    The determinants of university strategic positioning: A reappraisal of the organizational dimension

    This paper makes a contribution to the debate on university organisational actorhood by theorising the determinants of institutional strategic positioning. It argues that besides environmental forces and managerial rationality, the organisational dimension needs to be accounted for. Addressing the mixed empirical evidence in the relevant literature, we conceptualise the organisational dimension as a meso-level intervening variable mediating both external influences (outside-inside) and organisational action (inside-outside). We operationalize the organizational dimension along three components: organizational structure, identity, and centrality, which are further elaborated in sub-components and indicators. A set of hypotheses to be tested in empirical research is provided. The paper offers new perspectives on the dynamics of change in higher education and on strategic agency of organizational actors

    The role of the organisational dimension in university positioning: a case-study approach

    This paper argues that university strategic positioning is influenced by the organisational dimension, operationalised along the variables of organisational structure, identity and centrality. A comparative case study is presented including two English and two Italian universities and drawing on a set of sixty interviews with academic leaders, managers and administrators. The analysis of the trajectory of the four universities from 2004 to 2018 illustrates the articulation of the link between the three organisational variables and positioning and how this has changed over time. Finally, the paper outlines six propositions on the expected impact of the organisational structure, identity and centrality on positioning processes of universities

    Spectral engineering of optical fiber preforms through active nanoparticle doping

    Europium doped alkaline earth fluoride [Eu:AEF(2) (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba)] nanoparticles were synthesized and systematically incorporated into the core of modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD)-derived silica-based preforms by solution doping. The resulting preforms were examined to determine the impact of the nanoparticles chemistry on the spectroscopic behavior of the glass. The dominant existence of Eu3+ was demonstrated in all preforms, which is in contrast to conventional solution doped preforms employing dissolved europium salts where Eu2+ is primarily observed. Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime measurements indicated that the nanoparticles composition is effective in controlling, at a local chemical and structural level, the spectroscopic properties of active dopants in optical fiber glasses. Further, there is a systematic and marked increase in radiative lifetime, tau, of the Eu3+ emission that follows the cationic mass; tau(Ca) \u3c tau(Sr) \u3c tau(Ba) with the BaF2-derived sample yielding a 37% lengthening of the lifetime over the CaF2-derived one. Such nanoscale control of what otherwise is silica glass could be useful for realizing property-enhanced and tailored spectroscopic performance from otherwise standard materials, e.g., vapor-derived silica, in next generation optical fibers

    Predictors of severe hyperbiliruniaemia in HIV-infected patients treated with atazanavir (ATV)

    Methods HIV-infected subjects on ATV/ritonavir containing stable HAART regimen were included. ATV plasma concentrations were measured 24 hours after the last dose by HPLC with UV detector. Polymorphism at the uridin-glocoronosyl-transferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) was examined in DNA extracted from blood mononuclear cells, to identify subjects with Gilbert's syndrome. The correlation between bilirubin plasma levels, ATV concentration and polymorphism of UGT1A1 (defined as the presence than at least one TA7 allele) were evaluated by multivariate linear regression (other covariates included: gender, age, CD4 count, months of ATV exposure). Predictors of severe hyperbilirubinemia (>2.5 μmol/l; grade 3) were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression (polymorphism at UGT1A1, Cmin, BMI, age included as covariates)

    Surgical approaches for possible positions of an olfactory implant to stimulate the olfactory bulb

    Introduction: Current scientific developments seem to allow for an "olfactory implant"in analogy to cochlear implants. However, the position and surgical approaches for electrical stimulation of the olfactory system are unclear. Methods: In a human anatomic cadaver study, we investigated different endoscopic approaches to electrically stimulate the olfactory bulb (OB) based on the following considerations: (1) the stimulating electrode should be close to the OB. (2) The surgical procedure should be as non-invasive and safe as possible and (3) as easy as possible for an experienced ENT surgeon. Results: In summary, the endoscopic intracranial positioning of the electrode via a widened ostium of the fila olfactoria or a frontal sinus surgery like a Draf IIb procedure is a good option in terms of patients' risk, degree of difficulty for ENT surgeons, and position to the OB. Endoscopic intranasal positioning appeared to be the best option in terms of patient risk and the degree of difficulty for ENT surgeons. Although a bigger approach to the OB using a drill and the combined intranasal endoscopic and external approach enabled a close placement of the electrode to the OB, they do not seem relevant in practice due to their higher invasiveness. Conclusion: The study suggested that an intranasal positioning of a stimulating electrode is possible, with placements beneath the cribriform plate, extra- or intracranially, applying elegant surgical techniques with low or medium risk to the patient and a close placement to OB

    Modulation of electron transport during Swing ECCD discharges in TCV

    Generation of a swing electron cyclotron current drive (swing ECCD), i.e. driving alternated, symmetric, positive or negative local ECCD, during a single discharge and at constant total input EC power, was performed at the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV). The electron temperature is observed to be modulated inside the deposition radius, implying modulation of the electron transport properties. The modulation of ECCD is the only actuator for the observed modifications in the electron transport properties. These exhibit inverted behaviors depending on the deposition location of the co- and counter-ECCD. At more on-axis depositions, swing ECCD results in a higher electron temperature during the co- ECCD phase, whereas at more off-axis depositions, the electron temperature is higher during the counter-ECCD phase. Transport modeling of these discharges shows that the local electron tranport behavior depends on the value of the modulated magnetic shear. The results are transport model independent, confirming the robustness of the magnetic shear modeling, and indicating that the main contribution is due to the ECCD. Moreover, the results are consistent with predictions from gyrokinetic simulations, that the local electron confinement is proportional to the magnetic shear at low shear and inversely at high shear values, s greater than or similar to 1
