Are the HI deficient galaxies on the outskirts of Virgo recent arrivals?
The presence on the Virgo cluster outskirts of spiral galaxies with gas
deficiencies as strong as those of the inner galaxies stripped by the
intracluster medium has led us to explore the possibility that some of these
peripheral objects are not newcomers. A dynamical model for the collapse and
rebound of spherical shells under the point mass and radial flow approximations
has been developed to account for the amplitude of the motions in the Virgo I
cluster (VIC) region. According to our analysis, it is not unfeasible that
galaxies far from the cluster, including those in a gas-deficient group well to
its background, went through its core a few Gyr ago. The implications would be:
(1) that the majority of the HI-deficient spirals in the VIC region might have
been deprived of their neutral hydrogen by interactions with the hot
intracluster medium; and (2) that objects spending a long time outside the
cluster cores might keep the gas deficient status without altering their

Power scaling rules for charmonia production and HQEFT
We discuss the power scaling rules along the lines of a complete Heavy Quark
Effective Field Theory (HQEFT) for the description of heavy quarkonium
production through a color-octet mechanism. To this end, we firstly derive a
tree-level heavy quark effective Lagrangian keeping both particle-antiparticle
mixed sectors allowing for heavy quark-antiquark pair annihilation and
creation, but describing only low-energy modes around the heavy quark mass.
Then we show the consistency of using HQEFT fields in constructing four-fermion
local operators a la NRQCD, to be identified with standard color-octet matrix
elements. We analyze some numerical values extracted from charmonia production
by different authors and their hierarchy in the light of HQEFT.Comment: LaTeX, 19 pages, 3 EPS figure
Triple-Star Candidates Among the Kepler Binaries
We present the results of a search through the photometric database of
eclipsing Kepler binaries (Prsa et al. 2011; Slawson et al. 2011) looking for
evidence of hierarchical triple star systems. The presence of a third star
orbiting the binary can be inferred from eclipse timing variations. We apply a
simple algorithm in an automated determination of the eclipse times for all
2157 binaries. The "calculated" eclipse times, based on a constant period
model, are subtracted from those observed. The resulting O-C (observed minus
calculated times) curves are then visually inspected for periodicities in order
to find triple-star candidates. After eliminating false positives due to the
beat frequency between the ~1/2-hour Kepler cadence and the binary period, 39
candidate triple systems were identified. The periodic O-C curves for these
candidates were then fit for contributions from both the classical Roemer delay
and so-called "physical" delay, in an attempt to extract a number of the system
parameters of the triple. We discuss the limitations of the information that
can be inferred from these O-C curves without further supplemental input, e.g.,
ground-based spectroscopy. Based on the limited range of orbital periods for
the triple star systems to which this search is sensitive, we can extrapolate

A heavy quark effective field lagrangian keeping particle and antiparticle mixed sectors
We derive a tree-level heavy quark effective Lagrangian keeping
particle-antiparticle mixed sectors allowing for heavy quark-antiquark pair
annihilation and creation. However, when removing the unwanted degrees of
freedom from the effective Lagrangian one has to be careful in using the
classical equations of motion obeyed by the effective fields in order to get a
convergent expansion on the reciprocal of the heavy quark mass. Then the
application of the effective theory to such hard processes should be sensible
for special kinematic regimes as for example heavy quark pair production near

Bouncing Cosmologies in Palatini Gravity
We consider the early time cosmology of f(R) theories in Palatini formalism
and study the conditions that guarantee the existence of homogeneous and
isotropic models that avoid the Big Bang singularity. We show that for such
models the Big Bang singularity can be replaced by a cosmic bounce without
violating any energy condition. In fact, the bounce is possible even for
pressureless dust. We give a characterization of such models and discuss their
dynamics in the region near the bounce. We also find that power-law lagrangians
with a finite number of terms may lead to non-singular universes, which
contrasts with the infinite-series Palatini f(R) lagrangian that one needs to
fully capture the effective dynamics of Loop Quantum Cosmology. We argue that
these models could also avoid the formation of singularities during stellar

Semiclassical zero-temperature corrections to Schwarzschild spacetime and holography
Motivated by the quest for black holes in AdS braneworlds, and in particular
by the holographic conjecture relating 5D classical bulk solutions with 4D
quantum corrected ones, we numerically solve the semiclassical Einstein
equations (backreaction equations) with matter fields in the (zero temperature)
Boulware vacuum state. In the absence of an exact analytical expression for
in four dimensions we work within the s-wave approximation. Our
results show that the quantum corrected solution is very similar to
Schwarzschild till very close to the horizon, but then a bouncing surface for
the radial function appears which prevents the formation of an event horizon.
We also analyze the behavior of the geometry beyond the bounce, where a
curvature singularity arises. In the dual theory, this indicates that the
corresponding 5D static classical braneworld solution is not a black hole but

High-contrast 40 Gb/s operation of a 500 um long silicon carrier-depletion slow wave modulator

based on a traveling-wave Mach¿Zehnder interferometer with two 500 μm long slow wave phase shifters. 40 Gb ∕ s
operation with 6.6 dB extinction ratio at quadrature and with an on-chip insertion loss of only 6 dB is shown. These
results confirm the benefits of slow light as a means to enhance the performance of silicon modulators based on the

M-Dwarf Fast Rotators and the Detection of Relatively Young Multiple M-Star Systems
We have searched the Kepler light curves of ~3900 M-star targets for evidence
of periodicities that indicate, by means of the effects of starspots, rapid
stellar rotation. Several analysis techniques, including Fourier transforms,
inspection of folded light curves, 'sonograms', and phase tracking of
individual modulation cycles, were applied in order to distinguish the
periodicities due to rapid rotation from those due to stellar pulsations,
eclipsing binaries, or transiting planets. We find 178 Kepler M-star targets
with rotation periods, P_rot, of < 2 days, and 110 with P_rot < 1 day. Some 30
of the 178 systems exhibit two or more independent short periods within the
same Kepler photometric aperture, while several have three or more short
periods. Adaptive optics imaging and modeling of the Kepler pixel response
function for a subset of our sample support the conclusion that the targets
with multiple periods are highly likely to be relatively young physical binary,
triple, and even quadruple M star systems. We explore in detail the one object
with four incommensurate periods all less than 1.2 days, and show that two of
the periods arise from one of a close pair of stars, while the other two arise
from the second star, which itself is probably a visual binary. If most of
these M-star systems with multiple periods turn out to be bound M stars, this
could prove a valuable way of discovering young hierarchical M-star systems;
the same approach may also be applicable to G and K stars. The ~5% occurrence
rate of rapid rotation among the ~3900 M star targets is consistent with spin
evolution models that include an initial contraction phase followed by magnetic
braking, wherein a typical M star can spend several hundred Myr before spinning

el contrario, las roturas musculares y tendinosas
del hombro son lesiones poco frecuentes en
el deportista pero no por ello irrelevantes, pues
pueden provocar una gran incapacidad para
seguir desempeñando el mismo deporte y al
mismo nivel de competición si no se hace un
tratamiento correcto, a pesar del cual a veces
los resultados no son satisfactorios. Es decir,
pueden representar el "principio del fin" de la
