Quantitative stray field imaging of a magnetic vortex core
Thin-film ferromagnetic disks present a vortex spin structure whose dynamics,
added to the small size (~10 nm) of their core, earned them intensive study.
Here we use a scanning nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center microscope to
quantitatively map the stray magnetic field above a 1 micron-diameter disk of
permalloy, unambiguously revealing the vortex core. Analysis of both
probe-to-sample distance and tip motion effects through stroboscopic
measurements, allows us to compare directly our quantitative images to
micromagnetic simulations of an ideal structure. Slight perturbations with
respect to the perfect vortex structure are clearly detected either due to an
applied in-plane magnetic field or imperfections of the magnetic structures.
This work demonstrates the potential of scanning NV microscopy to map tiny
stray field variations from nanostructures, providing a nanoscale,
non-perturbative detection of their magnetic texture.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Magnetic imaging with an ensemble of Nitrogen Vacancy centers in diamond
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is an atom-like system in
the solid-state which specific spin properties can be efficiently used as a
sensitive magnetic sensor. An external magnetic field induces Zeeman shifts of
the NV center levels which can be measured using Optically Detected Magnetic
Resonance (ODMR). In this work, we exploit the ODMR signal of an ensemble of NV
centers in order to quantitatively map the vectorial structure of a magnetic
field produced by a sample close to the surface of a CVD diamond hosting a thin
layer of NV centers. The reconstruction of the magnetic field is based on a
maximum-likelihood technique which exploits the response of the four intrinsic
orientations of the NV center inside the diamond lattice. The sensitivity
associated to a 1 {\mu}m^2 area of the doped layer, equivalent to a sensor
consisting of approximately 10^4 NV centers, is of the order of 2
{\mu}T/sqrt{Hz}. The spatial resolution of the imaging device is 400 nm,
limited by the numerical aperture of the optical microscope which is used to
collect the photoluminescence of the NV layer. The versatility of the sensor is
illustrated by the accurate reconstruction of the magnetic field created by a
DC current inside a copper wire deposited on the diamond sample.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, figure 4 added, results unchange
Minimal basilar membrane motion in low-frequency hearing
Low-frequency hearing is critically important for speech and music perception, but no mechanical measurements have previously been available from inner ears with intact low-frequency parts. These regions of the cochlea may function in ways different from the extensively studied high-frequency regions, where the sensory outer hair cells produce force that greatly increases the sound-evoked vibrations of the basilar membrane. We used laser interferometry in vitro and optical coherence tomography in vivo to study the low-frequency part of the guinea pig cochlea, and found that sound stimulation caused motion of a minimal portion of the basilar membrane. Outside the region of peak movement, an exponential decline in motion amplitude occurred across the basilar membrane. The moving region had different dependence on stimulus frequency than the vibrations measured near the mechanosensitive stereocilia. This behavior differs substantially from the behavior found in the extensively studied high-frequency regions of the cochlea

Engineered arrays of NV color centers in diamond based on implantation of CN- molecules through nanoapertures
We report a versatile method to engineer arrays of nitrogen-vacancy (NV)
color centers in dia- mond at the nanoscale. The defects were produced in
parallel by ion implantation through 80 nm diameter apertures patterned using
electron beam lithography in a PMMA layer deposited on a diamond surface. The
implantation was performed with CN- molecules which increased the NV defect
formation yield. This method could enable the realization of a solid-state
coupled-spin array and could be used for positioning an optically active NV
center on a photonic microstructure.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Electron spin resonance detected by a superconducting qubit
A new method for detecting the magnetic resonance of electronic spins at low
temperature is demonstrated. It consists in measuring the signal emitted by the
spins with a superconducting qubit that acts as a single-microwave-photon
detector, resulting in an enhanced sensitivity. We implement this new type of
electron-spin resonance spectroscopy using a hybrid quantum circuit in which a
transmon qubit is coupled to a spin ensemble consisting of NV centers in
diamond. With this setup we measure the NV center absorption spectrum at 30mK
at an excitation level of \thicksim15\,\mu_{B} out of an ensemble of 10^{11}
spins.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Metatranscriptome of human faecal microbial communities in a cohort of adult men
The gut microbiome is intimately related to human health, but it is not yet known which functional activities are driven by specific microorganisms\u27 ecological configurations or transcription. We report a large-scale investigation of 372 human faecal metatranscriptomes and 929 metagenomes from a subset of 308 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. We identified a metatranscriptomic \u27core\u27 universally transcribed over time and across participants, often by different microorganisms. In contrast to the housekeeping functions enriched in this core, a \u27variable\u27 metatranscriptome included specialized pathways that were differentially expressed both across participants and among microorganisms. Finally, longitudinal metagenomic profiles allowed ecological interaction network reconstruction, which remained stable over the six-month timespan, as did strain tracking within and between participants. These results provide an initial characterization of human faecal microbial ecology into core, subject-specific, microorganism-specific and temporally variable transcription, and they differentiate metagenomically versus metatranscriptomically informative aspects of the human faecal microbiome
Quantum Loop Subalgebra and Eigenvectors of the Superintegrable Chiral Potts Transfer Matrices
It has been shown in earlier works that for Q=0 and L a multiple of N, the
ground state sector eigenspace of the superintegrable tau_2(t_q) model is
highly degenerate and is generated by a quantum loop algebra L(sl_2).
Furthermore, this loop algebra can be decomposed into r=(N-1)L/N simple sl_2
algebras. For Q not equal 0, we shall show here that the corresponding
eigenspace of tau_2(t_q) is still highly degenerate, but splits into two
spaces, each containing 2^{r-1} independent eigenvectors. The generators for
the sl_2 subalgebras, and also for the quantum loop subalgebra, are given
generalizing those in the Q=0 case. However, the Serre relations for the
generators of the loop subalgebra are only proven for some states, tested on
small systems and conjectured otherwise. Assuming their validity we construct
the eigenvectors of the Q not equal 0 ground state sectors for the transfer
matrix of the superintegrable chiral Potts model.Comment: LaTeX 2E document, using iopart.cls with iopams packages. 28 pages,

Multi-mode storage and retrieval of microwave fields in a spin ensemble
A quantum memory at microwave frequencies, able to store the state of
multiple superconducting qubits for long times, is a key element for quantum
information processing. Electronic and nuclear spins are natural candidates for
the storage medium as their coherence time can be well above one second.
Benefiting from these long coherence times requires to apply the refocusing
techniques used in magnetic resonance, a major challenge in the context of
hybrid quantum circuits. Here we report the first implementation of such a
scheme, using ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond coupled to
a superconducting resonator, in a setup compatible with superconducting qubit
technology. We implement the active reset of the NV spins into their ground
state by optical pumping and their refocusing by Hahn echo sequences. This
enables the storage of multiple microwave pulses at the picoWatt level and
their retrieval after up to s, a three orders of magnitude improvement
compared to previous experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures + Supplementary information (text and 6 figures
