain between 2000 and 2013. Horse-, race- and course-level data were collected and combined with all race-day fatalities, recorded by racecourse veterinarians in a central database. Associations between exposure variables and fatality were assessed using logistic regression analyses for (1) all starts in the dataset and (2) starts made on turf surfaces only. There were 806,764 starts in total, of which 548,571 were on turf surfaces. A total of 610 fatalities were recorded; 377 (61.8%) on turf. In both regression models, increased firmness of the going, increasing racing distance, increasing average horse performance, first year of racing and wearing eye cover for the first time all increased the odds of fatality. Generally, the odds of fatality also increased with increasing horse age whereas increasing number of previous starts reduced fatality odds. In the ‘all starts’ model, horses racing in an auction race were at 1.46 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06–2.01) times the odds of fatality compared with horses not racing in this race type. In the turf starts model, horses racing in Group 1 races were at 3.19 (95% CI 1.71–5.93) times the odds of fatality compared with horses not racing in this race type. Identification of novel risk factors including wearing eye cover and race type will help to inform strategies to further reduce the rate of fatality in flat racing horses, enhancing horse and jockey welfare and safety
New Insight into Intrachromosomal Deletions Induced by Chrysotile in the gpt delta Transgenic Mutation Assay
BACKGROUND: Genotoxicity is often a prerequisite to the development of malignancy. Considerable evidence has shown that exposure to asbestos fibers results in the generation of chromosomal aberrations and multilocus mutations using various in vitro approaches. However, there is less evidence to demonstrate the contribution of deletions to the mutagenicity of asbestos fibers in vivo. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we investigated the mutant fractions and the patterns induced by chrysotile fibers in gpt delta transgenic mouse primary embryo fibroblasts (MEFs) and compared the results obtained with hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in an attempt to illustrate the role of oxyradicals in fiber mutagenesis. RESULTS: Chrysotile fibers induced a dose-dependent increase in mutation yield at the redBA/gam loci in transgenic MEF cells. The number of λ mutants losing both redBA and gam loci induced by chrysotiles at a dose of 1 μg/cm(2) increased by > 5-fold relative to nontreated controls (p < 0.005). Mutation spectra analyses showed that the ratio of λ mutants losing the redBA/gam region induced by chrysotiles was similar to those induced by equitoxic doses of H(2)O(2). Moreover, treatment with catalase abrogated the accumulation of γ-H2AX, a biomarker of DNA double-strand breaks, induced by chrysotile fibers. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide novel information on the frequencies and types of mutations induced by asbestos fibers in the gpt delta transgenic mouse mutagenic assay, which shows great promise for evaluating fiber/particle mutagenicity in vivo
DNA analysis of Huntington's disease in Southern Chinese
Allelic frequencies of RFLPs at loci closely linked to the HD gene, D4S95, D4S91, D4S141, and D4S90, were determined in 13 Huntington's disease (HD) patients from nine Chinese families and 129 normal subjects. These were similar for non-HD and HD chromosomes and the HD gene in Chinese is associated with multiple haplotypes. Hence the HD gene probably arose independently in the background haplotypes of the Chinese population. The heterozygosity rates for the two most useful RFLP sites are 0.659 for D4S95-AcI VNTR and 0.494 for D4S141-HindIII. (CAG)n repeat numbers ranged from 12 to 27 in 174 normal chromosomes. In 52 meiotic recombinations, the (CAG)n repeats were stably inherited in normal families. In HD families, 12 of 13 HD patients had expanded (CAG)n repeats of 40 to 58. Additionally, 10 asymptomatic family members had expanded (CAG)n repeats and the inheritance of the expanded repeat was unstable in these families.published_or_final_versio
Flavor conversion of cosmic neutrinos from hidden jets
High energy cosmic neutrino fluxes can be produced inside relativistic jets
under the envelopes of collapsing stars. In the energy range E ~ (0.3 - 1e5)
GeV, flavor conversion of these neutrinos is modified by various matter effects
inside the star and the Earth. We present a comprehensive (both analytic and
numerical) description of the flavor conversion of these neutrinos which
includes: (i) oscillations inside jets, (ii) flavor-to-mass state transitions
in an envelope, (iii) loss of coherence on the way to observer, and (iv)
oscillations of the mass states inside the Earth. We show that conversion has
several new features which are not realized in other objects, in particular
interference effects ("L- and H- wiggles") induced by the adiabaticity
violation. The neutrino-neutrino scattering inside jet and inelastic neutrino
interactions in the envelope may produce some additional features at E > 1e4
GeV. We study dependence of the probabilities and flavor ratios in the
matter-affected region on angles theta13 and theta23, on the CP-phase delta, as
well as on the initial flavor content and density profile of the star. We show
that measurements of the energy dependence of the flavor ratios will, in
principle, allow to determine independently the neutrino and astrophysical

Frozen and Invariant Quantum Discord under Local Dephasing Noise
In this chapter, we intend to explore and review some remarkable dynamical
properties of quantum discord under various different open quantum system
models. Specifically, our discussion will include several concepts connected to
the phenomena of time invariant and frozen quantum discord. Furthermore, we
will elaborate on the relation of these two phenomena to the non-Markovian
features of the open system dynamics and to the usage of dynamical decoupling
