    Local Thermal Non-equilibrium Analysis of Cu-Al2O3 Hybrid ‎Nanofluid Natural Convection in a Partially Layered Porous ‎Enclosure with Wavy Walls

    A numerical study is performed to investigate the local thermal non-equilibrium effects on the natural convection in a two-dimensional enclosure with horizontal wavy walls, layered by a porous medium, saturated by Cu-Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid. It is examined the influence of the nanoparticle volume fraction, varied from 0 to 0.04, the Darcy number (10-5 ≤ Da ≤ 10-2), the modified conductivity ratio (0.1 ≤ ϒ ≤ 1000), the porous layer height (0 ≤ Hp ≤ 1), and the wavy wall wavenumber (1 ≤ N ≤ 5) on natural convection in the enclosure. Predictions of the steady incompressible flow and temperature fields are obtained by the Galerkin finite element method, using the Darcy-Brinkman model in the porous layer. These are validated against previous numerical and experimental studies. By resolving separately the temperature fields of the working fluid and of the porous matrix, the local thermal non-equilibrium model exposed hot and cold spot formation and mitigation mechanisms on the heated and cooled walls. By determining the convection cell strength, the Darcy number is the first rank controlling parameter on the heat transfer performance, followed by N, Hp and γ. The heat transfer rate through the hybrid nanofluid and solid phases is highest when N = 4 at a fixed value of nanoparticle volume fraction

    Spatial Particle Condensation for an Exclusion Process on a Ring

    We study the stationary state of a simple exclusion process on a ring which was recently introduced by Arndt {\it et al} [J. Phys. A {\bf 31} (1998) L45;cond-mat/9809123]. This model exhibits spatial condensation of particles. It has been argued that the model has a phase transition from a ``mixed phase'' to a ``disordered phase''. However, in this paper exact calculations are presented which, we believe, show that in the framework of a grand canonical ensemble there is no such phase transition. An analysis of the fluctuations in the particle density strongly suggests that the same result also holds for the canonical ensemble.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure

The crystal structure is stabilized by aromatic π–π inter­actions between the benzene rings of neighbouring mol­ecules [centroid–centroid distance = 3.680 (2) Å], and by weak inter­molecular C—H⋯O and C—H⋯Cl inter­actions. Additionally, the crystal structure exhibits a short intra­molecular C—H⋯Br contact (H⋯Br = 2.69 Å)

    Breakdown of superfluidity of an atom laser past an obstacle

    The 1D flow of a continuous beam of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in the presence of an obstacle is studied as a function of the beam velocity and of the type of perturbing potential (representing the interaction of the obstacle with the atoms of the beam). We identify the relevant regimes: stationary/time-dependent and superfluid/dissipative; the absence of drag is used as a criterion for superfluidity. There exists a critical velocity below which the flow is superfluid. For attractive obstacles, we show that this critical velocity can reach the value predicted by Landau's approach. For penetrable obstacles, it is shown that superfluidity is recovered at large beam velocity. Finally, enormous differences in drag occur when switching from repulsive to attractive potential.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure

