Natural killer cells: role in local tumor growth and metastasis
Historically, the name of natural killer (NK) cells came from their natural ability to kill tumor cells in vitro. From the 1970s to date, accumulating data highlighted the importance of NK cells in host immune response against cancer and in therapy-induced antitumor response. The recognition and the lysis of tumor cells by NK cells are regulated by a complex balance of inhibitory and activating signals. This review summarizes NK cell mechanisms to kill cancer cells, their role in host immune responses against tumor growth or metastasis, and their implications in antitumor immunotherapies via cytokines, antibodies, or in combination with other therapies. The regulatory role of NK cells in autoimmunity is also discussed
On the Field Equations of Kaluza's Theory
The field equations of the original Kaluza's theory are analyzed and it is
shown that they lead to modification of Einstein's equations. The appearing
extra energy-momentum tensor is studied and an example is given where this
extra energy-momentum tensor is shown to allow four-dimensional Schwarzschild
geometry to accommodate electrostatics. Such deviation from Reissner-Nordstrom
geometry can account for the interpretation of Schwarzschild geometry as
resulting not from mass only, but from the combined effects of mass and
electric charge, even electric charge alone.Comment: 14 pages, two sections added and title changed. To appear in Physics

Parameterized Post-Newtonian coefficients for Brans-Dicke gravity with d+1 dimensions
We present calculations of Post-Newtonian parameters for Brans-Dicke
tensor-scalar gravity in an arbitrary number of compact extra dimensions in
both the Jordan and Einstein conformal frames. We find that the parameter
gamma, which measures the amount of spacetime curvature per unit mass, becomes
a function of omega, the coefficient of the scalar kinetic term in the
Brans-Dicke Lagrangian. Experiment has placed strong constraints on gamma which
require that omega become negative in the Jordan frame for any number of extra
dimensions, highlighting that this formulation is not physical. We also confirm
the well-known result that a compact extra dimension can be equivalently viewed
as a massless scalar `dilaton.' In the Einstein frame, we find that the
behavior of gamma as constrained by experiment replicates that which is
predicted by string theory.Comment: 9 pages, accepted in Classical and Quantum Gravit

Functional and Efficient Query Interpreters: Principle, Application and Performances’ Comparison
This paper presents a general approach to implement efficient queries’ interpreters in a functional programming language. Indeed, most of the standard tools actually available use an imperative and/or object-oriented language for the implementation (e.g. Java for Jena-Fuseki) but other paradigms are possible with, maybe, better performances. To proceed, the paper first explains how to model data structures and queries in a functional point of view. Then, it proposes a general methodology to get performances (i.e. number of computation steps to answer a query) then it explains how to integrate some optimization techniques (short-cut fusion and, more important, data transformations). It then compares the functional server proposed to a standard tool (Fuseki) demonstrating that the first one can be twice to ten times faster to answer queries
