Cycloaddition of vinyl aziridines with unsaturated substrates. A novel rearrangement of an unsaturated nitro compound.

Vinylaziridine undergoes reaction with electrophilic acetylenes and olefins to produce 7-membered azepine derivatives. With [beta]-nitro-styrene however, a novel rearrangement occurs, presumably via an ene reaction to form , the structure of which is definitively shown by x-ray diffraction.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/24586/1/0000869.pd

The radicalization of democracy: conflict, social movements and terrorism

    Get PDF
The idea of democracy is being championed across the world, with some fifty new countries embracing this type of political system between 1974 and 2011 (Freedom House, 2016). Simultaneously, however, dissatisfaction has grown due to the perceived incapacity of democracy to deal with collective problems, hence the necessity to reconfigure it and redraw some of its principles. This paper links the analysis of the recent evolution of democratic systems with the trajectory of socio-political conflicts and the changing features of contemporary terrorism. It examines, therefore, two intertwined phenomena, namely the radicalization of democracy and the radicalization of the other. It concludes by stressing that encouraging dissent and heeding contentious claims made by social movements may be one way of mitigating both types of radicalization. Embedded in the tradition of critical criminology, this paper attempts to demonstrate that only by outflanking conventional categories of analysis can the criminological community aspire to grasp such thorny contemporary phenomena

Using Multi-view Recognition and Meta-data Annotation to Guide a Robot's Attention

In the transition from industrial to service robotics, robots will have to deal with increasingly unpredictable and variable environments. We present a system that is able to recognize objects of a certain class in an image and to identify their parts for potential interactions. The method can recognize objects from arbitrary viewpoints and generalizes to instances that have never been observed during training, even if they are partially occluded and appear against cluttered backgrounds. Our approach builds on the implicit shape model of Leibe et al. We extend it to couple recognition to the provision of meta-dat

    Deep Face Recognition: a Survey

    No full text
Face recognition made tremendous leaps in the last five years with a myriad of systems proposing novel techniques substantially backed by deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN). Although face recognition performance sky-rocketed using deep-learning in classic datasets like LFW, leading to the belief that this technique reached human performance, it still remains an open problem in unconstrained environments as demonstrated by the newly released IJB datasets. This survey aims to summarize the main advances in deep face recognition and, more in general, in learning face representations for verification and identification. The survey provides a clear, structured presentation of the principal, state-of-the-art (SOTA) face recognition techniques appearing within the past five years in top computer vision venues

Digital palaeography: New machines and old texts (Dagstuhl seminar 14302)

This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 14302 "Digital Palaeography: New Machines and Old Texts", which focused on the nteraction of Palaeography and computerized tools developed in Computer Vision for the analysis of digital images. This seminar intertwined research reports from the most advanced teams in the field and interdisciplinary discussions on the potentials and limitations of future research and the establishment of a community of practice in Digital Palaeography. It resulted in new research directions in the Computer Sciences and new research strategies in Palaeography and in a better understanding of how to conduct interdisciplinary research across all the fields of expertise involved in Digital Palaeography