    The Use of Massive Endoprostheses for the Treatment of Bone Metastases

    Purpose. We report a series of 58 patients with metastatic bone disease treated with resection and endoprosthetic reconstruction over a five-year period at our institution. Introduction. The recent advances in adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy in cancer treatment have resulted in improved prognosis of patients with bone metastases. Most patients who have either an actual or impending pathological fracture should have operative stabilisation or reconstruction. Endoprosthetic reconstructions are indicated in patients with extensive bone loss, failed conventional reconstructions, and selected isolated metastases. Methods and Results. We identified all patients who were diagnosed with metastatic disease to bone between 1999 and 2003. One hundred and seventy-one patients were diagnosed with bone metastases. Metastatic breast and renal cancer accounted for 84 lesions (49%). Fifty-eight patients with isolated bone metastasis to the appendicular skeleton had an endoprosthetic reconstruction. There were 28 males and 30 females. Twelve patients had an endoprosthesis in the upper extremity and 46 patients had an endoprosthesis in the lower extremity. The mean age at presentation was 62 years (24 to 88). At the time of writing, 19 patients are still alive, 34 patients have died, and 5 have been lost to follow up. Patients were followed up and evaluated using the musculoskeletal society tumour score (MSTS) and the Toronto extremity salvage score (TESS). The mean MSTS was 73% (57% to 90%) and TESS was 71% (46% to 95%). Mean follow-up was 48.2 months (range 27 to 82 months) and patients died of disease at a mean of 22 months (2 to 51 months) from surgery. Complications included 5 superficial wound infections, 1 aseptic loosening, 4 dislocations, 1 subluxation, and 1 case, where the tibial component of a prosthesis rotated requiring open repositioning. Conclusions. We conclude that endoprosthetic replacement for the treatment of isolated bone metastases is a reliable method of limb reconstruction in selected cases. It is associated with low complication and failure rates in our series, and achieves the aims of restoring function, allowing early weight bearing and alleviating pain

    Prevalence and Characteristics of Self-Reported Hypothyroidism and Its Association with Nonorgan-Specific Manifestations in US Sarcoidosis Patients: A Nationwide Registry Study

    Little is known about the prevalence, clinical characteristics and impact of hypothyroidism in patients with sarcoidosis. We aimed to determine the prevalence and clinical features of hypothyroidism and its relation to organ involvement and other clinical manifestations in patients with sarcoidosis. We conducted a national registry-based study investigating 3835 respondents to the Sarcoidosis Advanced Registry for Cures Questionnaire between June 2014 and August 2019. This registry is based on a self-reported, web-based questionnaire that provides data related to demographics, diagnostics, sarcoidosis manifestations and treatment. We compared sarcoidosis patients with and without self-reported hypothyroidism. We used multivariable logistic regression and adjusted for potential confounders to determine the association of hypothyroidism with nonorgan-specific manifestations. 14% of the sarcoidosis patients self-reported hypothyroidism and were generally middle-aged white women. Hypothyroid patients had more comorbid conditions and were more likely to have multiorgan sarcoidosis involvement, especially with cutaneous, ocular, joints, liver and lacrimal gland involvement. Self-reported hypothyroidism was associated with depression (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.3, 95% CI 1.01–1.6), antidepressant use (aOR 1.3, 95% CI 1.1–1.7), obesity (aOR 1.7, 95% CI 1.4–2.1), sleep apnoea (aOR 1.7, 95% CI 1.3–2.2), chronic fatigue syndrome (aOR 1.5, 95% CI 1.2–2) and was borderline associated with fibromyalgia (aOR 1.3, 95% CI 1–1.8). Physical impairment was more common in patients with hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a frequent comorbidity in sarcoidosis patients that might be a potentially reversible contributor to fatigue, depression and physical impairment in this population. We recommend considering routine screening for hypothyroidism in sarcoidosis patients especially in those with multiorgan sarcoidosis, fatigue and depression

    A measurement of proton-carbon forward scattering in a proof-of-principle test of the EMPHATIC spectrometer

    The next generation of long-baseline neutrino experiments will be capable of precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters, precision neutrino-nucleus scattering, and unprecedented sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model. Reduced uncertainties in neutrino fluxes are necessary to achieve high precision and sensitivity in these future precise neutrino measurements. New measurements of hadron-nucleus interaction cross sections are needed to reduce uncertainties of neutrino fluxes. We report measurements of the differential cross-section as a function of scattering angle for proton-carbon interactions with a single charged particle in the final state at beam momenta of 20, 30, and 120 GeV/c. These measurements are the result of a beam test for EMPHATIC, a hadron-scattering and hadron-production experiment. The total, elastic and inelastic cross-sections are also extracted from the data and compared to previous measurements. These results can be used in current and future long-baseline neutrino experiments, and demonstrate the feasibility of future measurements by an upgraded EMPHATIC spectrometer
