Business process simulation: An alternative modelling technique for the information system development process
This paper discusses the idea that even though information systems development
(ISD) approaches have long advocated the use of integrated organisational views, the
modelling techniques used have not been adapted accordingly and remain focused on
the automated information system (IS) solution. Existing research provides evidence
that business process simulation (BPS) can be used at different points in the ISD
process to provide better integrated organisational views that aid the design of
appropriate IS solutions. Despite this fact, research in this area is not extensive;
suggesting that the potential of using BPS for the ISD process is not yet well
understood. The paper uses the findings from three different case studies to illustrate
the ways BPS has been used at different points in the ISD process. It compares the
results against IS modelling techniques, highlighting the advantages and
disadvantages that BPS has over the latter. The research necessary to develop
appropriate BPS tools and give guidance on their use in the ISD process is discussed
A programme management approach for ensuring coherence in IS (higher) education
This paper examines IS higher education, concentrating on issues of ‘coherence’ in IS curricula. While curriculum coherence can be jeopardized by poor curriculum design, misalignment between module content and/or misalignment between module or course aims can cause serious coherence issues over time. Misalignment of this type is exacerbated by the traditional processes of curriculum (re)design, which rely heavily on the (singular) interpretation of highly abstract documents, such as module syllabi and course specifications – often produced by curriculum designers in isolation. To improve curriculum coherence, this paper examines the use of a programme management framework as a means of (a) ‘humanizing’ the abstract aims and goals of curricula schemes and (b) managing the delivery and evolution of curricula in relation to the stakeholders in the process of delivery. The practical use of the framework is examined in the context of a Masters-level course in ‘Information Systems Management’. An action research approach is used to demonstrate the practical utility of the framework in terms of (a) improving communication of curricula, (b) improving the coherence between modules and between modules and course and (c) removing content redundancy. Guidelines are presented that generalize the findings in order that key practices may be adopted by others
Pathological video game playing in Spanish and British adolescents: towards the exploration of Internet Gaming Disorder symptomatology
Research into problematic video gaming has increased greatly over the last decade and many screening instruments have been developed to identify such behaviour. This study re-examined the Problematic Videogame Playing [PVP] Scale. The objectives of the study were to (i) examine its psychometric properties in two European countries, (ii) estimate the prevalence of potential pathological gaming among adolescents in both countries, and (iii) assess the classification accuracy of the PVP Scale based on its symptomatology as a way of exploring its relationship with both the behavioural component model of addiction and the proposed Internet Gaming Disorder. The data were collected via a survey administered to 2,356 adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years from Spain (n=1,132) and Great Britain (n=1,224). Results indicated that the reliability of both versions was adequate, and the factorial and construct validity were good. Findings also showed that the prevalence of pathological gamers estimated with a rigorous cut-off point was 7.7% for Spanish and 14.6% for British adolescents. The scale showed adequate sensitivity, specificity and classification accuracy in both countries, and was able to differentiate between social and potential pathological gamers, and from their addictive symptomatology. Fast Fight Detection
Action recognition has become a hot topic within computer vision. However, the action recognition community has focused mainly on relatively simple actions like clapping, walking, jogging, etc. The detection of specific events with direct practical use such as fights or in general aggressive behavior has been comparatively less studied. Such capability may be extremely useful in some video surveillance scenarios like prisons, psychiatric centers or even embedded in camera phones. As a consequence, there is growing interest in developing violence detection algorithms. Recent work considered the well-known Bag-of-Words framework for the specific problem of fight detection. Under this framework, spatio-temporal features are extracted from the video sequences and used for classification. Despite encouraging results in which high accuracy rates were achieved, the computational cost of extracting such features is prohibitive for practical applications. This work proposes a novel method to detect violence sequences. Features extracted from motion blobs are used to discriminate fight and non-fight sequences. Although the method is outperformed in accuracy by state of the art, it has a significantly faster computation time thus making it amenable for real-time applications
Emergent bipartiteness in a society of knights and knaves
We propose a simple model of a social network based on so-called
knights-and-knaves puzzles. The model describes the formation of networks
between two classes of agents where links are formed by agents introducing
their neighbours to others of their own class. We show that if the proportion
of knights and knaves is within a certain range, the network self-organizes to
a perfectly bipartite state. However, if the excess of one of the two classes
is greater than a threshold value, bipartiteness is not observed. We offer a
detailed theoretical analysis for the behaviour of the model, investigate its
behaviou r in the thermodynamic limit, and argue that it provides a simple
example of a topology-driven model whose behaviour is strongly reminiscent of a
first-order phase transitions far from equilibrium.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Phase transition in the globalization of trade
Globalization processes interweave economic structures at a worldwide scale,
trade playing a central role as one of the elemental channels of interaction
among countries. Despite the significance of such phenomena, measuring economic
globalization still remains an open problem. More quantitative treatments could
improve the understanding of globalization at the same time that help a formal
basis for comparative economic history. In this letter, we investigate the time
evolution of the statistical properties of bilateral trade imbalances between
countries in the trade system. We measure their cumulative probability
distribution at different moments in time to discover a sudden transition circa
1960 from a regime where the distribution was always represented by a steady
characteristic function to a new state where the distribution dilates as time
goes on. This suggests that the rule that was governing the statistical
behavior of bilateral trade imbalances until the 60's abruptly changed to a new
form persistent in the last decades. In the new regime, the figures for the
different years collapse into a universal master curve when rescaled by the
corresponding global gross domestic product value. This coupling points to an
increased interdependence of world economies and its onset corresponds in time
