    An efficient quantum circuit analyser on qubits and qudits

    This paper presents a highly efficient decomposition scheme and its associated Mathematica notebook for the analysis of complicated quantum circuits comprised of single/multiple qubit and qudit quantum gates. In particular, this scheme reduces the evaluation of multiple unitary gate operations with many conditionals to just two matrix additions, regardless of the number of conditionals or gate dimensions. This improves significantly the capability of a quantum circuit analyser implemented in a classical computer. This is also the first efficient quantum circuit analyser to include qudit quantum logic gates

    Image-Based Bed Material Mapping of a Large River

    The composition or bed material plays a crucial role in the physical hydromorphological processes of fluvial systems. However, conventional bed material sampling methods provide only pointwise information, which can be inadequate when investigating large rivers of inhomogeneous bed material characteristics. In this study, novel, image-based approaches are implemented to gain areal information of the bed surface composition using two different techniques: monocular and stereo computer vision. Using underwater videos, captured in shorter reaches of the Hungarian Danube River, a comparison of the bed material grain size distributions from conventional physical samplings and the ones reconstructed from the images is carried out. Moreover, an attempt is made to quantify bed surface roughness, using the so-called Structure from Motion image analysis method. Practical aspects of the applicability of image-based bed material mapping are discussed and future improvements towards an automatized mapping methodology are outlined

    3D laser nano-printing on fibre paves the way for super-focusing of multimode laser radiation

    Multimode high-power laser diodes suffer from inefficient beam focusing, leading to a focal spot 10–100 times greater than the diffraction limit. This inevitably restricts their wider use in ‘direct-diode’ applications in materials processing and biomedical photonics. We report here a ‘super-focusing’ characteristic for laser diodes, where the exploitation of self-interference of modes enables a significant reduction of the focal spot size. This is achieved by employing a conical microlens fabricated on the tip of a multimode optical fibre using 3D laser nano-printing (also known as multi-photon lithography). When refracted by the conical surface, the modes of the fibre-coupled laser beam self-interfere and form an elongated narrow focus, usually referred to as a ‘needle’ beam. The multiphoton lithography technique allows the realisation of almost any optical element on a fibre tip, thus providing the most suitable interface for free-space applications of multimode fibre-delivered laser beams. In addition, we demonstrate the optical trapping of microscopic objects with a super-focused multimode laser diode beam thus rising new opportunities within the applications sector where lab-on-chip configurations can be exploited. Most importantly, the demonstrated super-focusing approach opens up new avenues for the ‘direct-diode’ applications in material processing and 3D printing, where both high power and tight focusing is required

    Mobile reasoners play a pivotal role in the so-called Semantic Web of Things. While several tools exist for the Android platform, iOS has been neglected so far. This is due to architectural differences and unavailability of OWL manipulation libraries, which make porting existing engines harder. This paper presents Mini-ME Swift, the first Description Logics reasoner for iOS. It implements standard (Subsumption, Satisfiability, Classification, Consistency) and non-standard (Abduction, Contraction, Covering, Difference) inferences in an OWL 2 fragment. Peculiarities are discussed and performance results are presented, comparing Mini-ME Swift with other state-of-the-art OWL reasoners

    Quantifying the bias in data links

    The main idea behind Linked Data is to connect data from different sources together, in order to develop a hub of shared and publicly accessible knowledge. While the benefit of sharing knowledge is universally recognised, what is less visible is how much results can be affected when the knowledge in one dataset and in the connected ones are not equally distributed. This lack of balance in information, or bias, generally assumed a priori, can actually be quantified to improve the quality of the results of applications and analytics relying on such linked data. In this paper, we propose a process to measure how much bias one dataset contains when compared to another one, by identifying the most affected RDF properties and values within the set of entities that those datasets have in common (defined as the linkset). This process was ran on a wide range of linksets from Linked Data, and in the experiment section we present the results as well as measures of its performance
